Fabio Castro had a fantastic outing, and there were great individual offensive performances on each team (edit: except Dunedin. Yuck.), despite some lousy team performances.

Las Vegas 4 at Tacoma 0

Fabio Castro was the story of the game. He tossed 7 masterful innings, allowing 5 base-runners (2 hits, 2 walks, 1 HBP) and striking out 10, while allowing no runs. Travis Snider was the other story of the game, as he went 3-4 with a homer and 3 of Las Vegas' 3 RBIs. Snider was also picked off and caught stealing, but hey, at least he's trying. It's not like we're counting on him to be our lead-off hitter of the future.

Buck Coats also homered, while Howie Clark, Randy Ruiz and Brian Dopirak had 2 hits apiece.

New Britain at New Hampshire - postponed

Dunedin 1 at Jupiter 4

The D-Jays were stifled in this one, as they only managed 3 hits and no walks. It wasn't exactly a dominating performance by the Jupiter pitching staff - Dunedin struck out only twice. Opposing starter Brett Harker (that name really "harkens" back to a former Las Vegas 51!) must have bought his defense dinner after the game. Vincent Bongiovanni couldn't match his Hammerhead opponent, only lasting 4 1/3 while allowing 2 runs on 7 base-runners.

Adam Loewen had a double and scored a run in 3 trips, and he was by far the best in a truly offensive performance.

Lansing 10 at Beloit 1

That's better. After being shut out for the first 4 innings, Lansing put up a cool line over the next 5: 4-3-2-1-0. Kaboom. Henderson Alvarez got the start and was very good, going 5 innings and allowing a run on 3 hits and a walk. He struck out 3 and got 9 ground ball outs.

On the offensive side of things, the 5-6-7 (Robert Sobolewski, Jon Talley, and Justin McClanahan) all went deep, and A.J. Jimenez had a single and 2 doubles.

State College 8 at Auburn 5

Auburn led this one 4-3 at one point, but Brian Justice had an awful time out of the bullpen to hand State College the victory. Scott Gracey got the start and was okay, but nothing to write home about. Or write in this space. 2009 draftee Yan Gomes had a great game, falling a triple short of the cycle. Ryan Goins was 2-5 with 3 Ks.

GCL Blue Jays 3 at GCL Pirates 4

The G-Jays took the lead early, but couldn't hold it. Starter Sam Strickland gave up 3 runs in just over 3 innings, and though the bullpen kept it close, it wasn't quite close enough. Left fielder John Roberts had a huge game, going 4-4 with a homer, but he's old for the league (23), so don't get excited. Carlos Perez had a single, walk and strike-out in 4 trips, while Gustavo Pierre took an 0-fer.

Three Stars!
3. Yan Gomes - 3-4, 2B, HR
2. John Roberts - 4-4, HR
1. Fabio Castro - 7IP, 5 base-runners, 10 Ks

According to Justin Jackon's facebook he is having labrum surgery.

For real?

then that sound I heard must have been Tyler Pastornicky becoming our top SS prospect (for now at least)

By the way, the 2009 draftees are hitting the cover off the ball at auburn so far.

TamRa - Tuesday, July 28 2009 @ 01:53 AM EDT (#203357) #
By that I mean Goins and Ochinko.

Speaking of the SS position...i wouldn't mind seeing Pastornicky spend a good part of August in Dunedin if that's true about Jackson.

We'll have to keep an eye out for word on how serious the surgery is and what the recovery time looks like.

I'd like to think this has been affecting him all year so as to account for the awful time he's had.

Luis Sanchez got demoted from NH to Dunedin to fill the SS hole it seems for Monday's game.

Ochinko had sick stats in college this year, but hes only in short season A now, so I won't take his stats too seriously until hes in a higher level. He could possibly be the next slugging OF in the system after Lind, Snider. Personally I don't know too much about Goins.

How long before Castro gets a chance out of the bullpen for the big club?  I wouldn't mind him in there as a replacement for Hayhurst.  It's pretty clear that Cito has no confidence in Hayhurst (he hasn't pitched for almost three weeks) so why not replace him with someone else?

Also, I'd be really excited to watch the Jays again if Dopirak was brought up to play LF for the last bit of the season.

There's one thing, if nothing else, that Cito and Gibby have in common - ride he pets into the ground and ignore the guys on the end of the bench. I don't think Cito lacks confidence in Hayhurst - it was Cito who pretty much promised him he'd be up here - he just pretty much obsesses about his go-to guys.

I don't think Hayhurst is great shakes (I don't think Castro is either) but I think there are a lot worse RHP getting major league relief innings. It's a shame he doesn't get enough work to prove himself.

What I'd actually like to see is Tallet dealt while his value is high and Castro called up in THAT role (LHRP who can spot start if need be).

I doubt the pitching staff would share your excitement - Dopirak's played 9 games in the outfield over the past 10 years.

Hey Tercet....  Louis Sanchez:  .268 OBP and .191 Ave. and 21 errors at New Hampshire.  Call me crazy, but his numbers probably had something to do with his demotion to Dunedin rather than just what may be happening to Jackson.

Ochinko is a catcher and has rotated between 1st and DH as well.  I don't think he's played the OF.  His very low K rate gives some reason for optimism.

Ochinko seems more like the second-coming of Curtis Thigpen; I wouldn't get too jazzed about him.

Couple of tidbits on the FisherCats from their beat writer Kevin Gray

  • Power outage at the stadium last night.  DH tonight
  • Rey Gonzalez on the DL again with a groin injury, likely for the rest of the season
  • Troy Cate from the independent Long Island Ducks signed to replace Rey.

Jays site says Marcum left the game because of a back issue - spasms they hope - getting treatment with the major league trainers and will go back to Vegas.

Richmond will probably be activated to start this weekend.

Noah - Tuesday, July 28 2009 @ 02:47 PM EDT (#203390) #

I'm heading to Vegas this week and am hoping to catch a game this weekend.  Maybe I'll get lucky and see Marcum pitch although with this injury it looks unlikely.

I'll try to post some observations when I get back.

This must be code for TJ surgery on his other elbow as well :)

Ryan Schimpf made his debut in the GCL today, going 1-1 with a walk and playing second base.  I don't know what the development people are doing, putting another advanced collegiate hitter there to begin his pro career. Besides, shouldn't he getting work with the shortstop draftee for this year, Ryan Goins, in Auburn?  Goins to Schimpf to Ochinko on the 6-4-3 has a nice ring to it. :)

"Ochinko seems more like the second-coming of Curtis Thigpen; I wouldn't get too jazzed about him."

What makes you say that? Thigpen was a pure slap hitter whereas the little I've read on Ochinko has stated that he has legitimate power.
Spifficus - Tuesday, July 28 2009 @ 10:22 PM EDT (#203421) #
It almost looks like they're using the GCL as a quicky 'spring training' for some of the draftees like Schimph Goins and Gomez.
Sano - Tuesday, July 28 2009 @ 11:38 PM EDT (#203433) #
Should we be worried that the top draft picks have still not been signed?  It's very unlike JP to not have these guys signed and playing already at Auburn/GCL.
brent - Tuesday, July 28 2009 @ 11:56 PM EDT (#203436) #
The players drafted at the top haven't signed, so the market isn't set yet. It will probably come down to the wire for a lot of teams and players. It is a great opportunity for some low draft picks to put themselves on the radar if they signed quickly.
Marc Hulet - Wednesday, July 29 2009 @ 07:32 AM EDT (#203447) #
MLB won't let teams announce significant over-draft deals until the signing deadline in August... That's why so many teams have so many unsigned players. It's stupid really and is affecting players' careers because they get less time on the field.
christaylor - Wednesday, July 29 2009 @ 11:12 AM EDT (#203454) #
Does anyone have any information on Bullington? He was pitching well prior to being placed on the DL at the beginning of July and the only article that pops up on a brief search doesn't disclose the injury due to "player privacy".
