In The Neyer/James Guide to Pitchers Bill James introduced a formula designed to pick the Cy Young award winner (not it should be noted necessarily the best pitcher in the league, but, the pitcher most likely to be thought the best by the Cy Young voters).

The formula is:
wins times 6
minus losses times 2
plus strikeouts divided by 12
plus saves times 2.5
plus shutouts
plus runs saved
plus 12 points for pitching for a division winner

(Runs Saved James calculates as ((5-era)/9)*innings pitched)

James claims 'the system picks the actual winner of the Cy Young award more than 80 percent of the time, and often picks the top finishers in something near their voter order'.

Here are the year-to-date leaders in both leagues:

Closers to win both Cy Youngs ?

(notes: I awarded the 12 points as division winners to members of the Yankees, Twins, As, Braves, Cardinals and Dodgers - as they are the current division leaders.
Stats were taken before Saturdays games from dougstats.com.)

Gwyn, I think you're missing something for saves in the formula. It also says "shoutouts" rather than "shutouts".

Anyways, Gagne looks to me like a winner. As for Rivera, we'll wait and see. I imagine that he's going to be used less the rest of the season, and if Mulder ends up with 21-22 wins and an ERA in the low 3s on a division winner, he'll probably win.

thanks Mike, things are now correct.

Will Gange win it? His streak was snapped and a decent amount of (for lack of better word) controversy over the relevance of the Save statistic. Maybe BWAA has awoken from their slumber? (I know I'm dreaming :-p)

I suppose there haven't been any other standout candidates from the NL and the Dodgers are leading their division in large part because their opposition only gets 24 outs per game so Gange is just as well deserving.

You're tough.

Schmidt's been great, and Clemens and Johnson aren't far behind. All have ERAs under 3. And while he's not on the list Sheets has been outstanding as well.

You're right about Clemens and Schmidt. I still can't get my memory to accept Clemens in the NL. If he holds up down the stretch, he'll probably end up with another Cy.

Sheets ranked 17th by James metric in the NL. His era(.265) and strikeouts (171) are excellent but his record is only 9 - 8.

I think the thing missing from the formula is "overblown massive media attention." Gagne's save "streak" will win him the award, especially if LA wins the division.

Rivera, I just don't see it. He's had some very public Bad Closer Moments. Nathan is terrific but will split votes with Santana, especially if Santana keeps pitching like he did yesterday against Hudson. My money is on Mulder; I think another piece of the formula should consider the consistency with which voters give credit for past wins of the Cy Young Award!

But Mulder never won one. All I see on B-Ref is a second place finish in 2001.
