The Arizona Fall League is holding its Fall Stars Game this Saturday. One Blue Jays prospect is in the game and you can help another get there as well.

Lefthander Chad Girodo has been selected to represent the Jays for the East squad. The 24 year-old has tossed five shutout innings with a WHIP of 0.60 and two strikeouts. Rowdy Tellez hopes to join Girodo on the roster but the slugging first baseman needs to beat out Cubs infield prospect Jeimer Candelario and Tigers outfield prospect Mike Gerber in the Fall Stars Final 2 Vote. Just use the preceding link to vote for Rowdy but if you need more convincing, check out his scouting report on the AFL website. The 20 year-old Tellez has a .909 OPS in 44 at-bats and leads his Salt River Rafters squad with three home runs and 13 runs batted in.

Checking out other Blue Jay performances in the AFL, righty Brady Dragmire has thrown five scoreless frames with a 7-3 K/BB total so far while Justin Shafer has a 1.29 earned run average and a 8-2 K/BB ratio over 7 innings. Jeremy Gabryszwski hasn't fared quite as well with a 1-0 record and a 4.76 ERA over 11 innings in which he has walked four and struck out only five. Roemon Fields has batted .205/.308/.312 in 44 at-bats while stealing seven bases in 11 tries.

Thanks for the new minor league thread, #2JB.  Tellez looks to me to be a keeper.  In discussions about extensions/trades for Bautista and Encarnacion, it's important to bear in mind that Colabello is here and Tellez and Guerrero Jr. have decent chances to be later.  The 1B/DH positions are quite well-covered.

Tellez if off to a great start in the AFL, it's exciting to have a legit power prospect in the org.

Girodo is a longshot to be a third lefty in the big league pen next season.  He was a cheap senior sign and a 4 year teammate of Kendall Graveman, who according to Bluebird banter was only touching the low 90s going into 2015 at 24 years old, but his sidearm delivery has been tough on lefties.  He had a great 2015 and was dominating AA before struggling a bit in a 4 outing taste of AAA.

Down the road I'd really like to see Rowdy at first and Vlad Jr. at third. I doubt either will happen. I suspect Tellez flames and Guerrero ends up at first. One out of two ain't so worse.
To me Tellez is too immobile, too slow in his reactions and his swing is too slow. However, when he does connect - KAPOW! I think he'll end up as a pretty good AAAA guy.

Mike, do you think Collabello can repeat? I'd love it if that were the case, but he screams fluke to me.

to me rowdy has managed to put up excellent numbers (and peripheral supporting numbers) even though his power has barely shown yet. His contact and patience skills make him much much more than just a power prospect, imo. I think he has an excellent chance of making it, and in a big way.

I am praying that Guerrero shows similar contact and patience in the pros.

Colabello'a batted ball profile was unusual. He hits the ball very hard mostly on the ground but with a lot of line drives. When he does put the ball in the air, it leaves the yard a lot. He spreads the ball over the field very well.

I don't think he will be quite as good in 2016 but good enough to hold an everyday job if you want.

Cola is no fluke. He has done it at the major league level for 2 years now, discounting part of last season when he was plying with an injury. If one uses the eyes to watch him swing rather than looking at stat sheets, it can easily be seen that he is really a pure hitter with a great swing.....probably the best pure hitter on the team. He will never be more than an average HR guy but is capable of maintaining a .300 plus BA imo.

Uglyone, this is one of those more advanced stats questions I was unclear about earlier in the season... to me, it looks like Tellez's power is really emerging at 20 years old in A+.  I'm not sure how ISO works relative to age and league, but Dunedin is not a hitter's paradise and yet he finished this season with a .198 ISO in 148 Abs.  Fangraphs tells me that you need 550 ABs to be predictive, but he's got just under 550 since being promoted to Lansing and he's around .160 over that time period, while being young for his level.  What would you like to see as demonstration that his power was already on display?

I agree thought that his profile looks more than 'just' slugger.

what affect does age relative to level have on K and BB%s?
uglyone - Wednesday, November 04 2015 @ 12:05 AM EST (#314689) #
yeah that ~.200iso is more like it. but even that is not crazy power yet. based on reports the .250 level should be in reach.

the ~.150 he was posting at lower levels wasn't much power at all. a guy like Gose was doing that at the same ages and levels.

so for me that .198 in A+ is finally his power starting to show. and i see now he's up to .250 in the AFL. that's more like it.

If his power isn't enough for you, Rowdy Tellez stole a base yesterday. Good to see him diversify his skill set! ;D

Roemon Fields also tripled, singled, stole a base, walked and drove in two runs according to the Baseball America prospects report.
uglyone - Wednesday, November 04 2015 @ 03:00 PM EST (#314732) #
he's had 6 or 7 of those this year. which might tell us he's athletic enough to have 1B defensive potential.

Interesting Fangraphs article on Devon Travis. He hit 5 fly balls that left the infield on his pull side. All 5 also were home runs as well.

The top 30 prospects list should be out soon I hope.

So far I look at the list on the Jay's site and thanks to uglyone, his list.

I am looking forward to the comments of the Bauxites on each prospect.

The releases qualify as house cleaning, but a some of those FAs will resign.  Guys like Jonathan Diaz and Bobby Korecky have been down this road with us before, and AAA needs lots of depth.

Good luck to those players moving on though - someone like Scott Copleand in particular might get a shot as a mid reliever with the right NL team.
