Wow. It doesn't get much better than that. So said Cristian, in his post commenting on the brilliant Game 1 between Boston and Oakland. The quesion is, does it get any better than that?

In a series of articles that will run through the playoffs, I'll pay tribute to the history of postseason baseball. Stay tuned for the Ten Greatest Division Series Games Of All-Time; The Twenty-Five Greatest Championship Series Games of All-Time; and the Fifty Greatest World Series Games of All-Time.

This isn't intended to be a comprehensive narrative about the legendary games in postseason history. Instead, through the help of Retrosheet and various history books, it's an attempt to rank -- and briefly discuss -- the best ballgames in postseason history.

My criteria is simple: It has to be a critical, evenly-matched game with self-contained greatness. For instance, I won't rank historic games -- like Robinson playing in Game 1 in 1947 -- or historic accomplishments -- like Larsen's perfecto or Jackson going deep thrice. It's all about the kind of game that makes baseball more than just statistics and finances.

Hopefully it will inform and spark debate. To get the ball rolling, I'll run a poll where Box denizens can vote on their favourite series of all time. Stay tuned!

My baseball watching hasn't been vast, and I'm probabaly the least educated fan who frequents the Box, but man, those last two games of the Giants v. the Marlins were magical... And I was cheering for the Giants.

I'm so conflicted about cheering for the Marlins when their owner is that ass Loria. The thought of seeing anything he is involved with succeed is sickening.

I had adopted the Giants a smy team, but those plans are clearly out the window. My favorite from here on out has to be the Fish. I also like the Cubs, and the A's at leats wouldn't anger me if they won, unliek the Sox, Yanks, and BRaves.

I haven't seen a lot of this year's games, but for a division series, I'd have to go with the 1986 Astros-Mets series, particularly the deciding game six, where the Astros blew a 3 run lead in the eighth, and eventually lost 7-6 in extra innings, denying Mike Scott a third chance to beat the Mets. Easily one of the most exciting games I've ever watched, and one of the most painful, since I *hate* the Mets.

I really hate that the games are not on FOX- I don't have cable, and have missed some great games. The wallet is thin to be watching them in NYC bars.

Scott,

That was a League Championship series.
