Let the playoffs begin!

ALOMAR DIVISION

Congratulations to Toronto Walrus, winners of the Alomar Division regular season for the second consecutive season. Thunderbirds flew into second place via an Alomar-best record of 90-35-7 during the second half, while the Austin Senators settled for third after leading for the first two-thirds of the season. The Walrus and T-Birds earn a first-round bye. The other four teams fight for their lives.

The Walrus and fifth-place Gashouse Gorillas are the only teams to play for the crown in every season of the league’s existence. Joining the fray are the Horse Field Hammers and new-to-Alomar Ghost Man On Third. This week’s matchups, plus statistical favorites based on a combination of overall record, second-half record, and normalized standings:

#3 Austin Senators vs #6 Ghost Man On Third, pick ‘em.
#4 Horse Field Hammers vs #5 Gashouse Gorillas, Hammers 51% to win.

Playoff Odds:
Thunderbirds (33% chance to win)
Toronto Walrus (27%)
Horse Field Hammers (11%)
Gashouse Gorillas (10%)
Austin Senators (9%)
Ghost Man On Third (9%)

In the Consolation Bracket, Reykjavik Fish Candy and Mebion Glyndwyr will relax this week and observe the following contests:

#9 Eastern Shore Birds vs #12 Homer Jays Simpsons, Birds 53% to win.
#10 Red Mosquitos vs #11 Chatsworth Halos, Halos 61% to win.

The other side of the standings had the most entertainment value and gut-wrenching outcomes. The three bottom-ranked teams must move to Barfield in 2006; #20 Baird Brain had already clinched one spot but the other two were wide open with five teams in the mix. Slippery Pete finished heroically by defeating rival Hannibal’s Cannibals 8-4-0 and avoided relegation by a mere one game. The Cannibals, Moscow Rats and Garces Not On Roids finished tied for the final two relegation slots, but the Cannibals technically rank ahead of the Rats and Roids because of their superior record in the last week of the season (a lazily contrived rule on Yahoo’s part, but there it is).

Burlington Mazsters (10% / 10%)

In the Consolation Bracket, Pistol Nine and European (fka Canadian) Wannabe will enjoy pina coladas by the pool as they watch their brethren compete:

#9 Middleclass Elitists vs #12 Jick’s Rays, pick ‘em.
#10 Monkeymen Cubed vs #11 Lubumbashi Posse, Monkey 51% to win.

Freddy Beach Fracas, the Anarchist Archivists and Capers will join the Carter Division next season.

I think I may have set the record for biggest 2nd half fall - from first at the break to seventh!

My team's problem was elbow and shoulder injuries - and that's just the hitters (Bagwell, Rolen, Durazo)!

Sigh. Next season I should change my team name from Eastern Shore Birds to the Middling Middlemosts. Not an inspiring 3-year record, but I suppose it beats relegation.

I finished first (and received byes) in 2 other Yahoo head-to-head leagues and I'm in first by about 20 points in my Yahoo rotisserie league. In the Alomar division of the BBFL ... 9th. Y'all are way too good at this game.

I just barely managed to get by capers last week and held him off for the true glory of finishing 4th last. I'd like to thank Bartolo Colon and Julio Lugo. Without them I would have been relegated for sure.

congratulations to the division winners and to those promoted for next season, and of course a big thanks to Lucas for a terrific job as Commish.

Props to Coach again.

It is now time for the me to go to sit in the corner and think about what I did wrong.

Well that was an enjoyable regular season. After spending the first 2 weeks of the season in first, I fell to as low as 16th spot in weeks 6 and 7. Shortly thereafter I received an e-mail from somebody (sorry...can't remember who) stating that their team should be battling mine in the final. I always had faith that I had drafted well but at that point in time was starting to worry that it might be just an off year for my entire squad. I then spent the next 15 weeks somehow battling back into the promotion spot. Oddly enough the Eh's turnaround pretty much coincided with Koskie going on the DL.

If the owner of Garces Not on Roids (I think they finished 19th in Alomar) is reading this, I would be interested in taking a sneak peak at your roster to see who I might have available in the offseason.

Thanks everybody.

Last month, I concluded that Three Bucks on a Hun weren't going to make the playoffs in Carter, so I dumped Ichiro and Konerko for Oswalt. So of course I end up making the playoffs.

The Cinderella story ends here though. Sheets is gone for the season and Oswalt looks completely gassed.

I think a paragraph might be missing from the Carter write up of the 3-way battle for 5th, 6th, and 7th that had me squeek into 6th over the Angry Gnomes due to the yahoo h2h tiebreaking rules. I'm basing this not just because I wanted to remention the race but the sentence:

"In the Consolation Bracket, the aforementioned Gnomes and Team Balla will relax this week and play the winners of these contests"

is the first mention of Gnomes in the article that I could see.

Uhhh Pistol, are you forgetting someone? The Posse went from 3rd at the halfway point (and as late as week 16) to tenth. The most amazing (in a make me cry kind of way) thing is that my team wasn't horrible down the stretch, my opponents just went Barry Bonds on me. Note that after week 14 my opponents roto score was 87. After week 20 it was 153. No that's not a typo. My last opponent also went crazy so it would be interesting to see what my final opponent roto score was .... Lucas can you oblige?

Misplaced modifiers. That's why the Gnomes are so angry.

I think I wrote the Carter bit first (including an explanation of the tie rule and why the Gnomes finished 7th) then wrote the Alomar writeup next. Since the Alomar writeup also referred to the Yahoo rule and comes first in the text, I subsequently deleted the original mention of the Gnomes but forgot to delete the "aforementioned."

Anyway, yes, the Gnomes also fell victim to the bizarre Yahoo rules. I think it's something we can easily correct next year as far as it affects relegation, but I doubt we can change anything affecting the playoffs because Yahoo sets the weekly matchups and the Commish can't change them.

Lucas - Wednesday, September 07 2005 @ 12:59 AM EDT (#127520) #

When I say "next year," I mean beginning next year.

As unfair as it may be that an Alomar team was relegated based on its performance in one particular week, it would be even more unfair to implement a "solution" before voting on an amendment to the BBFL constitution.

superdevin - Wednesday, September 07 2005 @ 11:04 AM EDT (#127538) #
just out of curiousity why does WAMCO get the nod from barfield to alomar if either of top 2 teams win the playoffs as opposed to team junior felix considering that we tied in the regular season? basically, what is the tie breaker system?
superdevin - Wednesday, September 07 2005 @ 11:06 AM EDT (#127539) #
nevermind i just found the answer to that last question in the alomar write. that really stings.
