Baseball's Been Barry-Berry Good to Me

As Mike Green works through another Hall Watch preview -- this one tabbing Barry Bonds as a guy who, like it or not, "will (appropriately) walk into the Hall of Fame on the first ballot" -- it's time for another Hall of Names sidebar.

But what to do with Barry?

We've already put together a Financial Times (Stocker, Bonds, Cash, Money) Hall of Names team, as well as All-Father/Son squad(s); we even gave the "B.B. Guns" good play when we were examining various All-Initial teams.

And before anyone else thinks of it, no, we're not going to devote a Hall of Names roster to "All-Rulebreakers" or somesuch other nonsense. Sure, if you include Bonds with guys like Pete Rose, Joe Jackson and Gaylord Perry, you end up with a heck of a lot of talent. But it's not really true to the spirit of "Hall of Names" per se, and I don't want a thread to veer into some wild-eyed discussion about how or if Perry's spitter and Sosa's cork compares to Barry's clear and cream or Charlie Hustle's betting slips.

So, let's go with the old tried and true ... an all-Barry team. This might be hard, since only 24 men named Barry have ever even appeared in a MLB game and seven of those had the last, or family name "Barry." But we need all we can get to fill ou this roster. Fortunately, we have All-Star Barrys as a R/L combination on the mound, at shorstop, and of course, as our cleanup hitter/left fielder. There have also been 10 players named "Berry," but we'll only use them to fill out the squad if necessary. Let's see where this goes. The options aren't really deep enough to go with a DH, so we'll play by NL rules.
