Fabio Castro had a fantastic outing, and there were great individual offensive performances on each team (edit: except Dunedin. Yuck.), despite some lousy team performances.
Las Vegas 4 at Tacoma 0
Fabio Castro was the story of the game. He tossed 7 masterful innings, allowing 5 base-runners (2 hits, 2 walks, 1 HBP) and striking out 10, while allowing no runs. Travis Snider was the other story of the game, as he went 3-4 with a homer and 3 of Las Vegas' 3 RBIs. Snider was also picked off and caught stealing, but hey, at least he's trying. It's not like we're counting on him to be our lead-off hitter of the future.
Buck Coats also homered, while Howie Clark, Randy Ruiz and Brian Dopirak had 2 hits apiece.
New Britain at New Hampshire - postponed
Dunedin 1 at Jupiter 4
The D-Jays were stifled in this one, as they only managed 3 hits and no walks. It wasn't exactly a dominating performance by the Jupiter pitching staff - Dunedin struck out only twice. Opposing starter Brett Harker (that name really "harkens" back to a former Las Vegas 51!) must have bought his defense dinner after the game. Vincent Bongiovanni couldn't match his Hammerhead opponent, only lasting 4 1/3 while allowing 2 runs on 7 base-runners.
Adam Loewen had a double and scored a run in 3 trips, and he was by far the best in a truly offensive performance.
Lansing 10 at Beloit 1
That's better. After being shut out for the first 4 innings, Lansing put up a cool line over the next 5: 4-3-2-1-0. Kaboom. Henderson Alvarez got the start and was very good, going 5 innings and allowing a run on 3 hits and a walk. He struck out 3 and got 9 ground ball outs.
On the offensive side of things, the 5-6-7 (Robert Sobolewski, Jon Talley, and Justin McClanahan) all went deep, and A.J. Jimenez had a single and 2 doubles.
State College 8 at Auburn 5
Auburn led this one 4-3 at one point, but Brian Justice had an awful time out of the bullpen to hand State College the victory. Scott Gracey got the start and was okay, but nothing to write home about. Or write in this space. 2009 draftee Yan Gomes had a great game, falling a triple short of the cycle. Ryan Goins was 2-5 with 3 Ks.
GCL Blue Jays 3 at GCL Pirates 4
The G-Jays took the lead early, but couldn't hold it. Starter Sam Strickland gave up 3 runs in just over 3 innings, and though the bullpen kept it close, it wasn't quite close enough. Left fielder John Roberts had a huge game, going 4-4 with a homer, but he's old for the league (23), so don't get excited. Carlos Perez had a single, walk and strike-out in 4 trips, while Gustavo Pierre took an 0-fer.
