Might I suggest Frank "Home Run" Diefenbaker?

Can't wait to add Stan Belinda's name to the list!

You could move Jeff King to second and put in Pepper Martin at 3b instead of Norberto at 2b.

It'd be a shame to waste the talents of Bill Campbell, Jack Clark and Jim Abbott, but I guess you don't allow repeaters.

Oops. I meant to say

Can't wait to add Stan Belinda's name to the list!

(shudders)

I was going to put Pepper Martin in, but I couldn't resist Norberto Martin for the pronunciation and the great first name; I've always loved his name.

Can't wait to add Stan Belinda's name to the list!

Heh. Hasn't anyone figured out yet that Belinda Stronach has never run a business, that she just ran a holding company? The one credential that she does have is totally empty. This Emperor has no designer clothes.
Mike Green - Friday, January 30 2004 @ 04:04 PM EST (#80219) #
I'd take Juan Pierre over Stan Belinda any day!

How about an All-Opposition team, featuring those who never got into, or never will get into power? I'll start things off with Kevin Stanfield and Travis Harper.

A girl I went to highschool with had a theory that the government should be run by a single mom, since they had first hand experience of juggling various priorities on a extremely limited budget. I very much doubt that Belinda Stronach is what she had in mind.

I think it was said about a memebr of the Asper family, but whenever I see Belinda all I can think of is the quote, "Here's someone who was born on third base, who thinks they just hit a triple."

Cheers,

Mike

Touché, Mike. I was joking about Belinda, of course, but at least she brings some much needed intrigue to Canadian politics.

I agree; I'd rather have more candidates than fewer. A Stephen Harper coronation probably isn't in the best interest of the NeoTories.

I don't see Martin winning less than 180 seats in the next election, no matter who the Conservatives choose, so it's likely a moot point anyway. In 2008 we get to look forward to the Ben Mulroney vs. Catherine Clark Tory leadership race. That should be a fun one. :)

Cheers,

Mike

Here's someone who was born on third base, who thinks they just hit a triple.

Wasn't that Jim Hightower's timeless crack about George Bush Senior? That was the best political barb until James Carville's nasty take on Monica Lewinsky: "If you drag a hundred-dollar bill through a trailer park, you never know what you'll find."

Belinda Stronach = Arianna Huffington: an attractive but empty vessel paraded around by backroom political operatives. Heh ... not so different from Dubya, come to think of it. She may be a nice diversion, but I think the Canadan polity could use fewer diversions and more actual leadership solutions right now. It's pathetic what passes for political vision in this country.

You can e-mail the results to me in New Zealand. Or possibly the moon.

Born on third base, but thinks [he] hit a triple...

That quote was said of George Bush the Senior. He ended up scoring the first time, but was thrown out second time up... We can only hope like father, like son.

It's a scary thought, isn't it? If that ever happened, I swear I'd run as a dark, dark, dark horse candidate. Either that, or I'd become Prince Michael of Sweden. I haven't decided yet. :)

Cheers,

Mike

I'd probably start another western separatist party and I imagine I wouldn't be the only one.

What about Stockwell Day's granddaughter? I would like to see Mulroney-Clark-Janessa battle it out.

The Governors General don't stack up as well. Two Hall of Fame starters, one HoF outfielder, and two guys who played a single wartime season. If you allow multiple Stanleys, Clarksons, and Alexanders, things get a bit more interesting.

How would an all-prime-ministers vs. all-presidents series turn out?
_Rob - Friday, January 30 2004 @ 05:40 PM EST (#80232) #
I can list Joe Carter, David Bush, Hack Wilson, Adam Kennedy, and Brook Ford(yce).

I had links for all of those players but they didn't work in the preview. Some
thing was added at the end. My other link (Post #17) worked fine, does anyone know what I did wrong?
_Rob - Friday, January 30 2004 @ 05:42 PM EST (#80233) #
Oops, make that "Some < BR > thing was added at the end." but without the spaces.
Mike Green - Friday, January 30 2004 @ 06:01 PM EST (#80234) #
The Americans would demolish us. Gary Carter, Whitey Ford, Walter Johnson (beating out Randy and Indian Bob Johnson), Claudell or U.L. Washington depending on whether they needed a shortstop, Brooks "Hoover" Robinson, Reggie Jefferson...And if they needed more pitching, I'm sure the record books who indicate that Franklin Delano's last name was Koufax.
_John Neary - Friday, January 30 2004 @ 06:16 PM EST (#80235) #
Actually, the presidents would clean up.

Mike Green,

You beat me to Brooks Robinson! And I meant to say Walter, not Randy.

But the president is both head of government and head of state, and the States are older than we are. Say GGs and PMs versus presidents, 1867-present. They'd still win, mind you.

We're hurt by the lack of Canadian equivalents of Roosevelt Brown, or, more to the point, Grover Cleveland Alexander.

Or Lord Byung of Vimy

I can make a much better team, though. I was just picking guys who were more recent players, I tried for balance, and I didn't double anyone up with names (which is the best way of doing this).

If you want the best team possible, throw Tuck Turner, Charlie Bennett, Pepper Martin, King Kelly, Jim Abbott, and Bill "No-Y" Campbell into the mix instead.
