Auburn notches their first win, Dunedin and Charleston play meaningless games, Syracuse get thirteen hits and lose, New Hampshire play extra innings and win, and Pulaski start their season tonight.

Columbus 9 Syracuse 7

Syracuse scored four in the first inning on doubles by Glenn Williams, Jorge Sequea and Shawn Fagan. Columbus took the lead with five runs in the fifth off Chief starter Ryan Glynn. Syracuse tied it in the fifth on two singles and two hit batsmen. The tie held until the eighth when, with two outs, Aquilino Lopez allowed single, double, double, walk and a double. The Chiefs scored two consolation runs in the ninth. Lopez took the loss while Colter Bean got the win for Columbus.

Sequea continued his hot hitting going 3-5 with two doubles. Stubby Clapp, Glenn Williams, Simon Pond, Gabe Gross and Shawn Fagan each had two hits.

Game Story

Trenton 3 New Hampshire 4

Cam Reimers, Dan Jackson and John Ogiltree pitched eight strong innings yesterday and New Hampshire took a 3-0 lead into the ninth. Anton French got New Hampshire on the board in the first inning with a single, a stolen base, and a run scored on a sac fly from Aaron Hill. NH added a second run in the second on hits by Mikael Jova and Dominic Rich, and a third in the seventh when Mike Snyder scored after singling and stealing a base.

Ogiltree had two outs in the ninth, with one runner on, when the hitter grounded to Hill. Hill underhanded the ball to Dominic Rich, but Rich dropped it, and the next hitter jacked a three run, game tying, home run.

Jordan DeJong pitched a perfect top of the tenth. In the home half of the tenth French doubled with one out and moved to third on a groundball. With two out Aaron Hill grounded to third and, as Rich did in the ninth, the fielder made an error to give the win to NH.

Aaron Hill was 0-4 but his 13 game hit streak ended.

Game Story

Dunedin 9 Sarasota 5

This was the final game of the first half, a nothing game with Dunedin having already clinched the first half title. There were five lead changes in the game and hitters had the upper hand. Dunedin used five pitchers including Justin Maureau who hit his first speed bump in his comeback. Maureau walked three batters in two thirds of an inning of work. Manny Mayerson had three hits and Raul Tablado had two including a home run. Scott Dragicevich also had two hits.

Lexington 1 Charleston 0

Charleston had clinched the first half title so this game was also meaningless. Charleston registered only four hits and Justin James pitched five shoutout innings. Jordy Templett took the loss allowing a single and a triple in the seventh inning.

Game Story

Auburn 8 Mahoning Valley 5

After losing two low scoring games, Auburn decided to slug their way to a win. Auburn had 14 hits in the game.

Auburn built a 7-0 lead through the top of the sixth. Mahoning Valley answered with four in the sixth but Auburn held them at bay for the rest of the game. A boxscore or accounts of this game are not available. As they say on TV "the boxscore and accounts or descriptions of this game remain the property of minor league baseball", and therefore you cannot see them. It looks like there could be a hitting star in this game somewhere, so in the absence of another overwhelming candidate, I will delay awarding the third star until the details of this game are available.

Funny, BA has not even updated the Auburn stats to reflect yesterdays game. Jordy Templets best outing in Charleston still shows as Peralata pitching.
_Marc - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 11:25 AM EDT (#56315) #
Unfortunately everyone gets their minor league stats through sportsnetwork.com and they have screwed up the information and links for the Auburn game, so it is impossible to find a box score anywhere. I've tried to use some of my journalism contacts to get a box score, but Mondays are always a hard time to try and get a hold of us newspaper people, so I'm not holding my breath.

Looking at the above information, it's ironic how poorly Syracuse is going considering everyone "in the know" was predicting they would have an amazing season this year with so many solid prospects on the team (Bush, Gross, Rios, Quiroz, etc)

JF Griffin - what the heck has happened to this former first round pick with a sweet swing? He was suppose to be the next John Olerud. Did he just get too homer happy? He batted more than .400 in college.
_Sneeps - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 11:40 AM EDT (#56316) #
Has anybody else noticed how much Baseballamerica.com sucks compared to last year?
It's just night and day.
Gerry - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 11:41 AM EDT (#56317) #
Re: Syracuse you will get a couple of answers. The first is that half the Syracuse starters are playing with the Jays due to injuries. Zaun, Estelella, Clark, Rios, Towers, Chulk, Nakamura were all in Syracuse this year and expected by the Jays to be there longer.

Second reason is that JP has said he needs another year or two to fully stock the system. New Hampshire are winning and in second place, Dunedin and Charleston are first half champions. JP will have to make sure Syracuse have a better team next year as the owners are getting restless with the losing teams.

JFG takes a lot of pitches so he walks a lot and he strikes out a lot. He has also been injured each year. He has not yet shown why he was a first round pick. Griffin might have an issue with pitch recognition, pure speculation on my behalf, but when I saw him he appeared to take too many pitches.
Gerry - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 11:44 AM EDT (#56318) #
Sneeps, do you mean content or timeliness?

Each day you get an update and that is it for regular updates. I think the subscription pays off for big one-off stories, such as the draft, the top prospect lists, the end of season reviews. Day to day coverage is minimal.

Maybe when the college season ends there will be a pick-up in activity.
_MatO - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 11:46 AM EDT (#56319) #
Does anyone know the home/road splits for JFG?
_dp - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 12:11 PM EDT (#56320) #
This is a make-or-break year for the SkyChiefs. Hopefully, they'll start to play better, but there was some talk of the Syracuse ending the affiliation, which would suck. The Chiefs are pretty much why I became a Jays fan, and it is really exciting to be in Syracuse when the Jays are winning, which I'm confident they'll be doing again soon. There was some disappointment with perceived neglect of the team's need for good AAAA players (like Zaun, Estellea, Clark, Bernard, Hermansen). Hopefully Syracuse will appreciate the effort even though it hasn't worked out. That should've been a sick OF this year- Hermansen tore up AAA last year, Rios obviously, and Gross looked like he'd gotten things together. They've even had A-Lo most of the season, but he's been horrid.

COMN for an unformatted boxscore and game story (mainly from the Scrappers POV) from the Auburn game.

27th rounder Casey McKenzie pitched 4 innings of 1 hit shutout ball with 6K's for the DoubleDays. Mathews, Esposito, Acey, Metropoulos, Nielsen and Hicks all had two hits while Nielsen had the only HR of the game.
_Marc - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 12:32 PM EDT (#56322) #
There's Erik Rico pitching again... I wonder if he has made the full switched to lefthanded reliever or if he's going to try to be a Brooks Kieschnick type.

Hopefully once some more draft picks sign, Acey and Esposito can get up to Charleston, where they belonged at the beginning of the season. I don't know why Eric Arnold, a converted 2nd baseman, ranks ahead of Esposito... besides his age.
_Marc - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 12:37 PM EDT (#56323) #
I was amazed at how slow Baseball America was on draft day, their bread and butter. I switched to MLB.com about 20 minutes into the draft because BA was about 15-20 minutes behind in their reporting of the picks. It was so much better in 2003. I think they have a few less staff members now, whether it's to save costs or what, but it is definitely taking a toll. I agree their day-to-day coverage is terrible.
_Marc - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 12:53 PM EDT (#56324) #
In the same vein... has anyone noticed how poorly run the Jays site has been? Often times they are one of the last outlets to break Jays' info and their minor league section hasn't been properly updated all season and it's almost July! They haven't recorded any transactions and the rosters are either not there or out of date.

I'm really not a fan of Fordin's reporting either, for that matter.
_Moffatt - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 01:04 PM EDT (#56325) #
I'm really not a fan of Fordin's reporting either, for that matter.

Really? I love Fordin's stuff. Well, to each his own.

I agree on the out of dateness of the rosters, though. That's a pet peeve of mine as well.
_Rob - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 01:17 PM EDT (#56326) #
Out of date?

There's only one Alley Cat who's not listed on the MLB site that is on MiLB.com, and that's Jordy Templet.
For Syracuse, it's exactly the same.
For Dunedin, Maureau and Templet are the extra ones on the official site.
But New Hampshire is completely blank, I'll give you that.

So, other than Maureau and Templet, and what must be an error on the NH section, there's nothing wrong with the MLB rosters.

Of course, I may be reading the wrong pages, so feel free to ignore me if I'm way off on this.
Gerry - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 01:18 PM EDT (#56327) #
The third star goes to Eric Nielsen, a 12th round pick from UNLV. Nielsen went 2-4 and hit a two run home run for Auburn. I believe Eric is the first 2004 draftee to be awarded a star.

I will edit the introduction to show the third star.

Quiroz would be their over Navarro, if not for the injury.
_Max Parkinson - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 03:26 PM EDT (#56330) #
Would he be there over Navarro, or Quintero? I imagine that the better prospect (Dioner) would make it, rather than the glove man...
Gerry - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 03:45 PM EDT (#56331) #
Gregg Raymundo, who the Jays acquired for Dunedin earlier this year when Tablado was hurt, has been traded to Montreal.

This probably completes the Julius Matos trade.
_JohnnyS99 - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 03:56 PM EDT (#56332) #
Quiroz put up better numbers then Navvaro in AA.
_MatO - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 03:58 PM EDT (#56333) #
Milb.com now has the boxscore for yesterday's Auburn game.
_Ryan01 - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 04:08 PM EDT (#56334) #
But Navarro is also 2.5 years younger than Quiroz. Navarro would be there regardless of Quiroz's health I think.
Mike Green - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 04:20 PM EDT (#56335) #
Ryan, it's a tough call. Last year, Quiroz had a significantly better year offensively at double A than Navarro is having there this year. Plus, Quiroz is a better defender. They're both fine prospects.
_JohnnyS99 - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 04:30 PM EDT (#56336) #
Not true, Ryan01, Quiroz had a higher ranking by Baseball America as well and was still 21 in AA. Players heavily touted by BA are usually represented, and Quiroz was only behind Mathis and Mauer.
_Ryan01 - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 04:36 PM EDT (#56337) #
Oh exactly Mike, they're both very good prospects, and I think if Quiroz had been healthy and put up good numbers it would probably be 24 (almost 25) year old Quintero that would be the odd man out, as Max suggested before.

Johnnys99, I'm afraid it is true that Navarro is younger than Quiroz, and 4.5 years younger than Quintero. Which one of Quiroz/Navarro would start is very debateable, but both would likely be there.
_JohnnyS99 - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 04:41 PM EDT (#56338) #
I agree, They both deserve to be their. But Quiroz at 21 was not old for AA, and the age factor did not affect the catcher Rankings at Baseball America.
_Ryan01 - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 08:19 PM EDT (#56339) #
The point was not that Quiroz was old for the league but that Navarro was very young for the league. Age is always a factor when dealing with prospects.

David Bush has pitched 6 innings of 3 hit shutout ball for Syracuse. The game is still tied 0-0 as Alex Graman is matching Bush.
_JohnnyS99 - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 08:31 PM EDT (#56340) #
I agree it is a factor but i doubt that it would be the reason for Quiroz not making the futures roster if healthy. Quiroz was ranked higher then Navvaro in just about every prospct ranking out there. Navvaro was 4th or 5th in the catcher prospect ranking by Baseball America.
_curveball2 - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 08:50 PM EDT (#56341) #
I just found this site on the net while looking for transactions for Blue Jays minor league teams. I live in Charleston WV and attend most of the Alley Cat games. I know there were at least 4 moves today involving our roster. Justin James, Shaun Marcum, Brian Reed, and Ryan Roberts moving up to Dunedin, but I do not know who is replacing them. Any help appreciated as to a good source for transactions besides the sports network.
Mike Green - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 09:03 PM EDT (#56342) #
Thanks, Curveball2. Here at the minor league section of battersbox.ca, we really appreciate eyewitness accounts of players and games. So please feel free to post your observations.

As for transactions, the Dunedin site, dunedinbluejays.com, updates the transactions fairly frequently, but this one is not up yet.
_JohnnyS99 - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 09:08 PM EDT (#56343) #
Wow, 4 promotions. I wonder whos going to New Haven, the rotation still looks pretty packed in Dunedin with Perkins returning. Look For Jordy Templet to start in Charleston.

1.Kurt Isenberg
2.James Vermilyea
3. Ismael Ramirez
4. Vince Perkins
5. Justin James
6. Shawn Marcum
7.Neomor Flores
_Jordan - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 09:13 PM EDT (#56344) #
Curveball, thanks for the tip. It's very unfortunate that most of the minor-league sites don't update their transactions with any kind of frequency. Baseball America's last transactions are for June 1, and Major-League Baseball's minor-league transactions page has nothing past Justin Speier coming off the DL in Dunedin. Pretty pathetic.

Anyway, those four are the likeliest promotions from Charleston, so they make perfect sense. As soon as we can find official confirmation, we'll post a link. And I'll second Mike's invitation for eyewitness acoounts of Jays prospects!
Mike Green - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 09:34 PM EDT (#56345) #
The wheels came off for David Bush in the 7th. A homer followed by three successive doubles did the trick. Syracuse fell 4-0 to Columbus.

Pulaski leads 10-1 in their inaugural game of the season. Yesson Berroa got the start.
Gerry - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 09:45 PM EDT (#56346) #
Bush allowed only three hits and one walk through six. As Mike noted, the wheels came off in the seventh. A home run followed by three doubles.

Russ Adams is back.

As for Dunedin, Vermilyea and Perkins started in the pen and Flores could be headed there.
_Marc - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 10:47 PM EDT (#56347) #
I think the Jays short season teams are cursed. Both have not been updated by The Sports Netork/Minor League Baseball, although The Pulaski Jays Web site has the box score. Really annoying...
_MatO - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 10:58 PM EDT (#56348) #
The Pulaski box is now available on milb.com. It looks like the Jays have also signed 26th rd choice catcher Brian Bormaster since he started the game for Pulaski. He is unsigned on the Baseball America site and wasn't part of the original 25 signings for this draft.
_Peter - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 11:04 PM EDT (#56349) #
As there are no obvious replacements for the pitchers being moved from Charleston to Dunedin, could it be that Purcey and Jackson, when signed will be assigned there instead of to Auburn? Many other teams assign high picks(college) to Low A and occasionally High A. Also Janssen, although signed, has not been assigned, to my knowledge. Ditto for 1b/of Adam Lind. Ryan Klosterman,ss, could also go to Charleston when signed as Auburn seem to have a full slate of players as it is. Will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

As for the abundance of pitchers at Dunedin, perhaps some will go to NH-most likely candidate Vermilyea and almost assuredly Buzachero. This would push Peterson and perhaps Reimers to Syracuse.
_Peter - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 11:25 PM EDT (#56350) #
Some notes on the Pulaski game found at the Pulaski website, not the official one but another one turned up in a web search:

2 hits each for E. Van Camper, J. Chappell and Y. Rodriguez. Home run for J. Chourio.

Pitching 5 innings, 1 ER for Y. Berroa
D. Tate went one inning giving up 3 hits, 2 runs, 1 earned.
A. Martin, M.Ryder and R. Sanchez one inning each of screless ball.
_Chris H - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 11:31 PM EDT (#56351) #
Matt O - yeah, I noticed Bormaster being on the Pulaski roster when it was announced last week. It also appears Corey Hahn RHP (also out of Tulane) is listed on the Pulaski roster but wasnt included in last weeks 25 signings or as being signed on Baseball America...

C.

Is it unusual for the Jays not to have signed their first two (three?) picks yet?
_DaveInNYC - Tuesday, June 22 2004 @ 12:09 AM EDT (#56353) #
Last year's draft was on June 3rd and 4th

Aaron Hill, I believe, signed on June 18th.

This year's draft was on the 7th and the 8th, so it's pretty safe to say that the 2 should be signed soon.
_johnnnyS99 - Tuesday, June 22 2004 @ 12:21 AM EDT (#56354) #
Perkins should stay in the roation, his upside is far greater then Vermilyea and Marcum. ALl the Jays power arms have been disapointing this year ie; Brandon League, Vince Perkins, Franciso Rosario, and the injur to Dustin Mcgowan.
_Ducey - Tuesday, June 22 2004 @ 12:23 AM EDT (#56355) #
I note Brian Reed has been promoted. His numbers, like Bubbies, are sick yet he does not get much love in these parts - I guess minor league closers don't have a great track record. I know he is a 27th rounder, does anyone know what he throws? Is he a soft tosser or what? Maybe they can stretch him out a little?

Why doesn't Auburn's box scores ever get updated? Very frustrating! I just checked their website as well, they haven't even updated it since last year... pathetic. And another thing, why haven't any of the higher draft picks been signed, and the ones who were signed aren't playing. AND Nick Thomas should've started the season in Charleston after tearing it up last year, but apparently he's either injured or not good enough to be playing on opening day in PULASKI. What the hell is going on here?
_johnnnyS99 - Tuesday, June 22 2004 @ 12:43 AM EDT (#56359) #
Holding his own in AA? Are you honestly impressed? You probably want to look at his numbers, does it look like he thros a 99mph heater? How about his k/bb k/9ip? He needs to be starting and getting innings. 22 walks in 44 inings, 33ks? Not exactly impressive Sneeps. He is not exactly domintating , looks like a huge dispoitment to me.
_johnnnyS99 - Tuesday, June 22 2004 @ 12:45 AM EDT (#56360) #
League should of started back in Dunedin, where we all expected him to return. I dont think this year in the pen, is helping his develepment. They gave up on him too early as a starter 21? geez whiz!
_johnnnyS99 - Tuesday, June 22 2004 @ 12:53 AM EDT (#56361) #
Hey what do you know!! at 12:50 the Milb.com website had Auburn at the top of the 1st? Rain delay lol Man, they are pretty slow , it looks like Auburn is the only victim.
_Sneeps - Tuesday, June 22 2004 @ 01:11 AM EDT (#56362) #
No, I think moving League to the pen was a wise decision. He's a 2 or 3 pitch pitcher. One time through the lineup is the best thing he's suited for, until he improves another pitch or two. And I never said he's dominating, but he IS holding his own. His ERA is pretty good at about 3.50, and he's only allowed 36 hits in 46 innings. His peripherals aren't great admittedly, but I think they'll improve once he stops nibbling and just challenges more often. He's never had problems with his control in the past so I don't think it's a problem.
_JohnnyS99 - Tuesday, June 22 2004 @ 01:40 AM EDT (#56363) #
Wise decision at 21 ? When he showed promise as a starter? I think the bullepn move, should be a fall back, but after 1 full season starting in full seaosn ball seems way to premature in my opion.
Gerry - Tuesday, June 22 2004 @ 08:43 AM EDT (#56364) #
Brian Reed is a soft tosser, that is why he is not listed as a prospect.

I think Mahoning Valley might be the problem, not Auburn. The Mahoning Valley web site was down yesterday. Maybe their internet connection is down, not paying their bills?
_coliver - Tuesday, June 22 2004 @ 09:03 AM EDT (#56365) #
Do you think that Glenn Williams will ever get an opportunity in Toronto? So far, he has 15 home runs for the Skychiefs. He finally may be finding his niche.
_coliver - Tuesday, June 22 2004 @ 09:08 AM EDT (#56366) #
What is the scouting report on Yesson Berroa? Is he a real prospect? I may be wrong, but it seems like he has been in "short season" ball for a long time.
_JohnnyS99 - Tuesday, June 22 2004 @ 10:33 AM EDT (#56367) #
Yesson Berroa will be starting his third short season this year, and looks like he turned the corner last year. He is still 20 years old, and JP has been taking his time with all his younger pitching prospects.
_Jordan - Tuesday, June 22 2004 @ 11:41 AM EDT (#56368) #
I love Williams' power, but as long as he has a .303 on-base percentage at Syracuse, he's going to find a promotion difficult to obtain.
