What the hey? Idly wondering why the afternoon playoff game hadn't started yet, I flipped over to the MLB site to realize that the two LCS games are on tonight, at the same time, on the same network. They couldn't give one game to Fox and the other to ESPN, oh no -- that way, fans could have watched the game they preferred and flipped to the other match now and again. And heaven forfend we have a day game so that each contest could be played by itself -- the almighty advertisers wouldn't like that.

Major-league baseball is too important to be left in the hands of Major League Baseball.

So are they both on Fox, then?

Maybe those of us with multiple time zone satellite or digital cable will be able to find one on Sportsnet and the other on a Fox affiliate. But that's not exactly the majority of viewers.

Remember, these are the same brilliant fellas who warned of "bad blood" between the Jays and Rays, effectively creating it out of thin air. Expecting them to do anything in a sane or logical manner is...well, really wishful thinking.

I believe Sportsnet is airing the Cubs-Marlins tonight. The Fox station in Boston (which is what I get with ExpressVu) is carrying the Red Sox-Yankees game tonight, so I imagine Fox in Buffalo would be doing the same thing.

Great news -- thanks, Ryan. Our friends south of the border aren't so lucky, unfortunately.

One game is on Fox (network). The other is on FX (cable). Both are available to watch in the US.

I find it ironic that when there's 4 series going on baseball is able play each game at separate times, but when there's only 2 series they schedule them at the same time.

I spoke with the very nice Phyllis of FOX 29 (WUTV Buffalo) just now and she confirmed that it will be Boston @ New York tonight.

According to today's Star, Buffalo's Fox affiliate is carrying the Red Sox-Yankees game and Sportsnet the NL game. If you have basic cable in southern Ontario, you'll probably be able to channel-flip.

Since we don't get FX up here, Sportsnet should continue to adjust its schedule to accomodate Canadian viewers, like they seem to be doing tonight. If they show the same game as Fox, they're just as stupid and self-serving as MLB.

Today will be the last time 2 playoff games are scheduled at the same time this year - we seem to have dodged a bullet in Southern Ontario (but only because Fox-Buffalo is an unofficial Yankees station).

I'm surprised Sportsnet East isn't carrying Boston-NY - you'd think that most people in the Maritimes would rather watch the Sox.
Gitz - Wednesday, October 08 2003 @ 04:05 PM EDT (#67261) #
My guess is that if the Giants/Braves were playing their second game, instead of America's REAL team, the Cubs, it would have been an afternoon game. But with the Cubs and Yankees both playing, the lure of big advertising dollars was too much for Fox. Even if the games are being carried by both Fox and by Fox Sports (insert region here), it's still weak.

I hope Robert is correct that this is the only time both games from each LCS are played at the same time.

Just guessing, but it might be that anyone with access to Sportsnet East also has access to the a "local" FOX station, since Sportsnet would require cable. (The "basic" cable package in Ottawa includes Sportsnet but does not include the FOX station... both are included in Toronto... not sure how it is in the East)

Since Sportsnet doesn't seem to be able to replace the American feed of the same program as CTV would (I don't pretend to understand the CRTC rules on these kind of things), it's probably to their advantage to show the "alternate" game whenever possible, depending how many people watch which feed when the same game is on both.

(When Sportnet and FOX were carrying the same game simultaneously, I'd generally have the FOX feed on because I'm sick of repetition of the Sportsnet commercials -- they only seem to have about five. FOX is almost as bad, but I'll take the Eliza Dushku show ad over that CIBC "wedding" commerical anyday...)

Mmm. . . Eliza Dushku.

Now that's taken care of, can one of my fellow law school graduates on Da Box please provide a rant about the CRTC? It's been too long since I've seen a good send-up of that ridiculous institution, and I don't have the requisite topical info to infuse a rant with proper venom.

By the way, as someone who despises both the Red Sox and the Yankees, I just want to say that I hope that this series is a four-game sweep, every game being a massive, farcical blowout, and I don't give a toss who wins it. In the immortal words of Mercutio,

A POX ON BOTH YOUR HOUSES.

George,

As an employee of a cableco, I can shed a little light on the simulcast situation. Simulcast's only occur to protect a local station's advertising revenues. That is when your local CTV has the same program as say, NBC, they can request(no make that demand)the cable company simulcast the local signal over the American signal. Simulcast rules do not apply to Sportsnet as they are not a local station, they are considered a specialty station.

Also, simucast rules do not apply to digital channels, since the technology to do so would be highly oppresive to the cable company. Lastly, TSN occassionally gets a simulcast, but that is due to their special status as a "must carry" service. That is a special privelege conferred upon them when they first started operations to ensure they had sufficient revenues to survive the first few years of strong man competitions, dart matches, and the like.

Simulcasts drive cable companies nuts, because of the complaints they receive from their customers, especially around SuperBowl time. Everyone wants to see the latest Budweiser and Nike commercials.

Sportsnet Audience Relations replied to my e-mail of last night by saying that "Our understanding is that Fox Detroit will carry the Yanks/Red Sox". (In Ottawa, Rogers now carries Fox Detroit, not Buffalo any more.) This would surprise me, as Detroit is closer to Chicago, and most Fox stations are said to be carrying the Wrigley game. We'll find out for sure soon.

Just to avoid all confusion, I expect FOX to announce at 7:59 that they have decided to forgo the airing of all MLB playoff games for the rest of the 2003 season and instead have lined up 4 hours of Boston Public every night for the next 3 weeks.

Surprise, both Detroit and Seattle are carrying Red Sox/Yankees (contrary to what Fox's advertising last night led us to expect).

The San Francisco Bay Area, in case anyone is interested, also had the Sox/Yankees on Fox, with the Cubs/Marlins on FX.

Of course, I was watching Terminator II on Sci-Fi. No, wait: it was recall coverage on the Fox News Channel. My bad. But it was Fair and Balanced coverage, you can be assured of that!

Well on behalf of everyone at Da Box, I'd like to wish Gov. Wolfcastle all the best in straightening out the mess in California. Remember, Governor: the goggles do nothing.

Surprise, both Detroit and Seattle are carrying Red Sox/Yankees (contrary to what Fox's advertising last night led us to expect).

For some ridiculous reason, towns with American League teams insist on carrying AL games in the playoffs, even if the NL game is a better matchup or closer geographically.
_Matt - Friday, May 07 2004 @ 06:27 PM EDT (#67272) #
I think it makes sense to carry games related to what league the town one presides in is located to. The Blue Jays battled the sox and the yankees all year....
