A split for the minor league teams last night.

Durham 4 Syracuse 1

Ryan Glynn made his second start for the Chiefs and bobbed and weaved his way through five innings. Glynn allowed eight base runners through five innings and conceded two runs. Simon Pond homered in the fourth to make the Chief's deficit 2-1. Tally Haines came on in the sixth and the first two hitters went walk, homerun. That closed the scoring.

Russ Adams was 1-4; Gabe Gross was 0-4. Simon Pond was 2-4 with the home run.

Matt Michael has the Game Story

New Hampshire 5 Trenton 6

New Hampshire scored in the first. Aaron Hill singled to drive in Anton French. Ryan Houston started for NH and gave up a run in the third and three more in the fifth on two Trenton home runs. NH scored four in the seventh, on four hits and a walk, to take a 5-4 lead. Trenton tied the game off Dan Jackson in the bottom of the seventh and took the lead off John Ogiltree in the eighth, both runs scoring on two-out singles. NH could not get a runner on in the eighth or ninth to try and tie the game.

Anton French and Dominic Rich each had three hits. Hill was 1-4.

Palm Beach 9 Dunedin 10

Ismael Ramirez had his worst appearance of the year last night allowing five runs in three innings. Luckily for him the Dunedin bats were hot. The Jays scored three in the second, two on a home run by Miguel Negron, and two more in the fourth to tie the game. New arival Brad Mumma allowed four runs in the fifth, but Dunedin fought back again. Chad Pleiness and Tracey Thorpe were outstanding for Dunedin allowing only one walk in four innings which gave the offense a chance to catch up.

Dunedin finally took the lead with four runs in the sixth on two hits, two walks and two errors.

Gregg Raymundo had three hits, Miguel Negron had two hits and a walk.

Kannapolis 0 Charleston 1

A pitchers duel last night in Charleston. This game was scoreless until the eighth inning. Justin James was excellent, two hits allowed in six innings with nine strikeouts. Felix Romero pitched two innings with four K's to get the win. Brian Reed pitched the ninth for the save.

Charleston's run in eighth began with two outs when Ryan Roberts was hit by a pitch. Joey Reiman promptly doubled him home. Roberts was not happy to be hit, again, by a Kannapolis pitcher. Words were exchanged after he scored and there was almost a baseball brawl. Ken Joyce had words with Roberts after the game and the two teams hook up again tonight.

Robinson Diaz had two of the five Alley Cat hits.

Game Story
The Alley Cats have not had a player transaction yet this season. Jack Bogaczyk discusses some moves could be coming.

Our Three-Star Selection

The 3rd Star: Tie Chad Pleiness, Tracey Thorpe and Bubbie Buzachero 4.2 innings of relief with only one walk allowed, and that walk was doubled off to end the game
The 2nd Star: Miguel Negron, 2-3, with a walk and a home run, three runs scored and two RBI's
The 1st Star: Justin James, six shutout innings with only two hits

David Bush is in fact pitching for Syracuse in Ottawa. Enjoy the game, Bauxites. New Hampshire (TBA) visits Trenton for the second game of their five-game series (they have a double dip tomorrow). Dunedin is off for the FSL All-Star break. Charleston (TBA-Marcum?) hosts Kannapolis.

In the Charleston article it said John Wesley was on of the last cuts? So we should assume he is healthy and pitching?
_Mosely - Friday, June 11 2004 @ 10:48 AM EDT (#58616) #
I'll bring my camera and get some shots of tonights game. I'll mail them to Jordan or to whomever wants them on Monday.

I think I'll hit tomorrow night's game as well since it's SpongeBob Squarepants day at the park. There are few things in this world that I enjoy as much as baseball, and one of them might be SpongeBob. The other might be chicken shwarmas.
Gerry - Friday, June 11 2004 @ 10:51 AM EDT (#58617) #
I have heard that Wesley is pitching in extended spring training so the arm is OK. He could make Charleston next week.

Interesting quote from manager Ken Joyce in the Charleston Gazette game story:
-Nothing against anyone else in that clubhouse, but nobody works as hard as Joey Reiman. This kid deserves to have success. He works extremely hard on and off the field and good things happen to guys who do that. He’s a true professional

I recall that the Jays were absolutely thrilled to land Reiman in the 16th round last year, 1 pick after Vito and 2 picks before Roberts. Like those guys he's old for the league, but a good hitting catcher can probably find a job in the majors if his defense is passable.

Too bad we cant find stats on their throwing percentage for catchers in the minors.

Jesse Harper finally made his appearance for High Desert Milwaukee High A ball affiliate pitching 4.1 with 4 hits 2ER 2W and 6K.

Johnny, in college in 2003, Reiman threw out 26 of 79 (about 33%) of baserunners. COMN for the stats from his college (you'll have to squint to read it). As you can see from the stats, that was much better than the other catcher who played a fair bit (Trink). FWIW.

I'm pleased to announce that it's Batter's Box North Night at Lynx Stadium in Ottawa! With David Bush pitching for the visiting Syracuse Skychiefs, this seems like a great game to inaugurate Free Ticket Night for Bauxites in the National Capital Region.

If you'd like to join the small but hearty Batter's Box contingent tonight, please RSVP in this thread and tell us how many tickets you'll need. Tonight's match starts at 7:05 pm, and the weather is clear and sunny, though it might get a little on the chilly side once the sun goes down.

Let us know ASAP if you're coming! More contact info later in the day.

Who will you guys be cheering for, Syracuse or Ottawa?
_Jordan - Friday, June 11 2004 @ 11:59 AM EDT (#58624) #
Good heavens, Syracuse, of course. Eddie Garabito and Darwin Cubillan somehow fail to get the local pulse racing.
_JohnnyS99 - Friday, June 11 2004 @ 12:34 PM EDT (#58625) #
Kewl, thanks Mike.
_Mark - Friday, June 11 2004 @ 12:39 PM EDT (#58626) #
I'm still in. Are we meeting inside or outside?
_Jordan - Friday, June 11 2004 @ 01:19 PM EDT (#58627) #
Mark, I'll say outside for now. We'll set a time later in the afternoon.
_Mosely - Friday, June 11 2004 @ 01:23 PM EDT (#58628) #
I'm in. Just 1 ticket for me I guess.

Damn, I can't make the Syracuse-Lynx game tonight, but I was planning to take my son (six) to tomorrow's afternoon game. Too bad I'll miss Bush's start though...
_StephenT - Friday, June 11 2004 @ 01:42 PM EDT (#58630) #
I'll be there.

fyi: the game's also on Rogers 22 in Ottawa; I'm not sure if the Toronto cable is picking it up.
Gerry - Friday, June 11 2004 @ 01:47 PM EDT (#58631) #
According to my Rogers listing tonight's and tomorrow's games will be on Rogers. Tomorrows pitcher should be Sean Douglass.

Oops, forgot the COMN.

Okay, it looks like we have four (myself, Mosely, Mark and Stephen T) for tonight's game. I'll be at the ballpark at 6:30 to pick up four good seats, and I'll hang around out front till everyone else arrives. Mosely and Mark I've met before, so Stephen, look for a big guy with glasses and an "Aspen" baseball cap. Scott, sorry you can't make it! But the Chiefs are back in town mid-August, so maybe we can try again then. Anyone else who'd like to swing by, please do. See you at the game!
_StephenT - Friday, June 11 2004 @ 04:37 PM EDT (#58635) #
Cool, I was planning to be there at 6:30 also. Black Sens cap.

John Sickels comments on the Jays' draft. COMN.
_greenfrog - Friday, June 11 2004 @ 06:46 PM EDT (#58637) #
Interesting comments by Sickels. He seems to think the Jays draft was good (he uses the word "solid" twice to describe prospects).

I like (and understand) JP's approach to drafting, though I do miss having high-ceiling, high school players in the system.
Coach - Friday, June 11 2004 @ 07:09 PM EDT (#58638) #
Draftniks, be patient. We have an exclusive interview coming up, with plenty of commentary from Jon Lalonde, Keith Law and J.P. Ricciardi. It may be a week or two before it's posted, but I promise it will be worth waiting for. Nice to see that Sickels gives their hard work a thumbs-up again.

The Syracuse/Ottawa game is on the Rogers community channel in most of southern Ontario; I'll be doing some channel-flipping.

Adams didn't swing until it was 1-2, then fouled one off until he got his pitch and doubled down the opposite line. Great start, as the shadows favour the pitcher right now.
Coach - Friday, June 11 2004 @ 07:25 PM EDT (#58639) #
Bottom 1: That wasn't exactly big-league camera work, but Adams must have made a good throw on the high chopper, and Bush got a big K to end the inning. Scoreless so far.
Coach - Friday, June 11 2004 @ 07:32 PM EDT (#58640) #
What did I miss? Apparently Mottola lined one off Bush, but apparently he's OK. I really need picture-in-picture tonight.
_Eric - Friday, June 11 2004 @ 07:46 PM EDT (#58641) #
Yeah, it caught him in the thigh, or the butt. Gross flew out in his first at bat. Adams also made a nice play in very shallow left to steal a hit, and now he's also 2 for 2 after a single.
Coach - Friday, June 11 2004 @ 07:46 PM EDT (#58642) #
Another 2-strike hit for Adams, who flared one into shallow CF -- Sequea hustled from first to third, and the good guys may have something going.
Coach - Friday, June 11 2004 @ 07:51 PM EDT (#58643) #
No such luck, as Benard whiffed and Whittaker lined out to right.
Coach - Friday, June 11 2004 @ 08:22 PM EDT (#58644) #
The Lynx chipped away at Bush to load the bases with none out then scored on a very shallow sac fly, as Pond's throw missed the plate by a wide margin. No further damage though; 1-0 after four.
Coach - Friday, June 11 2004 @ 08:51 PM EDT (#58645) #
Bush keeps battling but needs just a little support -- 2-0 through six. The Syracuse lineup is a bit depleted, of course, with so many guys in Toronto.
_NDG - Friday, June 11 2004 @ 10:17 PM EDT (#58646) #
My impression of Bush.

He got a lot of swinging strikes which impressed me. However, as odd as this will sound with 8K's he seemed to lack an ability to put away batters. In the fourth when he gave up the three hits and the sac fly, he was ahead of each of the four batters and had two strikes on each.

Bush did a great job of making Jack Cust look like a clown in a baseball uni though.
_Jordan - Friday, June 11 2004 @ 10:18 PM EDT (#58647) #
Greetings from Batter's Box North! The Skychiefs-Lynx game was a lot of fun for the Ottawa faithful (announced crowd 2,400+; actual crowd 800 and change), less so for the Skychiefs. I'll have a complete report in tomorrow's minor-league update, but suffice to say Russ Adams had a solid night at the plate (2 doubles, single, walk in 5 PAs) but a questionable one in the field, Gabe Gross had a so-so evening, and David Bush pitched a lot better than his final numbers indicated. Tune in tomorrow for the details.
