Although New Hampshire and Dunedin suffered losses, the rest of the affiliates picked up victories on what was a fairly good night on the farm. Two of the better pitching prospects suffered losses as Zach Stewart and Chad Jenkins didn’t have strong outings. However, several players continued to swing relatively hot bats, including a couple of outfielders in the low minors.

Las Vegas 7 @ New Orleans 6Boxscore

Mike McCoy went for 1-for-3 with a pair of walks. Jarrett Hoffpauir was 1-for-5. Chris Lubanski and Jason Lane each had a pair of hits. Lubanski scored two runs while Lane walked and hit a two-run home run. Dan Perales and Manny Mayorson each went hitless. Raul Chavez was 1-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI. Brad Emaus and Aaron Mathews each had a pair of hits that included a double. Emaus scored twice and had 2 RBI and Mathews drove in a run.

Lance Broadway started and went 6 innings. He allowed 3 earned runs and picked up the win to improve to 3-11. Broadway struck out four and walked two. Sean Henn and Steven Register each pitched a scoreless inning, although Henn allowed three hits. Jeremy Accardo surrendered four hits and a walk in the 9th inning and allowed three runs, two earned.

Binghamton 5 @ New Hampshire 2 - Boxscore

Zach Stewart threw 5.1 innings and surrendered 7 hits. He struck out six while walking two. Binghamton scored 3 runs off Stewart to send Stewart’s record to 8-3. Daniel Farquhar gave the Fisher Cats 0.2 scoreless innings, but Alan Farina and Ronald Uviedo were less successful in relief, surrendering one and two runs, respectively.

Adam Calderone and Callix Crabbe each had a pair of hits that included a double and scored a run. Adeiny Hechevarria, Eric Thames and John Buck, who was DHing, each had one hit. David Cooper was 1-for-3 and also reached base via the free pass. Darin Mastroianni drew the team’s other walk and stole his 42nd base of the year.

Daytona 9 @ Dunedin 3Boxscore

Chad Jenkins surrendered four runs in 5 innings and took the loss while his ERA rose to 4.82. Jenkins allowed 9 hits and struck out three. Boomer Potts allowed two runs on three hits in his relief inning and Ross Buckwalter allowed three runs over 3 innings on 7 hits.

Dunedin scored three runs on five hits. Anthony Gose hit a solo home run in the 9th inning. Prior to that, Concepion Rodriguez and Michael McDade each scored a run on an RBI double by Jon Talley. McDade, Jesus Merchan and Kenny Wilson had the other hits for Dunedin, while Ryan Schimpf, Ryan Goins and Brian van Kirk were all held hitless.

South Bend 5 @ Lansing 10Boxscore

Last week I gave my first star to Brad McElroy and he challenged me not to repeat that this week by going 4-for-5 with a stolen base, RBI and run scored. However, he may have competitors among his teammates, as Jake Marisnick went 2-for-5 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored and KC Hobson was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, a walk and 3 runs scored. They weren’t the only Lugnuts swinging hot bats either, as Kevin was 2-for-4 with a triple and 3 RBI and Sean Ochinko went 3-for-5. Michael Crouse was 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI and Justin Jackson scored three runs on one hit. It wasn’t all smiles though, as Kevin Ahrens and Jonathan Del Campo went 0-for-10.

Egan Smith started for the Lugnuts and allowed four runs, three earned, over 5 innings. Smith struck out five and allowed five hits. Matt Wright pitched 2.1 scoreless innings of relief, striking out three. Brian Slover gave up a run, but pitched 1.2 innings to finish the game.

Williamsport 5 @ Auburn 9Boxscore

Jesse Hernandez had a fine start for Auburn, bur didn’t receive a decision as Travis Garrett allowed the lead to slip away. Hernandez went 5 innings and allowed an unearned run on four hits and two walks. He struck out eight, but Garrett allowed a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game 3-3. However, Auburn pulled away with six in the bottom of the inning. Josh Outman came in but didn’t retire a batter and turned the ball over to Shawn Griffith who allowed 1 run while picking up a 3 inning save.

The top of the lineup provided a big offensive boost for Auburn as the first four batters: Jonathan Jones, Gustavo Pierre, Oliver Dominguez and Marcus Knecht each had two hits. Jones scored twice, stole two bases and drove in a run. Pierre had a pair of doubles, 2 RBI, a walk and a run while Dominguez scored a run and stole two bases. Knecht continued to swing a hot bat with a triple and a homer, a walk, two runs scored and 4 RBI. Matt Nuzzo went 1-for-3 before Andy Fermin pinch-hit for him and drove in a run. Lance Durham drew a pair of walks and Jack Murphy added a double. Meanwhile, Marcus Brisker was successful at turning the lineup over to the top as the number 9 batter was 3-for-4 with two runs and two stolen bases.

GCL Phillies 3 @ GCL Blue Jays 4Boxscore

Ronald Melendez went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI and scored half of the team’s runs. Chris Hawkins went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Kellen Sweeney and Art Charles went 1-for-4. Melvin Garcia and Shane Optiz each added a hit and Garcia scored a run.

Jose Vargas picked up his first victory of the year, throwing 7 innings and making his longest start of the year. The Phillies got 8 hits off Vargas. Although he didn’t walk anybody, Vargas struggled with his control at times and hit two batters. Alex Pepe and Matthew Morgal each threw scoreless innings of relief, although they combined to walk three batters.

Three Stars:
3rd Star – Jesse Hernandez, 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 8 K
2nd Star – Brad McElroy, 4-5, R, RBI, SB, 4 TB
1st Star – Marcus Knecht, 2-4, 2 R, 3B, HR, 4 RBI, BB, 7 TB

Ever wonder if the Jays were married to the Verducci Rule?

wonder no more - Chad Jenkins is 39.2 IP beyond his college high.

by the way, unless my list is off, Jenkins went on three days rest too.

He only pitched 1 inning on Aug 14. So the rest is not an issue. However, he has been rather non-great in Dunedin, so maybe it's time to shut him down.

Dunedin has the same problem as NH - looming playoffs and a thinning pitching staff.

Especially with Alvarez disabled (and ineffective long before that)

by the way, speaking of shortage of pitching - since he finished he rehab, Scott Richmond has bounced on and off the DL now three times i think - what's his deal?

My guess is he is trying to avoid shoulder surgery....

Well I think that the Verducci "Rule" being immutable has long been disputed. There are only a couple of more weeks in the minor league season, presumably the team has a pretty good beat on things, they have generally been conservative with young pitchers innings.

I heard Richmond had a sore back.  Shawn Hill had that too a week or so ago.  Maybe the rehab they are doing is being done at night and not during the day ;-)

I was listening to the Fishercats game last night and Danny Farquhar came in with 1 out in the 6th, but when he came out to start the 7th had an issue that appeared to involve a blister on his throwing hand and had to be replaced by Alan Farina. Does anyone have more information on Farquhar?

Just coming back to the Jays wish to have an extra team for next season.  I have confirmed with the Jays that they are looking at an extra short-season team because of all the high school kids they are signing, as well as the Dominican and Venezuelan kids who could be brought to the US.  The difficulty is finding a spot.  All leagues have an even number of teams so you can't just add one team.  The Jays have to find a major league team that is looking to drop a short-season team or they have to find a major league team that is looking to add a short-season team so they can pair up.  Additionally many leagues have rules preventing two affiliates for the same major league team to play in their league for competitive reasons.  So the adding of an extra team is tricky and could take some time before we know.  Adding a second GCL team might be an easier option but the Jays might look to add a team between Auburn and the GCL to allow players to move up.

I looked at why this is an issue.  Here is a list of players, born in 1990 or later, who will be in need of playing time next year.  It does not include players from the DSL, other than Nessy, nor does it include next years draftees, obviously.

SP: (12) Deivy Estrada; Justin Nicolino; Carlos Pina; Aaron Sanchez; Noah Syndergaard; Mitchell Taylor; Denny Valdez; Jose Vargas; Griffin Murphy; Zak Adams; Myles Jaye; Adaric Kelly

C: Santiago Nessy

1B: Art Charles

2B: Daniel Arcila; Brandon Mims

SS: Shane Opitz; Gari Pena; Dickie Thon

3B: Chris Hawkins; Bryson Namba; Kellen Sweeney; Seth Connor

OF: Melvin Garcia; Angel Gomez; Dalton Pompey; Carlos Ramirez

The Jays have a lot of pitchers, twelve listed, enough starters for two teams.  They alos\so have two viable players for most positions, other than catcher, first base or the outfield.  Again the DSL and the 2011 draft can fill those holes.

So the Jays do need an extra team for 2011, we just don't know where it will be.

I think the Jays are looking at converting Conner to catcher.

That's what I would have guessed, Gerry.  The Vancouver Canadians' affiliation agreement with the A's ends after this year.  You'd think that the Jays might be interested.:)

Just checked and it looks like the official Jays draft page has been fully updated with the final signings.

Final total: 33 of 56 signed.
Top 10: 10 of 10
11-20: 6 of 10
21-30: 7 of 10
31-40: 5 of 10
41-50: 4 of 10
51-56: 1 of 6

Makes a lot of sense - top picks all signed, took a few risks in 11-20 that didn't work out, then probably got all they expected/needed for the rest.

By position...
12: RHP
7: OF (2 CF, 2 LF, 2 RF, 1 OF)
6: LHP
4: 2B
3: SS
1: 3B

None of the 3 catchers drafted signed, another 10 RHP didn't sign as well, 4 LHP, 3 OF, 1 each of IF/2B/3B.

Not a single 1B/DH was drafted by the Jays this year, with just 6 corner OF'ers drafted (4 signed). Logan Ehlers (8th round) was the highest non-signed and it seems they wanted him. Tyler Shreve was probably more of a draft and follow - great talent, 1 cent head from the sounds of it and the Jays probably decided he just wasn't worth the headache.

The youngest signed was Dalton Pompey - born December 11th 1992 - just 6 years older than my oldest child...not long till those start appearing. Sigh, I'm getting old.
Gerry - Thursday, August 19 2010 @ 11:51 AM EDT (#221176) #
Vancouver could be a fit and it might explain why the Jays aren't saying much about where they are looking.  The negotiations can't happen (officially) until after the season ends  and the Oakland PDC runs out.

Hmmm. What happens if a team, such as the Jays, want another minor league affiliate and go out and take it when someone like Oakland wants to keep it but ends up without one after the musical chairs ends? Is that allowed? I could see it happening here easily.

Could a ML team go into a deal with an unaffiliated league? IE: make a deal with Winnipeg to stock their team? Might not be ideal but could work.

Other sources indicate that Jay Johnson, Adaric Kelly and Seth Conner are signed as well.

Check that.  BA is now showing that Jay Johnson is unsigned after showing him as signed for like a couple of months.
ayjackson - Thursday, August 19 2010 @ 12:42 PM EDT (#221182) #
I don't think Independent league rules allow for affilitations, coupled with the fact that 18 year old kids would be largely outclassed on an Indy team.
ayjackson - Thursday, August 19 2010 @ 01:10 PM EDT (#221183) #
Just updating the draft signing tally.  Per BA, the Jays have spent $11,115,900 on 20 draftees.  They are still awaiting bonus info on 13 players drafted in the 20th round and later.
John Northey - Thursday, August 19 2010 @ 01:34 PM EDT (#221187) #
So odds are none of the 13 other players got more than $50-100k to sign I'd guess, leading to a total of around $12 million. The $16 million budget that was rumoured suddenly seems about right eh?

Mix in international free agents and the Jays easily spent more than the 2006 Marlin payroll (just under $15 mil). No team was that cheap this year, but still fun to look at.

Given the payroll for guys who are here is $62 million (plus $10 for BJ Ryan and $6 going to Roy Halladay) the net spent on payroll & ex-players & draft would be $90 million plus international guys which would push it over $100 million. Should be interesting to see if that investment works better than blowing it on guys like Frank Thomas.

Several teams own affiliates in the Appalachian League while also having an affiliate in the GCL.  For current Appalachian League teams that are not owned by a major league club, Burlington and Pulaski have not yet renewed their PDCs for 2011 with their current organizations.

I don't think Vancouver would be that good of a choice.  Depending on what happens with Toronto's AAA affiliate, having a team in Vancouver could be a travel nightmare for the roving instructors, and it also might make it difficult to promote/demote players quickly.  That said, back in the '90s the Blue Jays benefitted from having two Canadian affiliates because of the visa rules at the time.  Unfortunately I can't recall the exact details, so I don't know if having a Canadian affiliate might still be beneficial in that regard.

From 1997 to 2002 the Athletics had two affiliates in the California League, so it may be possible for the Jays to have a second team in the NY-Penn League or the GCL
mendocino - Thursday, August 19 2010 @ 03:01 PM EDT (#221189) #
Angels have two teams in the Pioneer League (Ogden & Orem). Northwest League (Vancouver) is designated a Short-Season league, same as the NY-Penn league and might be a bit of a jump. Going back to the Appalachian League based in the East would be the ideal spot but a possible return to Pulaski?? Personnally I would choose the Idaho Chuckers in the Pioneer League...but only for selfish reasons...they seem to broadcast most of their games on MILB TV.
Mike Green - Thursday, August 19 2010 @ 03:05 PM EDT (#221191) #
The Idaho Chuckers would be a great place for the young pitchers.
Original Ryan - Thursday, August 19 2010 @ 08:53 PM EDT (#221193) #
I looked further into the issue of having PDCs with two minor league teams in the same league.  It's prohibited unless the team has the approval of the Commissioner.  It appears that the Royals were the last team to do this, when they had two affiliates in the Arizona League in 2003.  Unless it's a short-term/temporary situation, I doubt the Blue Jays would get approval to have a second affiliate in the NY-Penn League or the GCL.

Mendocino mentioned Ogden and Orem in the Pioneer League.  While Oren is affiliated with the Angels, it looks like Ogden is actually with the Dodgers.

#2JBrumfield - Thursday, August 19 2010 @ 09:01 PM EDT (#221194) #

I'm pretty sure Pulaski will tell the Jays to GFT because they left Pulaski high and dry in 2006.    That left Pulaski without baseball in 2007 before the Mariners entered the picture in 2008.  I think it would be great if the Jays could land Vancouver as an affiliate.  Nat Bailey is a jewel of a park.  Besides, Canada's team should have at least one minor league club in Canada, if not more.

I think what we really need is another full-season team.  Get these kids out there playing.

I don't think that's possible. There are exactly 30 teams on every level in full season play. However, the further up the ladder you get, the more non-prospects are on every team, so you can just have less of those.

TamRa - Friday, August 20 2010 @ 12:47 PM EDT (#221206) #
you are right about the "30 teams" but on the non-prospects....it seems to me real prospects need to be playing full time, the reserve players ought to be organizational soldiers.

the problem arises when you have - for instance - two shortstops that ought to be at AA annd one of them is on the wrong level if both get to play every day.

But i think that's not enough to justify another high level team because it's a relatively rare occurance at upper levels.

for instance, i was looking ahead last night at the potential 2011 minor league rosters and you are immediately drawn to the shortstops:

AAA: Hech - seems like hes capeabe of being challenged further
AA: Goins - not hitting well enough at Dunedin to justify a promotion but...
A+: Jackson - coming on some of late, still not dominating the league but...
A: Pierre - watchers insist he's doing better than his stats indicate and one would think they want him on a full season team regardless of his weak rates and besides...
SS: Thon - seems the obvious candidate to start here instead of the GCL, but he can't do that unless pierre moves up which he can't do unless Jackson does which...you get the picture.

now, you can hold Goins and Jackson back at the start of the year until the SS team begins play and all you lose is a month of game time for Pierre, but laying aside the specifics of these players - it illustrates the problem.
If you want, for instance, Jackson to move up and Goins isn't ready, then you have to juggle positions as happened with Pastornicky this year, or sit someone too much.

There's no easy answer to things like that.

Moe - Friday, August 20 2010 @ 01:51 PM EDT (#221211) #
it seems to me real prospects need to be playing full time, the reserve players ought to be organizational soldiers.

I completely agree. However, the further you go up, the more full time slots are filled with non-prospects and organizational soldiers. Sometimes there might be an excess at one or two positions (SS right now?) but overall the team will never have enough prospects to justify tw AA or AAA teams, at the most two low-A teams. But that seems virtually impossible since you would have to newly create that team and find another orgization that is interested. Doubt that will happen any time soon.

Kelekin - Friday, August 20 2010 @ 07:51 PM EDT (#221233) #
I think the Goins/Jackson situation will be interesting.  I would like Hech to have at least 2 or 3 months in AA next year.  Jackson at least -can- play 3B or 2B if they need him to, but there is no question both should be in Dunedin next year.

I do think we could see a great deal of ineffective players getting released this year.
jerjapan - Friday, August 20 2010 @ 09:17 PM EDT (#221237) #
It doesn't seem unreasonable to me to have a few AAAA vets - like McCoy and Hoff - on your AAA team.  Sometimes these players turn into Scott Downs / Jesse Carlson, sometimes they can serve a mentor role (Raul Chavez?) and sometimes they can get called up to sit on the bench for two weeks without hindering their development.  AA (and below) should be the teams loaded with prospects.  Frankly, I wouldn't mind at all if Stewart and Drabeck don't pitch in Vegas at all, given the conditions for pitchers there.

And didn't Syracuse get tired of our relentless losing, with us ending up banished to Vegas?  The right AAAA can be big contributors to the win/loss record.

It's unfortunate since it had been (seemingly) a good relationship for both organizations.  Back when Toronto's AAA affiliate was in Syracuse, having Auburn next door was pretty convenient for roving staff.  I wonder if the Jays might be looking at affiliating with one of the teams in New England or eastern New York to line things up better with New Hampshire (which is signed through 2012).

AUBURN — When the Class-A short season baseball season ends for the Auburn Doubledays in two weeks, it’s likely the team’s affiliation with the Toronto Blue Jays will conclude, as well.

Gerry - Saturday, August 21 2010 @ 09:16 AM EDT (#221250) #

The Auburn question is this: who is precipitating the change?  Are Toronto unhappy for some reason?  Is Auburn unhappy?  The owners of minor league teams want a winner to bring in more fans, the parent club wants a nice park where they can develop their prospects.  The two objectives don't always align with Syracuse being the most obvious recent example.

There is a news still to come out on this.
