I've been impressed all year by Cory Lidle's stuff. He throws harder, and has better command, than I thought. His April wasn't great as a whole, but he now has three wins and a no-decision in his last four starts, and put everything together in his latest masterpiece: a solo shot by Salmon, singles by the Kingfish and GA, one walk and five strikeouts -- a tidy 103-pitch complete game. That's how Cory was pitching last August, and it's all you could ask from a #2. Not only did he use all his pitches, he kept the hitters off-balance. Lidle shook off Wilson constantly, and like the catcher, I rarely guessed what he wanted to throw or even the location. Neither did the Angels.

Today's assignment is more difficult against this great lineup. Hank Blalock is really impressive; he looks strong at 3B and his bat has lightning in it. A-Rod settled the Gold Glove thing once and for all -- I'm sure Mike Bordick was as amazed as the rest of us at the clinic Alex put on last night. Juan Gonzalez is the laziest player imaginable; it's as if he thinks playing the outfield or running the bases is an imposition. But he's a very tough out right now. So's Everett, whose catch off Hinske last night was sensational. Mea Kulpa's blown calls, on the appeal (Eric stumbled, missed the bag with both toes, but obviously got it with his heel) and on 3-2 to Cat, decided that game. He was awful, and Hollowell, behind the plate today, also owes one to the Jays; I expect better umpiring in our high school league.

It's a 2:05 start, a rare game I won't see or hear for at least a few innings. I'll be back here about 7:00 to find out what I missed. I hope Raffy can wait one more day for #499, and I wish Ryan Drese and/or Todd Van Poppel lotsa luck.

I'll be watching this one on the MLB archives tonight, but probably listening to at least some of the game live.

Here are the starting lineups (according to MLB Gameday):

Stewart LF, Cat DH, Vernon CF, Carlos 1B, Myers C, Hinske 3B, Werth RF, Berg 2B, Bordick SS

Josh sits this one out.

Everett CF, Blalock 3B, A-Rod SS, Raffy DH, JuanGone RF, Sierra LF, Teixeira 1B, Diaz C, Young 2B

They are going with their poor defensive outfield, which should mean lots of singles and doubles for us. I think the youngster is already a better defensive first baseman than Raffy, and so I think the Rangers should make Tex the everyday 1B.

Anyone subscribing to BaseballAmerica.com should really take a look at todays first pre-draft article, "Draft Dilemma: High School vs. College". It's got a little edge in it, as the BA's guys continue to bristle at the influence the Athletics people have brought into the games scouting practices. As per usual, J.P. Ricciardi has his great little quip book out, and he won't be 'scouting high school cheerleaders' this year either.

If I didn't know better, I'd swear the Jays just stole a base.

Sigh. My right brain sure does miss steals, even though my left brain is telling me they are of little value unless used correctly.

Attempted hit and run foiled by a Cat strike out leads to a Stewart stolen base. I'm sure JP will make Stewart do pushups after the game.

No such luck.

Will this be another 1+ inning save for Politte? How Ward-ish of him.

Come on, guys, one more out.

Whew!

For a couple of innings there it felt like the Jays were losing despite being in the lead.

Both Blalock and Palmeiro chased full count fastballs high out of the zone. The result could have been quite different but the Jays will take the win.

Once again, Lidle was breezing but again hit the wall well before the 100 pitch mark and flaked out. I guess the heat really does affect the pitchers in Texas and this was a day game.

A five-out save is wonderful, but we'll have to see how Politte bounces back if he's needed for the ninth tomorrow. When Cliff is sharp, his high fastball "rises" and is hard to lay off, but once in a while it gets hit hard. How was Trever Miller, apart from the historic gopher ball?

Great that Stewart finally smacked one of his doubles over the wall, and it looks like Hinske had another good day with better luck. Looking at the box score, I thought the Jays were running wild, so I laughed out loud at Christian's description of the reluctant steal on the botched hit-and-run.

Do the winter naysayers like Greg Myers yet?

Good point. Politte threw 27 pitches today. Looking over his game logs I noticed that he hasn't ever pitched the day after throwing so many...not since becoming a Blue Jay anyway. Thankfully most of the pen is well rested for Friday so it might not even be a concern.
