Although New Hampshire and Dunedin suffered losses, the rest of the affiliates picked up victories on what was a fairly good night on the farm. Two of the better pitching prospects suffered losses as Zach Stewart and Chad Jenkins didn’t have strong outings. However, several players continued to swing relatively hot bats, including a couple of outfielders in the low minors.
Las Vegas 7 @ New Orleans 6 – Boxscore
Mike McCoy went for 1-for-3 with a pair of walks. Jarrett Hoffpauir was 1-for-5. Chris Lubanski and Jason Lane each had a pair of hits. Lubanski scored two runs while Lane walked and hit a two-run home run. Dan Perales and Manny Mayorson each went hitless. Raul Chavez was 1-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI. Brad Emaus and Aaron Mathews each had a pair of hits that included a double. Emaus scored twice and had 2 RBI and Mathews drove in a run.
Lance Broadway started and went 6 innings. He allowed 3 earned runs and picked up the win to improve to 3-11. Broadway struck out four and walked two. Sean Henn and Steven Register each pitched a scoreless inning, although Henn allowed three hits. Jeremy Accardo surrendered four hits and a walk in the 9th inning and allowed three runs, two earned.
Binghamton 5 @ New Hampshire 2 - Boxscore
Zach Stewart threw 5.1 innings and surrendered 7 hits. He struck out six while walking two. Binghamton scored 3 runs off Stewart to send Stewart’s record to 8-3. Daniel Farquhar gave the Fisher Cats 0.2 scoreless innings, but Alan Farina and Ronald Uviedo were less successful in relief, surrendering one and two runs, respectively.
Adam Calderone and Callix Crabbe each had a pair of hits that included a double and scored a run. Adeiny Hechevarria, Eric Thames and John Buck, who was DHing, each had one hit. David Cooper was 1-for-3 and also reached base via the free pass. Darin Mastroianni drew the team’s other walk and stole his 42nd base of the year.
Daytona 9 @ Dunedin 3 – Boxscore
Chad Jenkins surrendered four runs in 5 innings and took the loss while his ERA rose to 4.82. Jenkins allowed 9 hits and struck out three. Boomer Potts allowed two runs on three hits in his relief inning and Ross Buckwalter allowed three runs over 3 innings on 7 hits.
Dunedin scored three runs on five hits. Anthony Gose hit a solo home run in the 9th inning. Prior to that, Concepion Rodriguez and Michael McDade each scored a run on an RBI double by Jon Talley. McDade, Jesus Merchan and Kenny Wilson had the other hits for Dunedin, while Ryan Schimpf, Ryan Goins and Brian van Kirk were all held hitless.
South Bend 5 @ Lansing 10 – Boxscore
Last week I gave my first star to Brad McElroy and he challenged me not to repeat that this week by going 4-for-5 with a stolen base, RBI and run scored. However, he may have competitors among his teammates, as Jake Marisnick went 2-for-5 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored and KC Hobson was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, a walk and 3 runs scored. They weren’t the only Lugnuts swinging hot bats either, as Kevin was 2-for-4 with a triple and 3 RBI and Sean Ochinko went 3-for-5. Michael Crouse was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI and Justin Jackson scored three runs on one hit. It wasn’t all smiles though, as Kevin Ahrens and Jonathan Del Campo went 0-for-10.
Egan Smith started for the Lugnuts and allowed four runs, three earned, over 5 innings. Smith struck out five and allowed five hits. Matt Wright pitched 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, striking out three. Brian Slover gave up a run, but pitched 1.2 innings to finish the game.
Williamsport 5 @ Auburn 9 – Boxscore
Jesse Hernandez had a fine start for Auburn, bur didn’t receive a decision as Travis Garrett allowed the lead to slip away. Hernandez went 5 innings and allowed an unearned run on four hits and two walks. He struck out eight, but Garrett allowed a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game 3-3. However, Auburn pulled away with six in the bottom of the inning. Josh Outman came in but didn’t retire a batter and turned the ball over to Shawn Griffith who allowed 1 run while picking up a 3 inning save.
The top of the lineup provided a big offensive boost for Auburn as the first four batters: Jonathan Jones, Gustavo Pierre, Oliver Dominguez and Marcus Knecht each had two hits. Jones scored twice, stole two bases and drove in a run. Pierre had a pair of doubles, 2 RBI, a walk and a run while Dominguez scored a run and stole two bases. Knecht continued to swing a hot bat with a triple and a homer, a walk, two runs scored and 4 RBI. Matt Nuzzo went 1-for-3 before Andy Fermin pinch-hit for him and drove in a run. Lance Durham drew a pair of walks and Jack Murphy added a double. Meanwhile, Marcus Brisker was successful at turning the lineup over to the top as the number 9 batter was 3-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases.
GCL Phillies 3 @ GCL Blue Jays 4 – Boxscore
Ronald Melendez went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI and scored half of the team’s runs. Chris Hawkins went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Kellen Sweeney and Art Charles went 1-for-4. Melvin Garcia and Shane Optiz each added a hit and Garcia scored a run.
Jose Vargas picked up his first victory of the year, throwing 7 innings and making his longest start of the year. The Phillies got 8 hits off Vargas. Although he didn’t walk anybody, Vargas struggled with his control at times and hit two batters. Alex Pepe and Matthew Morgal each threw scoreless innings of relief, although they combined to walk three batters.
