All of the awards are out now.  From MVP (at last) Mike Trout to the managers of the year.  How did the Jays do? Not so good, but no shock although some surprises.

Results with Blue Jays and other notables...

Bautista's 6th place finish was the best result a Jay has had since 2011 when he finished 3rd (4th in 2010).  Cito Gaston in 2010 was the last Blue Jay other than Bautista to make a top 5 (5th in Manager voting).  Halladay's 5th in Cy voting in 2009 the last player to make a top 5.

No Gold Gloves this year.  Dickey got one last year.  No Jays catcher ever has won, no Jays 1B (although Olerud won 3 times in Seattle), Hudson in 2005 won at 2B, Gruber in 1990 at 3B, Fernandez in 1986-1989 at SS, Wells in the OF (2004-2006), Green in 1999, White in 1991-1995 (plus 2 pre-Jays) to give you a full outfield.   Others to get GG's include Barfield in RF twice, and  Alomar at 2B all 5 years he was here.

Silver Slugger was given out to Bautista in the OF.  Other times at each position here are CA: none, 1B: Delgado (2003/2000/1999), McGriff 1989, 2B: Hill 2009, Alomar 1992, Garcia 1982, 3B: Gruber 1990, SS: none, OF: Bautista (2014/2011/2010), Wells 2003, Green 1999, Carter 1992/1991, Bell 1985-1987, Barfield 1986, Moseby 1983, DH: Lind 2009, Canseco 1998, Molitor 1993, Winfield 1992.

A bit surprised Fernandez never won the silver slugger at SS - he had tons of offensive value, but I guess that was back in the day when not too many people recognized what offensive value actually meant.  Not enough RBIs?

Big problem for Fernandez was having Trammell and Ripken at SS at the same time in the same league (heck, same division).  Golden Age for SS in the 80's with those 3, Yount in early 80's, and Ozzie Smith in the NL.  Want speed/defense? Smith or Fernandez.  Want power? Trammell or Ripken.  Nice mix.  Hurt when Fernandez was traded, was excited when he came back, then disappointed when his agent gave him poor advise and he ended up leaving.

Great point John, I'd forgotten how stacked SS was back in the day.

I loved Fernandez as a young fan - my favourite along with Stieb.  I loved that crazy batting stance and all those triples, and I still have dreadfully vivid memories of that pitch he took to the face.

I hadn't realized he had poor advice from his agent about coming back - what was the story?

As I recall his agent told him he could get more than the 2 year deal the Jays offered but instead he went unsigned into spring (rules at the time prohibited the Jays from resigning him post Jan 8th) and had to settle for a 1 year deal to play 3B in Cincinnati.
