I've enjoyed watching Pillar since he got called back up.  Some high energy defense, some hustle hits, some bonehead plays.  Even with the missed cut-off men, it's nice to see a Jay playing that hard.

I was happy to see Pillar called up, and relieved to hear that he and Gibbons had spoken about the earlier incident that led to his demotion, and patched things up. I think he's got a lot of ability. He looks really good making those diving catches, can run, is a high percentage base stealer, is developing some power, and has a history of hitting well over .300 - a .322 career BA in the minors. Yes, the lack of walks is an issue, and so his OBP isn't going to be outstanding, but not all OBP's are created equal. A .330 OBP made from a BA of .300 and the rest from walks is much better than an OBP of .330 made from a BA of .230 and the rest from walks.

What dangordon said.

If Pillar plays most games for the rest of the season, he'll draw 4-5 walks.  If he doesn't, he might draw one.  How many walks he draws is not the issue.  The league OBP is .317.  If he can reach base at that rate or better, he'll be a fine everyday player.  My diagnosis is a minor case of nerves.

The lack of walks is a big concern to me. For a guy with very limited power (although it has improved in the past few years), he's a bad babip season from being buried forever.

Pillar took a couple of close pitches there.  The nerves seem to be a lot better.
