A stirring, dramatic 1-0 win for Australia versus Japan in the other semifinal (I watched much of the first seven innings on TV before leaving for work; Chris Oxspring was marvelous) sets up Canada's semifinal against Cuba, who beat Canada 5-2 in round-robin play (after losing to Canada 9-1 in the pre-Olympic warmup tournament in Italy two weeks ago).

Shawn Hill will get the start for Canada. Canada will have to beat tough Cuban lefty Adiel Palma. In the Olympic qualifying tournament last year, Palma ran through Canada's lefty-dominated lineup like a hot knife through butter. He pitched seven innings of three-hit ball in pool play, then eight innings of a two-hit shutout in the final. Canada has been in tough against lefties so far; they have a very tough road ahead of them. Palma's your typical veteran lefty -- everything he throws has lots of movement. His out pitch is a curve and he also throws a tailing fastball and a diving forkball, and his prototypically Cuban mechanics allow him to come from unexpected and ever-changing arm angles.

I have to say, I'm a bit worried...
I was hoping that if we lost to Cuba, we'd have a good chance to medal against Austrailia... Now it seems more important than EVER to get through the Semi's and into the finals!

Is it possible to get any sort of gameday type thing for the Olympic baseball? Does the CBC site have anything like that?
_DGriebeling - Tuesday, August 24 2004 @ 10:22 AM EDT (#21378) #
When does this game start? I checked out the CBC Olympic webpage, and all they said was "Tuesday Night in Athens", as far as I could tell.

Thanks

The game is on TSN (as all the baseball games have been) at 12:30 Eastern.
_A - Tuesday, August 24 2004 @ 10:30 AM EDT (#21381) #
It's probably because the game is on TSN. As a person who has never had a cable TV hook up and subsequently witnessed the total demise of athletics on public television, that Olympic baseball is given to a cable network bugs me to no end.

Is that still considered BBRadio if the accounts of the game are coming from television? ;)

But it can't be called BBTV...wasn't that the name for our 24 hour BB channel?

Yeah but at least the CBC decided to use our tax dollars to outbid TSN for curling. Oh wait. :(

For those of us who don't live in Toronto, often the CBC is a cable network.

Yeah, yeah, center of the universe, I know.

I get UPN really clear though...

Heh. I live in the middle of one of Canada's largest cities, and I can't get CBC television over the air. You can with a big rooftop antenna,. but otherwise you're SOL.

(I'd also complain about there being no local CBC Radio when every other city of comparable size, or even much smaller, has one. But why bother...)

Heh. I live in the middle of one of Canada's largest cities, and I can't get CBC television over the air.

That's because not energy nor matter can pass through what your city considers to be "air".

The best way I've found to follow the game on the internet is through the official website where the "play-by-play" is updated at the end of each inning.

For more frequent updates, we can only rely on the kind people here at the Box who are watching on TV.
Craig B - Tuesday, August 24 2004 @ 12:33 PM EDT (#21396) #
Looks like Andy Stewart is the DH, as Ernie Whitt had threatened. Something of a surprise, but at least it's another righty bat to confront Palma with.

By the way, the official site, and the NBC site, both have play-by-play updated after each inning, but not very quickly. BBRadio should be quicker...

_James W - Tuesday, August 24 2004 @ 12:36 PM EDT (#21399) #
I'll leave the play-by-play to other, to avoid clutter, but I'd like to add that those red pants-blue socks combo the Cubans are wearing are atrocious.
_Rob - Tuesday, August 24 2004 @ 12:36 PM EDT (#21400) #
Is Australia beating Japan in Athens akin to Belarus beating Sweden in Salt Lake? As in, both teams will be cannon fodder for the Canadians?

One can only wish.

Everyone who thought Japan would not be in the gold medal game, raise your hands. Anyone?
_James W - Tuesday, August 24 2004 @ 12:38 PM EDT (#21401) #
I'm not sure Japan would be cannon fodder. I'm legitimately worried that if the Canadians are forced into the bronze medal game, they'll be leaving without a medal.
robertdudek - Tuesday, August 24 2004 @ 12:39 PM EDT (#21402) #
With a 3-1 count Palma catches Clapp leaving for second early and a CS 1-3-6 results. 2 out. Klassen walks on the next pitch.

You can [get CBC in Hamilton] with a big rooftop antenna,. but otherwise you're SOL.

I get it in Burlington with rabbit ears. There's usually a vertical line running down Brian Williams' body, but the picture and sound are there.

I'm not sure Japan would be cannon fodder.

"Both teams will be cannon fodder" meant Australia, who Canada destroyed the other day, and Belarus, who Canada beat 7-2 in hockey back in 2002. I don't think Japan will be easy to beat.

That's bad news for the Canadians. If they don't win today, they'll face a mad Japanese team for the bronze.

Walk and a single for Canada in the top of the 1st, but nothing happens.

Cuba's pitcher looks terrible in the red pants and high blue socks. I'm normally a proponent of high socks, but in this case, it's not a good idea.

Pestano up. He gets ahead 3-0 and then grounds to short. It takes a high hop on Klassen but he fiedls it in the hole and his throw is scooped nicely by Betts for the final out. Cuba 2 Canada 0.

Andy Stewart, the DH, leads off. After a tough battle he fans on a good fastball. The splitter must have been evident in his mind as Palma used it to get ahead of Stewart.

Radmanovich strikes out on a 2-2 splitter. Palma is getting it in gear. Betts gets ahead 3-0, but two fastball strikes fill the count and Betts goes down on a splitter down and away. Three outs.

Bottom of 4th. Cepeda, Pestano, Sanchez due up. Cepeda hits a 2-2 mistake hard right at Orr for the 5-3 putout. Hill got away with a hanging sinker there. Pestano falls behind 0-2 on curves and dribbles one that Hill fields and takes to the bag himself. 2 out. Sanchez strikes out on a 1-2 pitch down out of the zone. Both starters are now sharp. End of 4: Cuba 2-1.

That first base cam they use to show pickoff attempts is great.

(I'm doing the "This game is so good, I forgot to throw my clothes in the washing machine" shuffle . . . I could wind up doing the "Stubb(y)ed Toe" dance)

Stolen base (well, defensive indifference, I guess), and then a ground out to third ends the inning. Still, Canada's winning!
robertdudek - Tuesday, August 24 2004 @ 02:16 PM EDT (#21488) #
Danny Betancourt (righthander) is in. Stewart went to third on the throw home, so it's first and third. Ware is fooled on a slider - he falls behind 0-2. The Cubans pithch out but nothing is going on. After a slider is fouled off, the next pitch is in the dirt with Stern going and he steals second uncontested. Ware grounds down the 3B line and is retired 5-3. Three out: Canada 3-2.

Scull leads off with a bouncer to the SS hole. Klassen does a Vizquel-like jump stop and comes up throwing. The tough one-hopper is handled by Betts for the out. Tabares walks on 4 pitches. Paret battles and hits a high fly to left but the wind knocks it down for a routine out. Enriquez up and Tabares decides to go for the steal but he is thrown out by miles. End of 5th: Canada 3, Cuba 2.

How long can Hill go for (considering how many pitches he's already thrown) and who will be Canada's primary arms out of the pen? Is Cyr the main lefty? What about from the right side? Chris Mears?
robertdudek - Tuesday, August 24 2004 @ 02:33 PM EDT (#21501) #
Radmanovich taps an 0-1 pitch in front of the plate. Ground out 1-3. Betts looks at 2 strikes and then chops one to the pitcher. Ground out 1-3. Orr fouls a 2-2 offhis fit and then strikes out to end the inning. Betancourt looks great so far - he's got a good change, spots the fastball well and mixes in an effective slider.

As a child, I openly rooted for the Buck Martinez/Garth Iorg half of the famous mid-80s platoons, going so far as to dress as Garth Iorg one year for Hallowe'en. If Whitt takes over the managerial reins, I can only guess that Rance Mulliniks will be the next first base coach and the Jays will dance on the ruins of my childhood memories.

Ah, only kidding. I loved Ernie and Rance, too.

I would imagine everyone except Phil Devey will be available if needed. Cyr, Begg, and Mears have gotten the lion's share of the setup duties; Mears and Begg have been very effective. John Ogiltree will be a situational righty.

Aaron Myette will close, and they might give him two innings...

Throws to first and it looks like Stewart beat it but is called out. Whitt comes out to argue. Stern walks on 4 pitches. Ware is up while Betancourt throws over to first repeatedly. And eventually they catch Stern going the wrong way. That's the second baserunning error of the game for Canada.

What did he say?

I think his initial reaction was something like, "So that's the way it works around here?!". The other announcer (Rauter? sp?) didn't seem to be buying a conspiracy, and said something like, "well, it was just a bad call". A little later Sawkiw said something like, "if you talk to the coaches, they've been in the trenches, they know what goes on" (that's a rough paraphrase), sort of alleging at least a history of the Cubans getting their way. Then Stern got on and they left it alone.

In any case, at least the home plate umpire doesn't seem to be unduly victimizing the Canadians, or at least from what I've seen (I'm half watching, half working).

I read somewhere lately that street hockey should be a summer Olympic sport. We'd clean up, in:
5 vs 5
3 vs 3
3 vs 3, no goalies
for men, women AND mixed. Not to mention with skates or shoes. I count 18 gold medals right there.

They could scour the country looking for the best neighbourhood team, and that team goes and plays as Canada.

Why street hockey? Well, why synchronized diving?

I read this article in the star today re: felicien, kind of fitting..

Felicien usually knows how she's going to fare in the opening seconds.

"If I have a great start and a great first hurdle, the rest of the race is almost a formality," she said. "If I have a bad first hurdle, I have a lot of work to do.

"And I have this mentality now where I'm not going to back off my speed, I'm not going to back off my technique, I'm not going to go gingerly over these hurdles.

"If I'm going to crash and burn, then I'm going to crash and burn. That's just the risk. But you better believe I'm going to run and I'm going to run hard."

so they stole us Francis and Morneau! As simple as that !!

At least with Morneau, you could understand the Twins calling him up. He was just mashing the ball in Rochester and he's way better than Mientkiewicz with the bat.

With Francis, as many people have pointed out, O'Dowd could've waited a week. It's too bad Shawn Hill's effort goes for naught. I hate to say it but did anyone else think of Alex Gonzalez with the Cubs in the NLCS last year when Pete Orr failed to start what could've been a potential double play. I wonder if Steve Bartman was in attendance.......

It appears Felicien did Wotherspoon and Read one better, eliminating herself and an opponent in the process:

Starting in Lane 5, the 23-year-old world indoor and outdoor champion hit the first hurdle with her right leg and fell into the next lane, taking out Russian Irina Shevchenko as she fell.

Seriously, why don't they just disqualify Felicien and restart the race when that happens? Can you imagine how many grievances this country would file if the Russian took out Felicien?

Hey...wouldn't it be even better if the Canadians beat Japan tomorrow morning?

Who will be sleeping at 6 am tomorrow morning?

And what was the deal with the rowing greivance? Was that the same race when Canada finished 2nd, far behind whoever won (GBR?), and were clearly overmatched?
Thomas - Tuesday, August 24 2004 @ 04:14 PM EDT (#21842) #
Although I remember reading that the South African rowers wrote a letter stating that the Canadian boat never interfered with their boat, I agree that grievance was ill-founded.

I think Shewfelt's on the vault is pretty legitimate, too. When Dragulescu's score should have been technically impossible given his landing, and when one judge gives a ridiculous high score like that, it's clear that those results aren't the ones that should really stand.
_James W - Tuesday, August 24 2004 @ 04:14 PM EDT (#21843) #

And what was the deal with the rowing greivance? Was that the same race when Canada finished 2nd, far behind whoever won (GBR?), and were clearly overmatched?

No, I was thinking of the race where the pairs rowed out of their lane, interfered with the South Africans, were promptly and appropriately disqualified, and tried to have themselves placed in
the final on 'compassionate grounds'.
_Rob - Tuesday, August 24 2004 @ 04:17 PM EDT (#21845) #
Oh, that race. Is that the one where they tried to add a 9th team to the 8-team final (or however many teams race at once)? I don't follow rowing too closely.

What do you pay off the wind with?

I've had a stupendously frustrating afternoon here ($8000 printer needs a service call, two CD burners in two different computers fail when I have 6 gigs worth of stuff that needs to be burned ASAP, light switch busted, customer has decided his $700 worth of custom cut mats, well, he ordered too many and he doesn't want them all now), but this thread has kept me going. Although I remember reading that the South African rowers wrote a letter stating that the Canadian boat never interfered with their boat, I agree that grievance was ill-founded.

I think their letter only stated that they had no objections to the Canadians being allowed to race in the finals. I think they were pretty adamant that they were interfered with.

As for Shewfelt, that may or may not have been a crooked result, but I don't know enough about gymnastics to know one way or the other. All I can say is that as bad as that looked, the parallel bars and the high bar judging looked even more rotten last night.
Craig B - Tuesday, August 24 2004 @ 04:22 PM EDT (#21851) #
customer has decided his $700 worth of custom cut mats, well, he ordered too many and he doesn't want them all now

Give me a Sally Robbins or Jason Estrada anyday over someone who actually tries and doesn't win.

Anyone else listening to the FAN? Take idiot callers, replace McCown with Millard and you have even more entertaining radio.

That's right. He just Cleared The Ayers. Boo-yeah.

Silver for Despatie. A huge final dive in the clutch.

Soul Searching? Typical man.... show some pride! My rant had nothing to do with soul searching. It has to do with living with the Canadian Maple Leaf right on my heart. The wins are big and the losses are tough to bare. This has nothing to do with soul searching.

Are the losses really that tough to bear? I agree they're disappointing, but they're hardly tragic. Canadians are as melodramatic in defeat as we accuse Americans of being in victory.
_Moffatt - Tuesday, August 24 2004 @ 04:34 PM EDT (#21868) #
customer has decided his $700 worth of custom cut mats, well, he ordered too many and he doesn't want them all now

Usually when someone says they no longer want something they had earlier agreed to, I usually shoot back with: I want a pony.

It usually gets the point across pretty quickly.
_Rob - Tuesday, August 24 2004 @ 04:35 PM EDT (#21869) #

_bmy - Tuesday, August 24 2004 @ 04:36 PM EDT (#21870) #
We're melodramatic in defeat (while the americans are melodramatic in victory) because, as the saying goes, practice makes perfect.

I'm teaching an MBA course in the afternoon every day this week. Just got back to see that the good guys had lost. :(

I never said anything about our losses being tragic (this is not a Shakespeare play) nor did I say anything regarding American victories.

Perdita's loss stinks. Kyle's vault 4th place stinks. Men's 8 rowing stinks.

Care to analyze my statements again for more than what they are worth?
Craig B - Tuesday, August 24 2004 @ 04:39 PM EDT (#21873) #
Next time (remember the Olympics we all whined that we didn't get the last time? That's now next time) they'll have DRAMA QUEENING in the Olympics and we'll win big!

And Mike, I told you. If you want a pony, you're going to have to keep your room clean and bring home a better report card.

Yeah, but one of these days somebody is actually going to give you a pony. What'll you do then?

I'm teaching an MBA course in the afternoon every day this week

I'm sitting here with a plate of cookies watching TV and surfing the Net.

Ah, the beauty of summer. What's that, you say? School is 14 days away? Not to Rob, it isn't. It's only back-to-school time if you believe it is.

Well, that's what I'd usually be doing. This week I get to dress up and be a big important talking guy, so this whole exercise is worth doing. I suppose teaching really isn't necessary; I could wear a suit while eating a plate of cookies and talk to the cat, but that'd be rather foolish.

Fair enough, I'm not trying to pick a fight with you. I wish we'd done better in some of these events, too. I'm by no means implicating you, but I think that a lot of Canadians feel more sorry for themselves than they do for the athletes when these things happen. I've not contributed anything to the careers of Felicien, Shewfelt or the rowers, so they don't owe me any medals in return.

Now as for Mears and Beggs, that's another story altogether!
_Tassle - Tuesday, August 24 2004 @ 04:44 PM EDT (#21883) #
Perdita was wearing number 1313? Whoa.

No way that was a coincidence. I bet she was laughing at the fates, daring them to ruin her run, knowing full well in her heart that nothing was going to keep her from the sweet nectar of Athenian glory she had so richly earned....

Haha, Perdita. Haha

Ouch. That's like being given Lane 0 at the Haunted Stadium... "sure, it runs under that ladder there, but you'll be OK. Don't step on any of those shards of glass, by the way... that mirror just broke."

Lo, Perdita, thou doth fallest in the

Am I way out in left field, or does Perdita Felicien translate very loosely to "Lost Happiness"? If it does, it neatly sums up the day.

Incidentally, I think that this thread has taken the lead in the "most posts" category. Patriotism lives.

_Rob - Tuesday, August 24 2004 @ 04:49 PM EDT (#21890) #
Thanks, Craig, but what is a "joerb"? Is this another word Shakespeare made up? Or is it another one of those darned tpyos?
_Ryan Day - Tuesday, August 24 2004 @ 04:51 PM EDT (#21891) #
Rob is clearly speaking of one who hurdled not too wisely, nor too well.
Of one not easily tripped but, being wrought, and psyched in the extreme;
Of one whose whose foot, like the stooges 3,
Kicked the hurdle away.

(Rob may be more original, but he wasn't quite tragic enough)

Very interesting, Craig. I could only watch a few minutes of it, since it got rather annoying after a while.

But at least I get it now.

**

V-Dub is not in the lineup today, says Wilner on the FAN. Rios bats third. Menechino is the DH, batting 5th. Batista vs. Wakefield.

*Choke* *cough* *splutter*. That's nice. I think you said cut mats, right? Is the customer not completely SOL then? Is "SOL" our word of the day?

Yeah, though it could be that I'm SOL because he's a regular so I didn't make him pay up front for a custom order.

I may have to take some funny-sized pictures some time soon.

I'd like a pony is the kind of response that I've learned does not endear me to my somewhat offbeat clientele.

Bah. 40 minutes and I can leave and go watch baseball.

Ernie has to take some of the heat today. Begg was lousy in the 7th, giving up 3 hits, yet Whitt ran him back out there for the 8th when he proceeded to blow the game (with some help from the usually-steady defence). Why Myette "the Closer" wasn't an option in that situation I am not sure - he was absolutely nasty in his last appearance and has the best stuff on the staff. It's an awfully short tournament, and while Begg had pitched well until today, when you're 12 innings away from a Gold Medal I would think you would use the most experienced, talented players you've got.

Is it any coincidence that this Day from Hell, August 24th, fell on the same day as:
- Steve Guttenberg's birthday
- the day Windows 95 was released

Guttenberg and Microsoft Windows. Come on, who doesn't hate those two?

_Rob - Tuesday, August 24 2004 @ 05:23 PM EDT (#21902) #
Nope, didn't see the movie. Was it as good as his other acting performances, which made Keanu Reeves look like Robert DeNiro?

_Mick - Wednesday, August 25 2004 @ 12:29 AM EDT (#21905) #
Thanks, guys. I have now emptionally harmed myself picturing Keanu Reeves saying "You talkin' to ME?" Put the K-Man in that role, the movie blows, and John Lennon is alive today.
_Paul S - Wednesday, August 25 2004 @ 04:48 AM EDT (#21906) #
Actually, Hinkley shot Regan because of Jody Foster.

And "You talkin' ta me?" never would've seen the light of day. DeNiro improvised it after seeing Bruce Springsteen say it in concert the night before. God knows what Keanu would've come up with.
