Two weeks ago, I was downplaying a 12-0 sweep, in which several of the categories were decided by slim margins. Last week, I squeaked out a 7-4 decision that could have gone either way. Once again, I feel fortunate, as my Toronto Walrus remains in first place after a 10-2 victory over the Thunderbirds that doesn't reflect how close the match really was. A mere .008 of AVG, .011 of OBP and .09 in K/BB decided three "games" — I was relieved when it was over, as my hitters, who had been strong all week, collapsed with a 5/38 Sunday. But I'll take it.

Second place AGF is only two games back; their 9-3 win dropped hannibal’s cannibals from fifth to ninth in the standings. The rejuvenated Horse Field Hammers, led by Barry Bonds’ .714 OBP, edged last year’s champion Austin Senators 7-4 to hang on to third place. Billie’s Bashers got back into the thick of the race with an 11-1 drubbing of Jicks Rays, while the Eastern Shore Birds took over fifth by whipping Garces_not_on_roids 9-3. Baird Brain, my opponent this week, thrashed gashouse gorillas 9-2 and moved into the sixth spot.

The SABR Magicians enjoyed their best week yet, winning 10-2 over the slumping Reykjavik Fish Candy. I realize it's still early, and it only takes one or two good weeks in Head-to-Head play to turn things around, but the slow-starting teams must be getting nervous about relegation. The battle to avoid the cellar may be as intense and interesting as the one at the top this season.

The Alomar standings, through four of 22 weeks:

  # Team W-L-T WPct GB
1 Toronto Walrus 35-11-2 .750 --
2 AGF 32-12-4 .708 2

4 Billie's Bashers 31-16-1 .656 4.5
5 Eastern Shore Birds 30-17-1 .635 5.5

7 Mebion Glyndwr 26-21-1 .552 9.5
8 Chatsworth Halos 26-22-0 .542 10
9 hannibal's cannibals 25-21-2 .542 10

17 Red Mosquitos 18-28-2 .396 17
18 Reykjavik Fish Candy 13-33-2 .292 22
19 Garces_not_on_roids 12-36-0 .250 24
20 Jick's Rays 9-39-0 .188 27

My weekly MVP is a tough call; Matt Lawton had 10 singles in 21 AB, which helps the old AVG and OBP, but my entire pitching staff deserves praise, combining for a 1.74 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 6 wins and 4 saves. LVP was Julio Mateo, who paid for his ineffectiveness with his job. I’m also concerned about Marlon Byrd, mired in a month-long slump and a permanent resident of Larry Bowa’s doghouse -- which is cause and which is effect, I'm not entirely sure, but the waiver papers are signed and sitting by the fax machine.

[whine]Nobody wants to trade with me[/whine] — I'd move a speedy OF and a pitcher for an OF with more pop, if anyone is interested.

Poor management- Up by a point in OB% Sunday night, I sent Laird and Bellhorn out to try and overcome a 2 RBI deficit. They went 0-5 with a walk, and I lost OB% by a point. Otherwise, my hitting was mediocre- .260/.350/.395- a power drought that made up for my early season hot streak. To give an idea how feeble my hitters were, 7 of them had higher OB% than SLG...

Some things are luck- JT Snow contributed 2 of AGF's 5 steals, and my guys stayed still.

My pitching, which I thought would be weak, was actually pretty good. I'm hoarding a couple of "NA"s in Claussen and Soriano, so my IP totals are going to suffer, but only a ludicrous 19 K:BB ratio from AGF's Unit kept me from taking rate stats.

BONDS goes to Beltre. Decent, but not amazing .385/.385/.731, 4 R 7 RBI.

NEFI- Lots of competition here. Phelps takes it because he's a Jay, so his continued suckitude hurts both spheres of my baseball life. .179/.258/.214 2 R 3 RBI.

PEDRO- Brandon Webb and Tom Glavine split the award. Webb 13.2 IP, a gem yesterday that the pen blew, so only gets 1 win, but 1.33/.88/2.25. Glavine 2 W, 3.75/1.42, but a very un-Glaivinelike 4.50. Can we call Glavine this year's Loaiza...?

I notched 7 W, which is pretty damn good IMO since I'm short 2 pitchers, but didn't get any saves. AGF had 6, including 4 from Rivera, which sucks because it means the Yankees are going well. My team's inching back toward .500, and I don't like that. Gashouse this week will tell a lot- if my hitting rebounds, then it'll be a .500 week given the strength of his pitching.

Just a painful week all around. The Gorillas fall to .500 for the first time in team history and now have to face a Cannibals team that has several former Gorrilas on the roster.

Jurgen's Brain swept me offensively with little resistance. My line of 29R 22RBI 3SB .253/.315/.391 doesn't exactly put the fear of God in you. Hesitantly, I'll give my Barry to Rocco Baldelli. No one else got more than his 4RBI and his 320/320/560 line is the best he's put up all year. I think you have to have at least 15 at bats to qualify for any of these, so it will be easier to just name the guys who don't get Neifi's: Mike Young, Lew Ford, Luis Matos. That is all.

Although I got another 7 scoreless innings from my bullpen triumvirate, I'll give a Pedro to Jason Johnson for his great no-win against Seattle. I picked up Jose Lima because he was pitching against Montreal, but even he didn't get roughed up as much as Dontrelle in San Francisco to the tune of 6 runs per three outs. Sorry Jose, Big Willie gets the Lima.

BARRY: Crawford .370/.370/.593, 5 r, 4 rbi, 3 sb

Although I was tempted to give this to Giambi (.450/.560/.800) I found it hard to pass up a guy whose steals were enough to win me that category on his own. Crawford was the only early pick I made in the draft (my third pick) that I had doubts about because of his potentially empty rate stats. But his tools as a hitter and very young age indicated the potential for significant improvement and thus far he hasn't disappointed. If he stole 55 bases with an OBP barely over .300 then he should be able to do better this year.

PEDRO: Mussina 13 ip, 1 w, 4.15 era, 1.46 whip, 9 k/bb

Still not the ace that I traded for but he's getting there. He is the key to my bargain basement starting rotation strategy working and the fact that he seems to finally be rounding into shape bodes well. He won for only the second time this year but his Sunday start was enough to give me the edge in innings for the week and I'll take that K/BB every week thank you.

NEIFI: Dye .217/.308/.304, 3 r, 2 rbi

Coinciding with the Athletics' losing streak, Dye cooled down from his hot start. It's easy to forgive him when the rest of the offence more than picked up the slack.

LIMA: Biddle 31.50 era, 4.00 whip, 0.00 k/bb

When you draft the Rocky Biddles of the world you take the good with the horrible. Fortunately, it didn't cost me this week as the only pitching stat I lost was wins.

The Bashers and SABR Magicians are on the verge of completing a very significant deal which will move Gary Sheffield and young thirdbaseman Chad Tracy for speed burner Pierre and rehabbing power arm Mark Prior. Trading my best hitter for an unhealthy starter is a huge risk so a marketable commodity like Pierre was necessary to mitigate that risk. But there's no question that I needed help in the rotation and if Prior comes back like I think he should then he should join with Mussina to give me solid anchors for innings, whip, and K/BB.
_AGF - Monday, May 03 2004 @ 11:42 AM EDT (#68075) #
Some things are luck- JT Snow contributed 2 of AGF's 5 steals, and my guys stayed still.

This is nothin compared to week one when I won the steals 1-0 with 1 steal from Ellis Burks!

I still do not understand how I can compete with my current offense, although pitching was the weaker side this week even with great performances Randy and Rivera.

Bonds Hideki Matsui: 10R, 5RBI, .400/.500/.600

Pedro Randy finally lived up to his high pick last year: 2W, 0.75 ERA, 0.58 WHIP, 19 K/BB

Neifi Patterson choked with 3R,1 RBI, .143/.182/.190

Lima Definite award time for Jim Mecir. My "closer-in-waiting" pick up managed to allow 5 runs in NY without an out and 4 in Tampa in one inning. Result: 81 ERA, 9 WHIP, and a bunch of walks ie. 0 K/BB

BTW Lieber has arrived leaving me with a bunch of pitching especially if Randy is Randy. I am looking for RBI guys if you are interested. And Koch got 2 Saves and he is still available in a trade...

The Elitists were lucky enough to hold on for a 6-6 draw with Freddy Beach Fracas, desparately surviving through a Sunday of nervousness.

Sitting one game above .500 is not ideal, but I'll take it.

Bonds Three words, Hee Seop Choi. He's been proping up my SLG all season, put up a line of 5/17, with 6 runs, 9 rbi and .294/.455/1.000!

Neifi Belongs to the one and only Jermaine Dye, who has returned to the spectacular form everyone grew to love last year. Lines of .217/.308/.304 just don't cut it for a corner outfielder.

Pedro Goes to Pedro's soon to be teammate in 2005, Javier Vazquez. Javi only got a single start last week, but went 8 IP, 1 W, with an ERA of 2.25, a miniscule WHIP of 0.25, with 5 Ks to 0 BBs. If not for Ken Harvey, that line would've been even more impressive.

Lima The Elitists bullpen obviously aren't holding their standards high enough, with Leskanic, Quantrill, and Hasegawa all putting in poor performances, especially the first two in NYY's Saturday demolition of KC 12-4. It's not fun watching your K/BB go from +2.50 to 1.69 on the back of 2 relief pitchers!

The Elitists hope to regain a bit of pride facing TMG Eh's this week, hoping the plethora of 1B and 3B he's assembled can just keep hitting homers and everything else works itself out.

Another good week with the bats led to a nice win, 10-2.

Bonds - Jason Veritek led the way with .500/.533/1.143 and 4/8/0.

Pedro - We'll give it to Pettitte for 6 scoreless innings, getting the win in his first start back. Honorable mention to Matt Morris would pitched great yesterday.

Neifi - A good week top to bottom. Griffey gets it this week with a .222/.300/.333 week. At least he's in the lineup.

LIMA - A close call between Mantei and Mateo. Mateo was slightly worse, but Mantei is blowing saves. The vote goes to Mateo since Mantei got the only save of the week in my matchup.

This week the Pistol Nine face off against 1st place Ghost Man on Third and his plethora of top starters. It'll be good to see how we match up with the best team in the league.

Just as a 'something to think about down the road' suggestion:

If there's 6 teams in the playoffs, that goes down to 4 teams before getting down to one, why not have 4 teams 'promoted' to Alomar instead of 3.

That way the top 2 in the regular season are locks to make it, and the winners of the 'wild card' rounds make it as well. As it is you could have the best team and not get called up if you have one losing week.

I refuse to disclose my pathetic record. Let's just say I have 3 losses for each win. :)

Bonds: Godzilla, 10 runs, .400/.500/.600
Neifi: the normally consistent Joe Randa .188/.250/.188
Pedro: Rueter yet again with an ERA on the sad side of 10.
Lima: Wayne Franklin, despite pitching only 3.2 innings.

And now, the First Monthly Mark Prior Watch:

That concludes the First Monthly Mark Prior Watch.

The walking wounded Moscow Rats notched their first victory of the season, 8-3 over the Red Mosquitos. A solid all-round effort offensively coupled with a lot of pitching strikeouts propelled the Rats to victory. The week 4 awards:

MVH: A very tough call, given that noone really stood out. I'm going to give it to Frank Catalanotto, who hit a nifty .400/.500/.542 while racking up 3 runs and 3 RBI.

LVH: Wil Cordero, dragged in as a stopgap for the injured Richie Sexson, managed a .167/.167/.333 line, scoring one run.

MVP: Brad Radke's 14 innings of 2.57 ERA ball were a key to my victories in the pitching rate stats, as were his 1.21 WHIP and 3.5 K/BB ratio.

LVP: Zach Day's had better weeks. Like last week, for instance. Going from the top to the bottom, Day managed five and two thirds innings, with an ERA over nine.

In other news, the Rats completed their nine-millionth trade with the aforementioned Mosquitos; as in roughly half of those previous trades, Ray Durham is changing hands. Leaving with him on the Wednesday flight from Scheremetyevo Airport are erstwhile Rats closer Octavio Dotel and Luis Castillo, coming in from the Mosquitos are Derrek Lee and Brian Roberts.

The Vancouver Cyphers were reasonably happy to escape with 4 points this past week, as we "enjoy" noting that 6 valued members of the Cyphers roster were on the DL.

With a heavy heart the Cyphers brain trust also made a difficult decision to part with Edgar Renteria in trade to bolster the team's beleaguered pitching staff.

"While it was extraordinarily difficult to part with Edgar, who is a tremendous player, management feels that our middle infield depth is sufficient to make this trade a win-win proposition for both sides. Adam Everett is a solid player who will help make up for the absence of Renteria, and Tim Hudson is the ace our pitching staff desperately needed", said the Cyphers GM at the press conference announcing the trade.

In the twilight zone that is Barfield:

Submitted for your consideration, one 4th place Edmonton Decepticons squad. Given the unenviable task of taking on league leading Team Junior Felix, the Decepticons pull off a dramatic 7-4-1 victory. The victory is all the more unlikely as Decepticon Richie Sexson joins Jose Reyes and Jason Bay on the DL early in the week while the pitching staff turns in its 3rd week of +5 era.

As the Decepticons celebrate their unlikely victory, the manager glances over to the overall team standings. After taking down the league leaders where do the triumphant and formerly 4th place Decepticons now reside? 5th place.

Tune in next week and see whether the Decepticons can escape...the twilight zone.

Bonds: I must truly be in the twilight zone when waiver wire pickup Juan Uribe collects the Bonds award with a .522/.577/.870 week.
Neifi: While this award should go to David DeJesus, I'm going to be lenient because he's just a rookie. The Neifi this week goes to Decepticon albatross Bobby Higginson whose .182/.240/.227 line is absolutely putrid.
Pedro: More proof of me in the twilight zone. This week's Pedro goes to Billy Koch who put together an un-Koch-like 0.00/0.75/3.00 week and gave the Decepticons 2 saves.
Lima: Sidney Ponson. The big Ponce was shelled in 3 innings of work in his only start contributing a 14.73 ERA to the Decepticons cause. The number of candidates for the Lima was tremendous however. So much so that the Edmonton Decepticons are considering calling up a young kid named Megatron from the farm. Scouts say he has a cannon for an arm...
_Donkit R.K. - Monday, May 03 2004 @ 04:28 PM EDT (#68085) #
I'll stick to the Most Valuables today...

BONDS - Surprise! Who could it be besides Jim Thome? Once again, one of my catchers contends though (Miguel Olivo). Thome's final line was 4/6/0/.364/.481/.682

PEDRO - I'll split the Pedro this time around between El Artista and Eric Hinske's 2002 nemesis.

Miguel Batista - 15.0/0/0/3.00/1.07/1.40
Rodrigo Lopez - 7/0/0/1.29/.43/5.00

As detailed on the Barfield message board, my overmanaging might have killed me. I sat Santana *and* Dickey (and let Hudson pitch though that's usually a no-brainer) yesterday with a commanding lead in IP. I nominate this for worst...move...ever!
