NOTES

Buffalo won game one with just three hits. Grant Rogers had a tough start to the season, he had a 14 plus ERA after two starts. He improved that a lot on Wednesday with four shutout innings, three hits and three K's. He was pulled after 67 pitches. Brendon Little came on after him, he walked one but followed that with a double play.

Buffalo went one better in game two, a win with just two hits. A pair of two run home runs did the job, the homers came from Rafael Lantigua and Yohendrick Pinango. Lantigua's home run came off Mets prospect Jonah Tong who otherwise shut down the Bisons. Yariel Rodriguez started game two and struck out six of his seven outs.

Buffalo may have had trouble hitting but not the Fisher Cats. They racked up 14 hits, all but one of them a single. Jace Bohrofen hit a home run, the only non single. Bohrofen had a disappointing 2025, he had two hits in this game as he tries to regain his prospect status. Eddie Micheletti is the lead off hitter, he had three hits and is leading the team in hitting and OPS.

New Hampshire have had a number of recent disappointing seasons. I don't knew if that was the impetus but NH are starting three free agent hitters in their lineup, trying to get a winning season. So far, so good, they are 3-1.

Austin Cates was promoted to Vancouver last season and pitched well in five starts. Well, 2026 did not start as well, he was charged with three runs over four innings with six hits allowed and four walks.

Vancouver had just four hits, Arjun Nimmala had the only extra base hit, a double.

The Jays selected Austin Smith in the tenth round of last years draft. Smith was a two way player at UCSD but his pitching was described as lacking control.

Last year Smith played 23 games for Dunedin. He hit .259 with a .789 OPS. He has played three games this season and is hitting .286.

Tonight Smith is scheduled to take the mound for his first pro pitching appearance as he becomes the Jays own two way player.

Two former Jays farmhands are off to nice starts for the Marlins: Otto Lopez (.333/.400/.489) and Griffin Conine (.273/.360/.591). Otto we let go after a poor 2023 in Buffalo; Conine we traded after he struck out 36% of the time with a sub-60% contact rate in low-A as a 21-year-old. I certainly didn't think Conine would ever make enough contact to have a major-league career.

Didn't realize that about Smith. Pretty cool.

First appearance for UDFA Brayden Heidel. Averaged 97.2 on the heater and was as high as 99.3.

Weird for the guy to have that much heat but just 8.3 K/9 in college/summer league vs 4.7 BB/9. Suspect his fastball was predictable for hitters or something. Might also be a guy who is a nice find. His last NCAA season he was 10th in innings on his team (team was 55-10) with just 14 IP. That team had a 938 OPS overall so I suspect the park or league was hitter friendly. Should be interesting to see if the Jays can get that heater of his moving from a K/IP to a bigger weapon. For an UDFA getting a 97 MPH arm is a nice find regardless.

A bench player who can throw in mop ups and doesn't count as a pitcher as value but it's a lot easier to swap AAA pitchers back and forth, which is what everybody is doing.

Yeah, I do wonder if he just didn't have much else in his arsenal and is a bit of a project.

Sean Casey was on Blair & Barker earlier and said Jake Casey broke his hamate bone. Was wondering why he only played one game.

Austin Smith was a full 4 years of college kid. Hit 305/404/443 in college vs 261/393/386 as a pro. 4.12 ERA in college, 4.1 BB/9 vs 9.4 K/9. It'll be interesting to see if he can pitch well enough to climb, his bat is OK but needs a lot more power to climb the ladder (A ball at 23 isn't good if he doesn't hit a lot better as an OF).

Smith won't be a two-way player for long with performances like that.
