I say he retires this summer then comes back next year, or maybe the year after that. Then retires again that season.

And doesn't break 740.

He'll break it easily. First he's going to get traded to the Yankees for a centerfielder. He'll play there a couple years, then get sent to the Angels for an outfielder and a starting pitcher. He'll play there for a couple years, then get bundled in a 6-player deal and sent to the White Sox. He'll play like all of 26 games for the Pale Hose, then he'll be sent to Texas. Later that year he'll be sent to Cleveland. I think he'll retire after that instead of becoming a Cardinal.

Between the three knee surgeries he had last year and still playing this year in the NL, between the bone chips still floating in his swollen elbow, as well as not being able to take any helpful supplements of any sort, and a huge amount of hate from fans, attentions from the media, and pressure from all the steroid allegations, he will not be passing 755. Also, a quarter through the season we are, and he is only on pace for 20 homeruns. He is going to be 42 in July and is losing patience with himself too.

I've just got a feeling he'll come to the American league next year and prolong his career. As a DH, I think he could put up some scary numbers if his knee healed over the summer (not a given, certainly) and he didn't have to worry about taking the field every day. I'd guess 780.

He said in an interview that he wants to play in the AL next season and DH.

If anything, he shuts it down for this year, then comes back in the AL next season. But he is coming back, and he is going to try and break the all time record, if anything just to piss off even more people.

I don't think he will break it and he will pack it in saying the record isn't worth all the 'disrespect' anymore. I think the weight of BALCO will remain too heavy for his injured knee.

As he has put his current and future health on the line to get here, I can't see him stopping of his own volition. I think he is no longer an effective option at any position and will become (if he has not already) little more than some sort of freak, complete with his own media circus, travelling from team to team as circumstances allow. I see him playing for 3 or 4 more teams in the AL , poisoning any chemistry they might have had before hand, before no one will touch him and he will be forced to retire. He will retire in a Baltimore jersey blaming everyone but himself for his failure to break the record.

I say he finishes with 740 homers, hitting less than .250 for the rest of his career.

I get the impression from Barry that passing Ruth is more important to him than Aaron. I even have this crazy idea that he doesn't want to pass Aaron. He has said that passing Mays was the real highlight of the career home run chase, and the way he's looked the past couple of weeks trying desperately to catch Ruth... You have to wonder if Barry really feels like it's worth it to continue much longer. He knows that the abuse he's getting now is nothing compared to what it would be if he was a home run or two away from 755, so why bother? Yeah, part of what motivates him is his intentionally antagonistic relationship with... uh, I guess everybody... but is it enough?

My gut says he'll pass Ruth in the next week or so, and when he does, he'll announce that this will be his last season.

Baseball will sigh in collective relief, and the media dogs barking at Bonds' heels will back off.
