As an addendum to today's Ode to Kevin Cash, it's time to pay up on another installment of Baseball's Hall of Names. This time, let's determine the best team Money ... er, Cash ... er, a plugged Nickle ... well, you get the idea ... can buy.

The lineup is solid; the bench is pretty good; the bullpen is shaky; but that one-man rotation could use some help, creative Boxers. And if you can come up with someone to bump the "stretch" additions (see CF and backup C for examples) ... so much the better.

LINEUP
1. Bobby Bonds, DH
2. Don Money, 3B
3. Barry Bonds, LF
4. Ernie Banks, SS
5. Norm Cash, 1B
6. Jay Payton, CF
7. Dave Cash, 2B
8. Kevin Cash, C
9. Walt Bond, RF

BENCH
IF Milt Stock
IF Kevin Stocker
OF Brian Banks
C IRA Thomas

PITCHING STAFF
SP Brad Penny
SP Felipe Lira
RP Willie Banks
RP Wes Stock
RP Doug Nickle

Apologies to Greg "Bull" Luzinski, Leon "Bull" Durham and Orlando "Baby Bull" Cepeda ... though their presence would've bolstered the middle of the lineup, the decision to exclude them from this market was, well, a Bear. And sorry, Bill [fill in the last name of thousands of ballplayers here], even if we cheated with "IRA," the use of "Bill" is just too easy.

Fire away, Boxers -- we all have interest in compounding this deposit of knowledge.

What about Shawn Green? :)

I knew Da Box's resident economist would be first to chime in ...

I just added Felipe Lira, incidentally, who I meant to include originally ... so don't limit your thinking to North American units.

For starters, Buck Showalter manages this team.

Curt Schilling, of course.

You have to include HOF Buck Leonard.

And also the entire lineup of The 1876 New York Mutuals.

(Too bad former 49ers president Carmen Policy wasn't a baseball exec.)

Silver King, Goldie Rapp, (Manager/bench coach) Silver Flint, (sabrmetrician) Nate Silver (of PECOTA fame).

For bullpen depth: Brian Looney. COMN for b-r page.

The immortal Toots Coyne!
Craig B - Wednesday, April 14 2004 @ 11:49 AM EDT (#32501) #
The big advantage of Coyne is that he Bats Unknown, making it really hard on the pitcher top know what to throw him.

Would South African "Rand"all Simon be too much of a stretch?
_Mick - Wednesday, April 14 2004 @ 12:07 PM EDT (#32503) #
Craig, if you're going to suggest the roster of the Mutuals, I suppose we'd have to allow the entire franchise history of the Arizona Diamondbacks into consideration.

I've got ninety thousand pounds in my pyjamas.
I've got forty thousand French francs in my fridge.
I've got lots of lovely lire.
Now the Deutschmark's getting dearer,
And my dollar bills would buy the Brooklyn Bridge.

There is nothing quite as wonderful as money.
There is nothing quite as beautiful as cash.
Some people say it's folly,
But I'd rather have the lolly.
With money you can make a splash.

There is nothing quite as wonderful as money.
There is nothing like a newly minted pound.
Everyone must hanker for the butchness of a banker.
It's accountancy that makes the world go 'round, 'round, 'round, 'round.

You can keep your Marxist ways,
For it's only just a phase,
For it's money, money, money makes the world go 'round.
Money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, moneeeeey!

Python rules!

Oh, yeah ... Woody Rich.
Gitz - Wednesday, April 14 2004 @ 12:36 PM EDT (#32505) #
Well, we could use many players with first names of "Rich," but I think Rich Butler works. It's more than an oxymoron: it's kind of an anti-Marxist name, or maybe a bizarro-world Marxist name. Work with me, kids, I'm lousy at this.
Coach - Wednesday, April 14 2004 @ 12:45 PM EDT (#32506) #
It's almost as easy as Bill, but "Deutsche" Mark Buehrle and Mark Fidrych came to mind.
_Mick - Wednesday, April 14 2004 @ 12:48 PM EDT (#32507) #
Thanks to Jordan for coming up with the entire team's "Striding to the Plate" music. The "folly" link is great.

I waffled on this one originally, but given some of the other nominations, I think our rotation would be boosted by former 14-game winner (and nominal president of the pitching staff) Scott Bankhead.

Hi there everybody.

Is this limited to first names? ... because if not I can trump all pre-mentioned teams by using a little German heritage. How about a team of Marks coming to the plate or mound?

Maybe we can expand this to an International affair?

My Deutch Marks can face off against the NY DOWS and the British Imperials, the Zurich Precious Metals and for fun, the Oshawa INSUF FUNDS.

Here's my team of Marks; A strong pitching staff but not much in the way of a lineup.

Mark Ellis 2B
Mark Teixeira 3B
Mark Grace 1B
Mark McGwire DH
Mark Kotsay CF
Mark Quinn LF
Mark Whiten RF
Mark Parent C
Mark Belanger SS

Bench - Mark McLemore IF/OF
Bench - Mark Lemke 2B/SS
Bench - Mark Dalesandro C/3B
Bench - Mark Koenig (For the Germanic influence) SS/2B/3B
Bench - Mark Carreon OF

SP - Mark Langston (LH)
SP - Mark Prior (RH)
SP - Mark Mulder (LH)
SP - Mark Fidrych (RH)
SP = Mark Gubicza (RH)

CL = Mark Davis (LH)
RP - Mark Wohlers (RH)
RP - Mark Eichhorn (RH)
RP - Mark Portugal (RH)
RP - Mark Guthrie (LF)
RP - Mark Buerhle (LH)

I would suggest that Barry Bonds be tested by Richard Pound to ensure he isn't counterfeiting.

The only reason I didn't mention it before is because I was sure someone already had. What about Jayson Werth?

Got a pitcher: Kid Nichols. COMN
He can hit too -- .294/.358/.382 in 186 PA's for the 1894 Boston Beaneaters.
Gitz - Wednesday, April 14 2004 @ 05:26 PM EDT (#32514) #
I suppose we could toss Reid Nichols on the team to serve as utility player/scrappy hustler.
_Cristian - Wednesday, April 14 2004 @ 05:46 PM EDT (#32515) #
Doesn't Alex Rodriguez have 250 million reasons to be on this team?

I suppose I'm missing the point though.
_NDG - Wednesday, April 14 2004 @ 06:09 PM EDT (#32516) #
I knew Da Box's resident economist would be first to chime in ...

Imagine what the response will be to the all-affidavit team!
_Mick - Wednesday, April 14 2004 @ 06:30 PM EDT (#32517) #
Good point, NDG. We could start with Vern, Vance and Rudy Law, as well as Tom Lawless, Joe Judge, Clint Courtney, Bunny Brief, Gus "Pro" Bono ...

Aww, now see what y've gone done?

Let's take up a new All-Legal Team later this week. Nominations welcome. Shout'm out.
