The four affiliates had seven hits, six hits, five hits and three hits. Only one of them won by scoring nine runs. And of course it was the team with three hits, New Hampshire. Their opponents had one of the greatest self harm games you could see. Vancouver's opponents Tri-City had just three hits but they scored four runs to defeat the C's. The bright spot was Trey Yesavage who struck out nine in four innings.

NOTES

The Bisons had seven hits, Michael Stefanic had two. Alejandro Kirk had two of the three RBI with a single.

Robinson Pina got the start and was charged with three runs in 2.1 innings. CJ Van Eyk pitched in relief and went five innings so it doesn't seem like a bullpen move. He was taken deep twice in his five innings. He did have seven K's.

New Hampshire scored nine runs with just three hits. The first run came from a walk, a steal and an error. The second run came from a home run by Eddinson Paulino. That was followed by an error, a steal and a single. Three runs in the eighth came via a walk, an error, another error, a hit batter and a wild pitch. New Hampshire scored three more runs in the ninth, again without a hit. Three walks, catchers interference, an error and a wild pitch. In total Chesapeake had six errors.

Trey Yesavage was excellent, nine K's in four innings. He did give up a run, a ground ball double to right, followed by an error on a bunt. The run was earned because the next hitter singled on another ground ball to right. Pat Gallagher followed and struck out four in his three innings.

Edinson Batista started for Vancouver and in the first inning he walked four hitters and hit a batter. He didn't make it out of that inning and the C's trailed 3-0. Tri-City had only three hits in the game but it was enough for the win. C's reliever Julio Ortiz struck out seven in three innings. For the season he has 51 K's in 31 innings, that's good. He also has walked 37 in those 31 innings, not so good.

The C's had just six hits by six different hitters.

Austin Cates cruised through four innings for Dunedin. But in the fifth he gave up his first two hits of the game and a walk to let in a run. he left after 4.2 and Daniel Guerra came on. The first pitch Guerra threw was deposited over the fence. 4-0 Ft Myers and Cates now had three earned runs.

The D Jays had just five hits and were unable to get back in the game.

This was Van Eyk's 2nd relief appearance in a row after starting all 17 of his games previously this year. 4 IP the last time. Maybe he's being transitioned to a bulk man or long man role.

I have some faith that both Tolhurst and Van Eyk will be able to help the Jays pen this year if there is a shortage. 2 months left in the season.

Both Tolhurst and Van Eyk are near dead last in swinging strike % among all pitchers with 50+ innings in AAA... which is a huge red flag.

And in his last start, Van Eyk generated whiffs on 4 different offerings but zero on his four seater and sinker (combined 36% of his pitches thrown). It's a problem that plagues a lot of Jays pitching prospects - lack of fastball. He can throw it for strikes but its straight as a pin and would be creamed in the MLB. His o ly path is as a reliever, similar to Fisher, who throws 80% breaking balls/offspeed.

Right now the big thing is getting guys built up for 2026 - which minor leaguers will move up a level, and maybe get a shot in '26? Yesavage is the big one - there are openings coming for the rotation most likely (Bassitt-Max-Bieber all free agents) so if he can show he is ready he can claim one of those slots. 4 IP 0 BB 9 SO is a very good sign. 68 pitches not as much - needs to keep that pitch count down so he can go 5-6+ in '26. His inning limit this year will keep them from letting him do 5+ until then. His last 2 starts total 8 IP 4 H 1 R 0 BB 14 SO. Damn fine. 2 more like that and his early AA struggles will be forgotten (5 G 17 IP 13 H 12 R 11 BB 23 SO 6.35 ERA). His peak for pitches this year was 79 in A+ on May 31st. His low is 48 in 4 IP (perfect 4 IP - 12 up, 12 down 5 K on July 26th). I could see him going to AAA for September then in spring trying to earn a ML job. In college last year he threw 93 1/3 innings. So I could see up to 130 this year, 160 next. Fingers crossed but he is looking really good for next season's rotation.

Trey Yesavage's double A ERA is mediocre, but nothing else about his performance there is. He's striking out over 35% of batters faced, walking about 10%, giving up many fly balls and mostly to the opposite field and centre, few ground balls and very few line drives. He's not going deep into games, and that's about it on the negative side. Maybe if he walked a few less.

In a surprise move the Jays released Anders Tolhurst today.

Wonder if he's going to Korea ala Eric Lauer?

Johnny King another great start. Happy we didn't trade him!

Tolhurst is in his age 25 season and doesn't look nearly ready for the majors - 3.9 BB/9 7.6 K/9 in AAA won't cut it. But for a 23rd round pick just reaching AAA is a major achievement. Hopefully he gets a shot overseas and learns whatever he needs to in order to get that next bit required to make the majors.

Even after the deals the Jays top 5 has 4 pitchers (Yesavage, Tiedemann, King, Stanifer) plus Nimmala. The next 5 are 4 hitters and 1 pitcher (Bloss). So I'd say pitching was the area the Jays could afford to deal from. FYI: Tolhurst wasn't in the top 30 (not a surprise) - in preseason lists he was named 3 times, never higher than the 32nd (FG).

I think Parker is probably ranked in the top-5 in most lists but yes, Jays are still pitching-heavy even after the trades.

I think it will be like Lauer's case. Pitchers will have a chance to improve the rotation but not out of the gates.

Parker can't catch... poor receiver and has caught 8 of 76 base stealers. Duran is a far superior prospect. Arias also has lots of tools and is now in AA.

Marc, I believe glevin is talking about the new Parker, Jojo, not Aaron.

Ah, you're no doubt correct. Completely forgot about the guys that haven't played yet.
