Scranton WB at Syracuse - Postponed

New Hampshire at Connecticut - Postponed

Sarasota 5 at Dunedin 3

Coming into last night's game Brandon Magee had given up 10 earned runs in 2 innnings.  Last night was a big improvement.  Magee gave up 2 runs (1 earned) in 4 innings on 5 hits and two walks.  He struck out 1 and had 7 ground outs to 4 fly outs.

Jacob Butler is off to a fast start this year.  He got a brief trial in Dunedin last year and had a .482 OPS in 55 ABs.  This year he's currently has an 1.031 OPS over his first 11 games.  Last night he had two singles in four ABs.

Cory Patton also had two hits, and two RBIs, for the D-Jays including a double.  Anthony Hatch had 2 hits and a walk.

Kane County 6 at Lansing 7

Lansing scored all 7 runs in the 5th inning and that held up for the win.  Here's how the inning went:

    * Sean Shoffit grounds out
    * Matthew Liuzza triples
    * Jonathan Jaspe singles
    * Matthew Lane singles
    * Jonathan Diaz walks.
    * Scott Campbell doubles
    * Yuber Rodriguez doubles
    * Travis Snider doubles
    * Brian Pettway singles
    * Sean Shoffit strikes out swinging
    * Matthew Liuzza flies out

Shoffit made two outs in the same inning.  Does that mean he has to buy a round for the team?

On the mound, my man Kyle Ginley made the start.  The 20 year old didn't fare as well as his first start of the year, as he gave up 2 runs in 3.2 innings last night.  He struck out 4 and walked 2 while giving up 5 hits.

3 Starts!
3 - Anthony Hatch
2 - Matthew Liuzza
1 - Cory Patton

Just checked the IL standings and noticed a spread in Syracuse's division between 5 games played and 11 games played. Ouch. I wonder if the Jays ever thought about going the Leafs route and having the AAA team play in Toronto instead, perhaps doing double headers with the big team as a way of rewarding/drawing in fans. Doubt it would work as it is hard enough to find fans for one baseball team but seeing all these rain/snow outs early on makes one wonder.

Phil Hughes faces the Sky Chiefs and Josh Banks tonight at 6.  This afternoon, David Purcey gets the start for the Fisher Cats in the first game of a double dip.  They're just under way.

2 early positive signs...

Chip Cannon tripled in his first at-bat.

David Purcey has six up and six down, five by strikeout

Another positive note.....Robinson Diaz has come off the DL and started at DH today for the Fisher Cats. I think he's got a good upside as a solid, contact hitting catcher.

Update...Purcey 6 IP, H, W, 10 K's.
Mike Green - Wednesday, April 18 2007 @ 02:18 PM EDT (#166099) #
Purcey finished with a 7 inning complete game 1-hitter, with 1 walk and 11 Ks.  He's not going to be in double A for long.

Great to see a few solid starts for Purcey to start off the year.  Maybe the light has finally turned on for him!
Hodgie - Wednesday, April 18 2007 @ 02:41 PM EDT (#166102) #

With a 9/1 K/BB ratio to start the year, do we dare to dream that Purcey has found sustainable control? He is apparently bound and determined to get back to AAA ASAP.

I am endeavouring to; none to successfully mind you; not get too giddy over the the early season developments of Misters Purcey and McGowan.......oh what a boon that would be!

Ryan Day - Wednesday, April 18 2007 @ 02:50 PM EDT (#166105) #

Purcey had a pretty hot start at AAA last year before becoming unhinged, so this may or may not mean anything. Everything I've read about him suggests he has problems keeping his mechanics consistent, so he may alternate good & bad for a couple years.

 Still, it's a nice start.

Mike Green - Wednesday, April 18 2007 @ 03:11 PM EDT (#166107) #
Actually, Purcey had a semi-hot start last year. His control was pretty terrible all year, and he really hasn't had decent control since 2004 in Auburn.
Ryan Day - Wednesday, April 18 2007 @ 03:18 PM EDT (#166109) #

Good point - I had forgotten his control was still pretty poor. Though I could live with some wildness if he could hold batters to a 156/313/247 line.

(which, obviously, he couldn't, since even AA hitters soon realized he couldn't hit the plate without a laser-targeting system)

not get too giddy over the the early season developments of Misters Purcey and McGowan

Right, but when your two highest ceiling pitchers both have a couple starts at the beginning of the year that are at or above their best performance for all of last year it's encouraging.

It'll be interesting to see if there's any scout chatter at BA or BP after today that might tell us more than the numbers.
Mike Green - Wednesday, April 18 2007 @ 04:02 PM EDT (#166115) #
Purcey and McGowan share one more thing.  McGowan turned 25 last month, and Purcey will turn 25 in 4 days.  It may not be entirely a coincidence that they seemed to have found something at the same time.

In my dream world. Unfortunately, I think there's a rule that exists where minor league teams have to be a certain number of kilometers (miles?) away from the Major League team. It sure would be nice though.
Sherrystar - Wednesday, April 18 2007 @ 04:08 PM EDT (#166120) #

I am keeping my fingers crossed that this is the year where it all comes together for both of them... especially for Dusty since this is his last chance with the Jays... I'm hoping that these "semi-young" pitchers are like young d-men in hockey and they take that extra time before they ready

McGowan and Purcey back on the "prospect" radar would just add even more excitement for the 2007 year and beyond!

vw_fan17 - Wednesday, April 18 2007 @ 04:13 PM EDT (#166121) #
Somewhat OT, but.. One time, when playing softball (slopitch) in the church league I used to play in, we only had 8 guys show up for the game. It was at a relatively small field. Our team was pretty decent offensively. I think they were also missing a guy (only 3 outfielders, no rover).

We were visitors.

I was batting last (8th) that day.

I made the first out of the top of the 1st inning during my SECOND at-bat.

I think the final score was something like 26-7.

it's encouraging.

It is, but the weather is SO BAD that I'm going to hold off on this being a huge step forward until it actually stops raining and breaks 40 degress F.

Mike Green - Wednesday, April 18 2007 @ 04:30 PM EDT (#166125) #
Not to nitpick, Jim, but the boxscore today said that it was 45 with the wind blowing out for today's game in Connecticut.  Not exactly a hitter's paradise though...

McGowan has often exhibited decent control, but for Purcey to have it at this level is a real step forward.  They both need some more time undoubtedly, but I am optimistic, particularly about Purcey.

rtcaino - Wednesday, April 18 2007 @ 04:42 PM EDT (#166127) #

That is tremendous news about Purcey: Having him turn the corner would be great news for the organization. But in particular is would be a nice feather in the cap of JP and his scouting department. Plus it would make it a lot more fun to follow the minors this year!

Any who gents, I don’t get a chance to post often these days, so I’d like to thank you all (for the hundredth time) for you hard work and thoughtful comments! I don’t know many people who can name many Jays prospects, let alone converse about the virtues of our young pitching: you guys supplement nicely, my lack of meaningful social interaction concerning minor league ball!

From our September 2006 interview with Dick Scott..........

From injuries we moved on to discuss some specific players who have, or have had, question marks about their performance.  Number one on that list is David Purcey who has a great arm but problems with his delivery and consistency.  Purcey has struggled for two seasons now and Dick was asked if it was time to redo Purcey's delivery?  Purcey is headed for the instructional league to get some extra work in.  We are not trying to remake his delivery, just smooth it out a little.  He is a bit mechanical at times, he is a big guy, sometimes he goes too quick to the plate and his arm doesn't catch up, other times he is just worried too much about his mechanics.  We told him you have good enough stuff you just have to get it over the plate.  When he gets it over the plate guys don't have good swings against him.  He has a plus fastball even though it's not 95, more 91-93 but it has good movement and a lot of life on it.  His curveball is a plus curveball, his change is a little below average right now but he will be fine, he is just a little slower developing than most guys.

I have seen Purcey pitch and he has nasty stuff, a good moving fastball and a big breaking ball.  His command was his problem.  Hopefully those tweaks that Dick Scott and his team worked on ware now paying off.

It looks like McGowan is going to get the start tonight for the Chiefs instead of Banks.  McGowan vs. Hughes is quite a matchup.
Rob - Wednesday, April 18 2007 @ 06:32 PM EDT (#166134) #
The radio broadcasters (Bob McElligott and Mark Lukasiewicz) have noted that McGowan has fallen behind nearly every batter so far after two innings. The not-so-new-and-improved Gameday says he's thrown 35 pitches (17 strikes) to seven hitters, and it confirms a first-pitch ball to every one.

Oh, and Chad Mottola is playing CF. No, really.
R Billie - Wednesday, April 18 2007 @ 06:35 PM EDT (#166135) #

McGowan versus Hughes is scoreless after two.

McGowan continues to be hard to hit while struggling to throw a high number of strikes.  He has a walk in this game but only 17 of his 35 pitches were for strikes (less than 50%).

Hughes has given up a single but is much more consistent in the strike zone, 21 of 29 pitches for strikes and no walks.  He also has 3 strikeouts to McGowan's 2.

R Billie - Wednesday, April 18 2007 @ 06:37 PM EDT (#166136) #
Going through the log, including two hitters in the third inning, McGowan has not thrown strike on a first pitch to a batter yet in this game.  His command looks like an issue still despite the good results.
Rob - Wednesday, April 18 2007 @ 06:57 PM EDT (#166138) #
Oh well, there goes the no-hitter. Single-single-walk-single plates two in the fourth, and it's worth pointing out that after getting ahead of Beattie, McGowan quickly went 2-1 before the runs scored. He also threw a first-pitch strike to Shelley Duncan, but unfortunately another 2-1 count ensued.

I forget who said "two strikes out of three" is more important than "strike one" but I'd apply it to this start without hesitation. This isn't sounding good.
R Billie - Wednesday, April 18 2007 @ 08:51 PM EDT (#166140) #

Well it's certainly easier to throw two strikes out of three if your first pitch is a strike at least some of the time.  By no means a terrible start for McGowan but illustrative of what he still has to work on because command problems will be magnified against veteran big league hitters.  Three walks in 5 innings and McGowan has regularly been at 90-100 pitches through 5 innings in each of his starts when he should be more around 75 pitches.

If this trend continues the Jays may want to consider putting him into long relief to make sure he doesn't overly tax that repaired elbow.

Rob - Wednesday, April 18 2007 @ 09:13 PM EDT (#166141) #
Well it's certainly easier to throw two strikes out of three if your first pitch is a strike at least some of the time.

Definitely, and McGowan showed that tonight: for any plate appearance lasting at least four pitches, a first-pitch strike became 1-2 four out of six times, while ball one was followed by two straight strikes only 3 out of 10. I'll admit that I bailed on the game after the third, at which point McGowan had not thrown a first-pitch strike (save for a ball in play), while throwing 9 first-pitch balls.

If you take away balls in play (which I crudely defined as hits, groundouts, and flyouts from the boxscore), McGowan has only thrown 52% of his pitches for strikes so far this season (only 46.8% today, which is where our concerns come from).

Ah, whatever. It's April.
timpinder - Thursday, April 19 2007 @ 01:06 AM EDT (#166147) #

Nice to see Purcey successful in his first two starts.

Despite McGowan's control problems today, he's been good in two starts, and ok in his third start, based on the end result.  5 IP and 2 ER isn't the end of the world, and he still had 5 K's despite his 3 BB.  It seems like he's making progress, but there is a sense of urgency with him because if he's not starting for the Jays by the end of the year there's a strong possibility that he never will.  I'll continue to cross my fingers and hope for the best with him.  If he could come around this year, and I still think that he will, it would be a huge boost.  Everyone has off days, and I'm hoping that today was one of them for McGowan.  When he pitches 7 innings for three straight starts, then I'll really start to get excited.

Finally, 52% of first pitch strikes doesn't seem bad to me after you've excluded balls in play.  I imagine that most of those balls in play were strikes and should be included in the statistics.

Hodgie - Thursday, April 19 2007 @ 09:15 AM EDT (#166149) #

"If this trend continues the Jays may want to consider putting him into long relief to make sure he doesn't overly tax that repaired elbow."

I don't think his elbow should be of any concern, at least not any more concern than normal. He has had 2+ years to rehabilitate and has shown no lasting effects. What he needs are innings and the work, while not always perfect is beneficial none the less. That said, I am not overly concerned with yesterday's start. He has changed his approach, and when he was missing, the majority of the time it was down in the zone assuming of course that Gameday can be trusted.

For what it is worth, there seemed to be some insinuation that had the Chiefs actually played a CF yesterday the results of that 4th inning might have been much different (Chad Mottola in CF?).

Jim - Thursday, April 19 2007 @ 10:50 AM EDT (#166158) #

Not to nitpick, Jim, but the boxscore today said that it was 45 with the wind blowing out for today's game in Connecticut.

It was 45 yesterday?  Didn't feel anything like it.  It's the worst April weather of my life.  It's been so windy it's unreal, and half the state of Connecticut is currently underwater.  Maybe it's real improvement, but it's quite a small sample, and I can't even fathom being outside for three hours in a row, nevermind trying to hit in this weather.
