ALOMAR DIVISION
Congratulations to Toronto Walrus, winners of the Alomar Division regular season for the second consecutive season. Thunderbirds flew into second place via an Alomar-best record of 90-35-7 during the second half, while the Austin Senators settled for third after leading for the first two-thirds of the season. The Walrus and T-Birds earn a first-round bye. The other four teams fight for their lives.
The Walrus and fifth-place Gashouse Gorillas are the only teams to play for the crown in every season of the league’s existence. Joining the fray are the Horse Field Hammers and new-to-Alomar Ghost Man On Third. This week’s matchups, plus statistical favorites based on a combination of overall record, second-half record, and normalized standings:

The other side of the standings had the most entertainment value and gut-wrenching outcomes. The three bottom-ranked teams must move to Barfield in 2006; #20 Baird Brain had already clinched one spot but the other two were wide open with five teams in the mix. Slippery Pete finished heroically by defeating rival Hannibal’s Cannibals 8-4-0 and avoided relegation by a mere one game. The Cannibals, Moscow Rats and Garces Not On Roids finished tied for the final two relegation slots, but the Cannibals technically rank ahead of the Rats and Roids because of their superior record in the last week of the season (a lazily contrived rule on Yahoo’s part, but there it is).

Kudos to The Mighty Midgets and Jay’s Ehs, who have earned automatic promotion to the Alomar Division in 2006. Their finishes were especially impressive in that neither team was in the top three at the halfway point. WAMCO, Team Junior Felix, Schroedinger’s Bat and Burlington Mazsters will vie for the other promotion spot. The Midgets and Ehs face the winners of this week’s matchups:
