Getting up to splash my face
Wanting just to stay awake
Wondering how much I can take

  1. Short recap: Yankees 7 - Blue Jays 4. Homeruns by Delgado (21st) and Hudson (10th). Bush gave up 4 runs (3 earned) over 5.2 innings allowing 7 hits, 2 walks, but no homeruns and 4 strikeouts. Frasor imploded in the 9th giving up 3 runs. For the Yanks Kenny Lofton went 3 for 4.

    Longer recaps:

  2. Fordin Notes on Cat's surgery, Vernon's injury and Hinske's glove:

This year, Hinske's healthy and he's finally seeing the results of countless hours spent on his defense. In fact, his career's done a 180-degree turn. When Hinske came up, he was an offensive player carrying a suspect glove. Now he's an impact defender with a limp bat.

Hinske has hit just .219 since the All-Star break, but his defense has kept him busy. He's played in 38 of Toronto's last 39 games, so the Jays recently schemed a way to keep him fresh. Toronto manager John Gibbons penciled him in as the designated hitter in Thursday night's game, giving him a chance to rest his legs.

Only .219 since the All-Star break? Ouch.

  3. Rutsey Notes on pitchers Douglass, Maurer, and Lilly. Lilly has quietly put up some impressive numbers this season:

He ranks sixth overall in ERA at 3.66 and while pitching in night games, he leads the American League with a 2.89 ERA. His road ERA of 3.53 is also seventh best in the league.

With 138 strikeouts, Lilly sits sixth in the league while his opponents' batting average against him of .225 is second best in the league.

If Lilly can keep this up and Doc is healthy next year, the Jays are going to have a terrific 1-2 punch in the rotation.

  4. Jeff Blair's piece "Jays smooth a path for rookie Crozier" indicates the Jays are going to give Eric Crozier as many at-bats as possible in September:

What he didn't say was that with Delgado on the verge of free agency, Crozier's development is a priority. Since the trade, Crozier has hit .294 in 18 games with the Triple-A Syracuse SkyChiefs, with one home run and 13 runs batted in. Overall, he has 21 homers, 66 RBIs and a .297 average.

They need to see what he can do because even if Delgado does leave as a free agent, the Blue Jays privately expect their payroll to increase no more than $3-million (U.S.) to about $53-million. They'll save on Delgado's $18.75-million, but they'll also have to pay other players due raises while adding at least one more front-line pitcher and at least two everyday bats.

Has anyone else heard of this possible increase in payroll to $53 million? I believe this is the first I've heard of it.

  5. Speaking of the payroll Richard Griffin has a few things to say in his article "Less whining, more money please":

Then again, what do we know? Saving money has always seemed more of a priority for the Rogers Blue Jays than spending it to build a winner. Think about recent ownership posturing. The Jays invariably play the guilt card, placing the onus on the fans to show they deserve a winner by coming to more games.

The pretzel logic goes that by buying tickets in advance of results, management will be able to lure prime free-agent talent here to compete with the Yanks and Sox. It's totally illogical.

In what other product-driven enterprise is that marketing strategy used? Has Labatt ever said, "Hey, we know our Blue isn't tasting very good this year. But, if you promise to drink more of it, we promise we will make it taste better later"?

I don't recall anyone in the Jays ownership ever saying that if fans come out to see the Jays now, Rogers will increase the payroll in the future. Even still, this is a must read article.

  6. Tonight's 7:05PM EST game at the Skydome should be a quiet affair if Dome security has anything to say about it. The 9-7 unmentionable E------ L----- faces the 2-2 Justin Miller. As always, Spencer Fordin has a game preview.

My two cents: I'm not sure who exactly made the decision to silence the O-Drum but from where I sit the decision was an asinine one. I watched the first four innings on TV last night and we could quite clearly hear the drum as well as some of the chants (OVER-RATED). The Dome sounded like a great place to be. The atmosphere you guys provided was picked up viewers and made a much better advertisement for going to a game than commericals where a guy trades his girlfriend to a scalper for a $9 ticket. Between the cancellation of the Starpass and this fans seem to be told that they're not really wanted at the Skydome. A last place team should be giving people a reason to come to the park, not a reason to stay away.

Off-Topic Friday: Yesterday I made the off-hand comment that Temple of the Dog's self-titled album was one of the four or five best of the 90's. I thought about it later and it probably is one of the albums I've enjoyed most from that period. The only other ones that might possibly top it for me is Pearl Jam's "Ten", Cake's "Fashion Nugget", Radiohead's "OK Computer", and The New Radical's "Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too".

What are your five favourite albums from the 90's?

No, wait! I'm sure if J.P. had $180 million to spend on payroll, his 25 man roster would have won last night's game 6 to 4.

Now if only that was clever...
_Moffatt - Friday, August 27 2004 @ 10:25 AM EDT (#21988) #
Wow.. someone likes their Nirvana. :)

No points for Rob C due to the lack of cleverness, but he did get the song right, so he wins a picture of a bobtail squid:

I kind of agree with Griffin. I think that the payroll is a problem, but I don't like hearing them bitch about it all the time.

Nirvana - Unplugged
Pearl Jam - Live on Two Legs
Weezer - Blue Album
Eminem - Slim Shady LP

I'm grasping at straws for a fifth.. maybe The Chronic or the White Stripers or Nevermind or Ten or Okay Computer.

LOL. I was thinking the same thing. I've got a few bucks in my pocket and I haven't been to the used CD store in awhile...
_Ryan Day - Friday, August 27 2004 @ 10:31 AM EDT (#21992) #
I think Fordin (and the Jays) may be just a wee bit too enthusiastic about Hinske's defence. He's turned into what I thought he could be: A decent third baseman. A gold glove is kind of silly with Chavez and A-Rod in the league, but he's not hurting the team... with his glove, anyway.

More importantly:

Radiohead: The Bends
Pulp: Different Class
Massive Attack: Mezzanine
Blur: Parklife
My Bloody Valentine: Loveless
(list subject to change every five minutes)
_Max Parkinson - Friday, August 27 2004 @ 10:34 AM EDT (#21993) #
1. My Bloody Valentine - Loveless

(pretty big gap)

2. Radiohead - OK Computer
3. Ride - Going Blank Again
4. Verve - Urban Hymns
5. Massive Attack - Mezzanine (pretty sure it was '99)

But who am I kidding, ask me tomorrow and you could get a different 2-40.

What a difference a quick fuss makes!

The O-Drum is unsilenced. Check the thread.

My top five:

Crowded House - Woodface
Tin Machine - Tin Machine
Living Colour - Stain
Peter Gabriel - Us
Lyle Lovett - I Love Everybody (I'd select ...and his large band, but it's from '89. Honorable mentions to the rest of his '90s output, which was superb. If I had to pick one song it would be Church off of Joshua Judges Ruth)

While you'll get no argument from me that David Bowie rocks the free world, I'm surprised anybody else would consider putting this album on their list (it'd easily make my top 20).

The 90s? Other than those mentioned...

Digable Planets -- Reachin' (A New Definition of Time and Space)
Stone Temple Pilots -- Purple
Sloan came out with five albums in the '90s, four of which were superb: Twice Removed, One Chord To Another, Navy Blues, Between The Bridges
Beck -- Odelay! and Midnite Vultures
Jamiroquai -- Traveling Without Moving and Synkronized

OK. Now you're making me think to get it down to 5. In no particular order:

Matthew Sweet - Girlfriend
Rush - Counterparts
Tragically Hip - Fully Completely
Pearl Jam - Ten
Live - Throwing Copper

Though I don't think it would kick out any of the above five, and it probably doesn't even count as a 90's album, but if you're looking for a great 90's complilation, the first Big Shiny 90's kicks major A**. I'd consider it the A-Rod of compilation albums...

Have you ever considered building your own TiVO?

yup. I used to own a tivo hacked to work in Canada, then I got frustated with all the things it couldn't do and I moved on to building an HTPC. It's pretty straightforward if you're reasonably computer savvy. There are great apps for windows and linux. You could get a windows version of one of these running in a few hours and the only special hardware you need is a good TV capture card.

1. Pet Shop Boys - Very/Relentless
2. Dr. Dre - The Chronic
3. Oasis - Definately Maybe (with b-sides)
4. David Bowie - Outside
5. Supergrass - In It for The Money

I want to put Scritti Politti - Anomie & Bonhomie on this list, it came out in 1999 but I've only really discovered it over the past few years. I think it would be a Moffatt favourite.

Keith. I have Supergrass' Life on Other Planets which is a great album. How does In It For the Money compare musically?
_Keith Talent - Friday, August 27 2004 @ 12:55 PM EDT (#22022) #
"Life on Other Planets", IMO is a complete disappointment compared to "In It For the Money". "Life on Planets" to me sounds like they're going through the motions, contrived. Go get "Money", it's twice, three times as genuine.

I'm not interested in building my own TiVo or hacking one to work in Canada for the same reason I don't really feel like building my own computers anymore: I have better things to do with my time. Plus, it's a ton cheaper for me to pay $23 a month to Rogers than to buy a pretty powerful computer that'll be able to do the MythTV thing.

(I ran MythTV on my personal machine for a while, but I was turned off it because a) my machine could barely record just the one channel at a time I threw at it and b) the author basically told me "fix it yourself" when I reported bugs.)
_Keith Talent - Friday, August 27 2004 @ 12:57 PM EDT (#22024) #
You should also check out their debut album "I Should Coco". That's what started it all. It's a rather juvenile work but tons of fun. "Money" is their mature masterpiece. "Planets" is, well, their geriatric album. I wonder if we'll ever see another album? Supergrass is a group that doesn't age well I find.

You guys have covered all my favorites, surprisingly including Supergrass' 'In If for the Money' and Pulp's 'Different Class.'

MatO, In It for the Money is the best Supergrass album there is. It's too bad that because I Should Coco was so gimmicky that Supergrass is never appreciated as a great band. They've just put out their 'Supergrass is 10' best of album. I'm blown away with how good the entire album is. For my money, Supergrass is the most underrated band out there.

If you asked this me DURING the 90's, I'd probably have answered differently:

Pearl Jam - Yield (with props to Leigh for touting No Code...widely underrated)
Weezer - Blue Album
Soul Coughing - Ruby Vroom
Soundgarden - SuperUnknown
STP - Purple

Pixies - Surfer Rosa would have made it for me, but that was the late 80's. Fully Completely is right up there, as it should be for anybody sneaking underage into small town bars in and around 1994. The patriotic side of me also needs to bring up Five Days in July by Blue Rodeo. My other side agrees with the nomination.

My taste for rock that rocks as hard as much of the above left me when the decade rolled over (The White Stripes excepted) but these are still my faves, somewhat out of nostalgia I'm sure.

Ignoring your jibe at Moseley Shoals, I will tackle a couple of the names on your list as best as I can.

I've never had any time for Bjork. She makes my ears bleed.

Manic Street Preachers, what a mess. Their stuff with Richey James is very difficult listening. I don't really understand the fuss, and having heard it live, it doesn't improve. Their first records after he disappeared though, Everything Must Go, and This is My Truth, Tell Me Yours are quite extraordinary. Their last record, Know Your Enemy, is absolutely turgid. But that was a record of the 00's, so I don't know if you can include this in a review of them as a 90s act.

Off topic but anyway...

I was waiting to cross the street at the Front and University intersection going to Subway for lunch.. as I see the walk signal and look up, who do I see? None other than JP, in sunglasses sporting a nifty pink shirt, running towards me seeming like he was in a rush.. all I could muster up was 'JP!' as we crossed paths he said "Hey hows it going" and kept jogging he crossed the street and continued on along Front. My brother and I then discussed the fact he was out in public like that, which athletes we've seen in public in the past, how many people do you think would notice him etc... anyway, just thought I'd share with what is likely the highest percentage group of people (100%?) that would in fact notice him.

When I was 13 down in Seattle to see the Blue Jays, in their powder blues, manhandle the Mariners I saw Lloyd Moseby walking to the ballpark, lollygagging and whistling, he seemed to be in an extraordinary mood. I was too shy to say anything.

If you think SkyDome is bad with people cheering for the visitors, and catering to out-of-town fans, you should have seen the Kingdome in those days. When the Blue Jays came to Seattle attendance would shoot from the normal 6,000 to up to 40,000. The Mariners embraced this and tried to schedule the Blue Jays for weekends, calling it "Canada Weekend" and even accepting Canadian money at par in the Kingdome. It was all very surreal.

In Flames - "Colony"

Good grief! Someone else listens to In Flames? That whole Gothenburg scene is quite impressive, in my opinion.

Mike, good call on Rage, I can't believe I forgot them.

and by the way.. something like this I suppose

Nas - Illmatic
Snoop - Doggystyle
Dre - The Chronic

After that I can list off about 20 albums around a similar level of excellence to fill out my top 5 out of the greatest era in hiphop (before it was popular to like it, and by no coincidence, and by no coincidence before it went to die a slow painful death)
_RhyZa - Friday, August 27 2004 @ 03:28 PM EDT (#22054) #
*err.. and that repetition was no coincidence, or writing technique.. just a good old fashioned typo of the extended variety. ; )

That was pretty funny. The girl dropping the ice cream and starting to cry made me laugh out loud.

Cheer Club vs. Yankees Part II: Bang the Drum Slowly...

Heh, more like Cheer Club vs. Yankees part II: Esteban Gets The Horns.

We'll make sure to tell the closest Yankee that Esteban should thank Lieber for this.

I thought we were talking about records of the 90s, not 1979-1986! :)

hah I'm sure the argument can be made, and extending that to a few more years up to about '89 but in my mind (albeit a relatively young, sheltered one to the old school) '92-96 is the era of greatness which I speak of.
_bmy - Friday, August 27 2004 @ 04:04 PM EDT (#22061) #
I agree with RhyZa. I'm still fairly young myself... but definitely there was some greatness in the early-mid 90's... before Puff Daddy and Mase and all that crap brought the popularity a.k.a. demise of Hip Hop.

Other good 90's Hip Hop Albums/Groups:

Outkast - Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, ATLiens
The Roots - Do you want more?!?!, The Illadelph Halflife
The Dream Warriors
De La Soul
The Pharcyde
Brand Nubian
The Beatnuts

"mainstream" popularity, that is

You guys must be real young to not remember the "mainstream" popularity of Run DMC, LL Cool J, Ice T, NWA, Public Enemy and the immortals DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock, Tone Loc, Young MC and the like!

Those were hard times back in junior high for guys like me trying to rock out to Cinderella, Skid Row, Warrant and Poison for all the rap we had to put up with from our friends!

TLC - Crazysexycool was a groundbreaking album. A lot of performers today owe their careers to it.

Hip Hop: The Jurassic Five is a good contemporary rap group, who don't feel the need for violent lyrics or to wax materialism. Outkast is always welcome to my ears.

Geez, if you say "mainstream" and "rap" together, all I think of is Run DMC, LL Cool J, Ice T, NWA, Public Enemy, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock, Tone Loc, and Young MC.

Oh, and MC Miker G and DJ Sven.

"Good grief! Someone else listens to In Flames? That whole Gothenburg scene is quite impressive, in my opinion."

I agree with you in full there. I love most anything by In Flames, Arch Enemy, Dream Evil And Nocturnal Rites.. If you haven't checked any of those guys out I think you'd be impressed with them too.

"Mike, good call on Rage, I can't believe I forgot them.
Their first album is first on my list."

Actually the first album is probably my favorite too but I was listening to "Revolver" from Evil Empire so I put that down figuring most people wouldn't notice.

Glad to see i'm not the only one who has a bit different taste in music.

Sweet, glad to hear I'm not the only one to listen to In Flames...they are amazing.

Two other amazing heavy bands are Into Eternity and Immortal Souls (similar to In Flames). Into Eternity is actually from Regina; maybe thats why they're so good-there is nothing else to do there.

On the topic of In Flames, the best "metal" albumn (I have no idea how to classify it) I've heard in years is the new Unearth album. Holy geez.

Honestly, it's so good, I'm going to burn a couple right now. Anyone who's going to the game tonight is welcome to have a copy. If you like it, buy it. If not, toss. If you are indifferent, well, buy it anyways.

Can't not play this game.

Guided By Voices - Alien Lanes
Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One
Mercury Rev - Boces
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Autechre - Tri Repetae

Notes on previous posts:

The Stone Roses/The Stone Roses is IMHO one of the best pop albums of all time but was released in '89 and does not qualify.

I prefer "I Should Coco" over "In it for the Money" but that's just me.

Although it isn't my absolute favourite, if I had to nominate one "must hear" album for the decade it would be Loveless. Amazing stuff.

Is this place turning into Primer?
_mathesond - Friday, August 27 2004 @ 06:19 PM EDT (#22078) #
Almost forgot -well, I did, and jsut remembered - "Shakespeare My Butt" by The Lowest Of The Low

Funny, I never knew anyone who owned, or had even heard of, Loveless back when I was listening to it most every night. Must have been hangin' with the wrong crowd :)

Oh, let's see:

Son Volt - Trace
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Spiritualized - Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space
Sugar - Copper Blue
Sleater-Kinney - Dig Me Out
Guided By Voices - Bee Thousand
Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin
Built To Spill - Perfect From Now On
Uncle Tupelo - Anodyne
Swervedriver - Mezcal Head

I could list a jillion...
_Obo - Friday, August 27 2004 @ 06:52 PM EDT (#22080) #
Oh yeah? Oh yeah? Well I could list at least _two_ jillion, but the original question asked for five.

Nice to see another GBV listed.

OK, here's my five from the 90s. (Jaguares is a Mexican band. They're living gods down there, but they're not too well known outside the Spanish speaking world. Everybody else is pretty famous.)

Jaguares - El Equilibrio de los Jaguares

U2 - Achtung Baby

Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie

Richard Thompson - Mock Tudor

Mary Chapin Carpenter - Come On Come On

Hey guys, I'm a Red Sox fan and I just stumbled onto the site.

So do the Yankees suck or what?

I made my list and only then did I start looking through everyone else's. I don't want to retract anything, but some very loud honourable mentions to Pearl Jam, Radiohead, the Tragically Hip, Whiskeytown, and Uncle Tupelo (and their descendants).

And ya know, Van Morrison singing the phone book works for me...

What this thread has done to me is make me wish "Mass Romantic" and "Welcome Interstate Managers" were released in the '90's.

And ya know, Van Morrison singing the phone book works for me...

Heh, yeah, but was any of his '90s output as memorable as what came before? Almost all of it had four or five moments of total brilliance and then half a dozen filler songs. Notable exception: A Night In San Fransico. Hrm, maybe I'll put that in my top five. The Healing Game is such a near miss. I think it was his best work of the decade, though, and it's an album I love.
