The Braves have traded 1B Wes Helms and RP John Foster to the Brewers for RP Ray King.

Details here.

OK, OK, I'm sorry, I know it's not an important story. I just wanted to write that headline so *badly*.

I get it. It's a fall classic.

Milestone post #100 on the busiest day (by far) in BB's short history -- well over 300 visitors.

Just wondering -- is the new list in the sidebar (20 Hot Topics) acting strange for others? I've put in a plea for help on the Greymatter forum, because on my browser, sometimes it's fine, but other times it repeats the top entry or two. Is there a CGI expert in the house? I can barely write HTML and know nothing about scripts.

Kent -- I'd noticed the same thing, but it appears to be working OK now. Net script is a strange and wondrous thing.

A joke reminiscent of Fergie Olver. No really.

The list werks fine for me. Maybe it's your browser?

Warning! Thread hijack alert!

Eddie's mentioning Fergie Olver reminds me of my favourite Fergie story. In 1985, he was doing colour commentary on a broadcast, and somebody (Don Chevrier?) mentioned that Al Oliver's wife was writing a book. Fergie's response to that was, "I'll bet it's got lots of good recipes in it." My jaw nearly hit the floor.

Fergie trivia: he was briefly a minor league outfielder, and was once a teammate of Denny McLain.

My own contribution to Fergie Lore: I recall that back in the early '80s, when Fergie was doing the CTV broadcasts of Jays games ("How about those Blue Jays?!"), his blithering commentary and general cluelessness got so bad that baseball fans at one Toronto bar started a circulation to have him fired. It gained such momentum that, according to legend, Fergie and Tony Kubek visited the bar, bought everyone several drinks, and ended up playing touch football with the fans out in the street in front of the bar. The petition dwindled away after that.

Don't know if it's true or not, but it does involve Tony Kubek, one of my favourite men in the game, and so it's a good story for that reason alone.

I remember when Buck Martinez was starting off in broadcasting and he was teamed with Fergie on TSN. I felt so bad for Buck, because he was saying all these insightful things and Fergie was just being a goofball. Buck actually barked at Fergie in the late innings of one game when the inanity got too much for him. When Jim Hughson arrived, it was like the cavalry coming over the hill.

Speaking of spouses, did you ever see the bowling-trophy wife Fergie used to take around with him? I have no idea how a Grade-D celebrity like him managed that, but it only confirmed my low opinion of him. No matter how bad the Jays' current commentators may get, they'll never be the Worst Blue Jays Broadcaster Ever.

Wow...a Coach sighting!  It's been too long!  One of the great bauxites, a big reason the site originally hooked me.
