Almost two weeks of sitting around and waiting his turn didn't bother Jon Garland very much.

The White Sox are half-way to the World Series, and I have just had an awful thought.

See, when I seeded my rooting interest in the post-season, I had the White Sox third. Pretty much by default, but third they were. Behind Atlanta and San Diego. Remember them?

The Braves and Padres are now wondering about 2006 - how do we replace Rafael Furcal? Must we replace Brian Giles? And I guess I'm supposed to be cheering for the White Sox.

I can't do it. I just can't. Why not?

Two words. Ken Harrelson. I can't possibly cheer for them until... he gone.

So it would certainly help if Vlad Guerrero and Garrett Anderson could, you know, get a base hit or two. And you thought Alex Rodriguez just had a rough series....

Other news - the Cardinals added to their 40 man roster a 26 year old outfielder who divided his season between low A ball and aa Springfield, where he hit .243. Huh?

Well, it's Rick Ankiel and the Cards would risk losing him in the Rule 5 draft if they didn't add him to the 40 man. And surely someone would be tempted by the memory of Ankiel's fastball. Furthermore - Ankiel closed with a big rush at AA, hitting 10 HRs and driving in 30 runs in his final 28 games. Furthermore, the Cardinals youngest outfielder - Jim Edmonds - is 35 years old, Larry Walker is probably going to retire, and even the reserves are elderly. So why not...

Both leagues are in action today:

St. Louis (Morris) at Houston (Clemens) 4:00
Chicago (Garcia) at Los Angeles (Santana) 8:00

Magpie, as far as I know Harrelson is at home as none of these games are covered by the Sox TV network. So you can cheer for the Harrelson-free Sox.

That's some comfort. Still, the thought of Hawk in 2006 with his world champions.... fear and loathing. Dread.

Astros all the way, and as a confirmed Yankee basher, I am delighted. There may be two Arnold's in the universe, but there is only one Roger.

If anybody has ESPN Classic Canada they are doing a "World Series Weekend". Right now they are showing Game 6 of the 86 Series, which will be followed by Game 6 from 1992. Tomorrow's games include the 1977 Series (LA vs. NYY), the 1988 Series (OAK vs. LA) and the 1993 Series (TOR vs. PHI).

This is the first time that I can remember the channel actually showing classic baseball. With the two Toronto games scheduled for two and a half hours, they are most likely skipping over parts of the game, but it should still be fun to watch.

I'd like to see an all Midwest World Series;
Chicago White Sox vs. St.Louis Cardinals or Tony LaRussa battles his former employer Jerry Reinsdorf. Who will win?

It's hard to believe that nearly 20 years ago Jerry Reinsdorf fired Tony LaRussa as manager of the Chicago White Sox.

It's also hard to believe that 20 years ago Bobby Cox resigns as Manager of the AL East Champions Toronto Blue Jays to become the G.M. of the Atlanta Braves. Cox's replacement Jimy Williams.

Time flies!

As always, it's all about Phil Cuzzi. Honestly, the guy's gotta go.

Cuzzi's handling of Jim Edmonds' complaints are textbook for Cuzzi. It comes from the "Do Not Dare Question My Calls and I Will Pay No Attention to the Situation in the Ballgame" edition.

Cuzzi has no business umpiring little league games, let alone postseason games. What a joke.

That must be one proud umpire.

Meanwhile, in Anaheim KRod is warming up for the defining appearance of his career to this point. Escobar, who is turning into the goat of this series, has left him a bit of a jam...
