Baseball North announces presence with authority.

ALOMAR DIVISION:

My Austin Senators enjoyed a second decisive victory, 10-2-1, over the Eastern Shore Birds and maintained the division lead. Continuing the gloomy week for teams named after aerial creatures, BBFL founder Coach’s Toronto Walrus gored eleven wins out of the Thunderbirds via his giant tusks. The T-Birds endured a rough week offensively and also saw their 3.58 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 3.00 K/BB ratio go for naught. The Red Mosquitos bucked the trend by exsanguinating the Gashouse Gorillas 10-2, thus holding on to second place. Despite his poignant complaint earlier yesterday, Pepper Moffatt’s Reykjavik Fish Candy did not collapse and in fact won ten games. AGF rebounded from last week’s frustrations to gnaw six wins and a tie out of Hannibal’s Cannibals.

Reykjavik Fish Candy also set the all-time record for WHIP with 0.79.

BARFIELD DIVISION:

Jay’s Ehs held onto their slender early lead with a 7-4-1 decision over Capers. The Pistol Nine stand just one-half game behind them after soundly defeating the 1-Tool Wonders 8-4. In an epic battle of noobs, the Lubumbashi Posse corralled the Burlington Mazsters 9-3 and took over third place.

Capers set the all-time anti-record in slugging with .284, and Freddy Beach Fracas narrowly missed the 25-inning minimum.

CARTER DIVISION:

It’s the anti-NFL in the Carter Division, where five teams have winning percentages of .667 or better and eight have percentages of .396 or worse. Baseball North continued its plundering ways by dismantling the Mechanical Brains 10-1-1. The Pohnpei Papayas hurtled into second place with an 11-1 victory over some Angry Gnomes. Team Balla turned its frown upside down, reversing last week’s 1-11 nightmare with an 11-1 triumph over the New Jersey Stratuses.

The Middleclass Elitists, despite an 8-4 win over Freddy Beach Fracas (who in fact did make the minimum inning quota, 26.1 IP) are already showing signs of regressing from their 15th place finish in 2004. Pitching has been a downright concern since day one, and Vazquez really need to get his stuff together.

Bonds: Hammerin' Hank Blalock: 11/29 5 5 0 .379 .419 .621
Neifi: Vapid Vernon Wells....: 2/23 0 2 0 .087 .115 .087

Pedro: Rising Star Ryan Drese: 8.0 1 0 2.25 0.75 -
Lima: Jarring Javier Vazquez: 6.0 0 0 7.50 1.50 8.00

In short, we'd better improve quickly, otherwise this could wind up a very long season.

I knew I was getting lucky, but I didn't expect a full 5 games of luck in the first two weeks. Must be good managing!

Awards!

Bonds: Abreu - 300/364/350 3/1/5 (it was an awful slugging week for my team)
Neifi: The middle infield trioka of Hudson/Grudzielanek/Gonzalez

Pedro: Huston Street - 5.1/1/0 1.69/0.94/9.0 (a nice waiver pickup early in the year)
Lima: Gavin (Pink) Floyd - 3.1/0/0 21.6/3.0/.2 (after making Pedro last week...of course without those innings I would have dropped a point)

"It’s the anti-NFL in the Carter Division"

Actually, this past year there were 5 teams at or above .750 and 3 teams at or below .250 in the NFL, which looks very much like Carter.

The Decepticons have hit rock bottom. After beating Homer Jays Simpsons in the trash talking department, the Decepticons laid an egg when it came to backing up the trash talking with some baseballing.

Bonds: Greg Zaun - that's right, Zaun was my best hitter this week. As much as I love Zauny, this is pretty sad.

Neifi: I wish I had Neifi on my squad, he'd be an upgrade. Check out these batting averages: Lowell .091, LWalker .071, Burnitz .100 However, the Neifi this week goes to JJ Hardy who produced a .000/.118/.000. line

Pedro: Roger and Greinke both put up goose eggs in their starts but neither got any run support. Let's hope the Stros and Royals can score some runs as Clemens and Greinke have two starts each this week.

Lima: Jason Johnson - an era of 135.00 means he's no longer on a Decepticon. Brian Anderson, Johnson's replacement, has looked good this year but he's always a triple digit era risk. Look for him to win the Lima next week.

3RunHomer - Monday, April 18 2005 @ 11:59 AM EDT (#112418) #
My Birds choked like the Yankee bullpen against the league-leading Senators.

Bonds: IRod .462 OBP, .680 SLG
Neifi: Everyone else
Pedro: Beckett, Eaton and Wuertz (who?) all did fine.
Lima: Cliff Lee? Steve Reed? "ee" isn't a sign of excellence.
superdevin - Monday, April 18 2005 @ 12:30 PM EDT (#112432) #
team junior felix escapes with a 6-6 tie this week against the cyphers. awards:

bonds: for the second consecutive week brian "don't call me bip" roberts runs away with the award with a line of (get a load of this) 9/8/6/.500/.600/.917

neifi meet raffi 1/1/0/.143/.217/.190

pedro: mariano rivera bounces back from last weeks lima award. although he only had 1 ip and 1 sv it was enough to win me the sv category and that's more than any of these other bums did.

lima: huge battle for the lima this week. i'm going to have to call it a tie. ponson's 3.0/0/0/27.00/3.67/0.25 and brian lawrence's 2.2/0/0/23.63/3.75/1.00 make mulder's 5.0/0/0/10.80/2.40/3.00 look pedro worthy.

tjf is in tough this week against the first place eh's.
Jay - Monday, April 18 2005 @ 12:39 PM EDT (#112439) #
Well, so far so good for the Eh's. Kind of strange losing the majority of the pitching categories last week considering I tried to build my team around that area. Oh well, hopefully we'll have an improvement this week against TJF. By the way, I am in trouble this week as I have to cheer both for and against Mulder...I have him in another league.

Bonds: I have to echo someone's comments earlier from the Alomar league...as odd as it sounds, Greg Zaun is my choice here with a 467/609/933 line for the week.

Neifi: Hidalgo with 083/154/125 ... but it was against the Jay's for the most part so that's ok Richard...just don't let it happen again this week.

Pedro: It was going to be Pedro but while putting up the same non-counting stats, did not get the win so the choice is Oswalt with a 2.57 ERA and 0.86 WHIP

Lima: Rodrigo Lopez and his relative blow-up line of 7.11, and 1.74...but if that's my worst pitching line all year, I'll be more than happy.
Dan Fords Cousin - Monday, April 18 2005 @ 01:26 PM EDT (#112467) #
After the first week's massacre (a 1-11 loss) I guess I can only be satisfied with a 6-5 win. Somewhat disconcerting however that the big unit, harden, zito, kenny rogers, and jose contreras all went winless, even though there were some really good performances among them.

In any case AGF's awards:

Bonds: Goes to Bonds' replacement Pedro Feliz .250/.348/.700 w/ 6R and 10 RBI. The craziest part is that he qualifies as a shortstop!
Pedro: Even if he didn;t get the win Harden was 8IP/0 ERA/0.75WHIP/4.00 K/BB.

Neifi: Dye showed his old A's form with a .130/.167/.261/2R/2RBI performance.
Lima: Ledezma, who was my big-time sleeper draft pick in the 25th round showed why nodoby else picked him, with a 6IP/6.00ERA/1.67WHIP/1.5K/BB

And a note for the GREAT BBFL Commisioner and Statguy: I tried accessing the "records by category" page for 2004, but got an "error 404 - file not found" message. Wanted to know what the all-time records for RBI's was.

Lucas - Monday, April 18 2005 @ 01:49 PM EDT (#112487) #
Re the 404, some time over the winter I accidentally pulled a bunch of html files into a different directory, and my program properly but unfortunately "updated" all the links. I thought I'd corrected them all, but apparently not. I'll fix it.

The Alomar record for RBI in a week is 59, set by the Gashouse Gorillas in 2003.
Jonny German - Monday, April 18 2005 @ 02:35 PM EDT (#112525) #
The Mashers put up a second straight 6-5-1, and with Gagne on the DL and Schilling having made just 1 very poor start in the first 2 weeks, I'll take it.

MVH: Joltin' Joe Randa keeps it going, 5-4-0 .368-.429-.579
LVH: Sean Burroughs, 0-1-0 .125-.176-.125. Bench, Burroughs. Burroughs, Bench.

MVP: Gus Chacin, 14-2-0 1.29-.093-2.33. Not too shabby for a 22nd rounder and my only Jay!
LVP: Bronson Arroyo, 5.2-0-0 7.94-2.29-0.25. 0.25!
Dan Fords Cousin - Monday, April 18 2005 @ 03:18 PM EDT (#112541) #
The Alomar record for RBI in a week is 59, set by the Gashouse Gorillas in 2003.

So AGF was pretty close this week with 55 RBIs. I thought I had a chance when I had 40+ RBIs on Thursday. FWIW, I think I had the lowest RBI number for a week in Alomar last year.

R Billie - Monday, April 18 2005 @ 03:46 PM EDT (#112546) #
If anyone has a closer to trade please drop me a line. I'm willing to deal an everyday offensive player.

So AGF was pretty close this week with 55 RBIs.

Yeah, I lost the category by Tuesday. It was a great match though- if I hadn't started Hernandez and Kazmir on Sunday I might've taken WHIP and ERA based on Sabathia's stellar return from the DL. Hernandez and Kazmir both got rocked though, and it wound up not even being close. The weird thing is that his team SLG wasn't overwhelming, and both of us pretty much sucked in BA and OB%. So AGF, YOU ARE THE CLUTCH GOD! Joe Morgan would be proud... Clint Barmes is carrying my offense- .400/.478/.750, 3 R 6 BRI and 2 SB. Otherwise my offense sucks- I have 3 players on the DL now that Magglio's down, and Gathright got demoted so that Alex Sanchez could be a regular. Bruce Chen is my Pedro- complete game W, allowed 1 R. 15 IP on the year, 9:1 K:BB and WHIP of .87. If anyone wants a mediocre starter, I have too many- mostly borderline guys who'll rack up IP and an occasional win while being pretty ordinary in WHIP, ERA and K:BB. Looking for a corner infielder or outfield help.
Dan Fords Cousin - Monday, April 18 2005 @ 04:52 PM EDT (#112552) #

And Sunday morning I was fuming because yahoo wouldn't let me start Kevin Brown, since it takes a day to drop a player, so I couldn't move him away from the DL. But had he started he might actually have cost me the WHIP and ERA...

The Burlington Mazsters had a tough week against the Lubumbashi Posse. Despite putting up some very respectable numbers in every category we got trounced. Hopefully the team can rebound this week and start to climb back up the standings.

Monkeymen Cubed, Barfield

BONDS: Michael 'Effing' Tucker - 4 runs, 9 RBI and a wacky 375/444/813 line. Two grand slams.

NEIFI: Shawn 'Mo' Green with a quiet 2/2/0/250/333/250

SCHIMDT: Mike 'We Don't Need No Stinkin' Strike-outs' Hampton - 16 IP, 0.56 ERA, 0.75 WHIP.

LIMA: Jason 'Waiver Wire' Johnson - 1/3 IP, 135 ERA, 24 WHIP.

I was wondering about that- sat at my laptop Sunday watching WHIP and ERA drop and K/BB rise while Sabathia pitched, hoping you had Brown on the mound. Then suddenly my numbers started to reverse in a big hurry.

Thought I might catch you on runs, but my offense just tanked on Sunday.

The Archivists, firmly set on the unlikely goal of avoiding the relegation places (NICE DRAFT, NO-DRAFT!) managed to squeak out our first series win, a 6-4-2 decision over W-A-M-C-O. We were up 9-2 with a day to go, but a choke job by Eddie Guardado in our last inning of the week handed over the crucial ERA and WHIP categories.

BONDS : Vinny, Vidi, VICI! A terrific week from Vinny Castilla who hit .538/.600/1.308 for a 1908 OPS. He scored five runs and drove in eight, meaning he won four and tied one category for me singlehandedly. ALL HAIL VINNY!

NEIFI : Tony Womack was just as bad, but the award this week goes to Brian Jordan, who hit .143/.143/.190 and only managed to score one run - one more would have won me the category.

PEDRO : Scot Shields did it all for me this week - one win, one save, 4.1 scoreless innings with only three baserunners.

LIMA : He had a pretty decent 4.50 ERA for the week, but Eddie Guardado's choke job on Sunday night wins him the award for this week. All my starters performed decently.

Doubtless a short-term phenomenon, but it's interesting about assigning the weekly best and worst hitter awards to Bonds and Neifi Perez, respectively:

Bonds: .000/.000/.000
Perez: .357/.357/.500

First in roto points but 6th overall in h2h. I wonder which is a better indicator of long term success?

I can't believe I got beaten badly in a speed catagory. I thought I had that pretty safe.

Now it is time for a battle of the "bashers".

@$$kickers, Carter League

Well, my league average offense barely managed to pull through 1 win, but my pitchers picked me up handly winning 4 cats. But how did I manage to have 2 starters pitch 8 shutout innings, and neither get a win?

Bonds-F. Cat, others had better weeks, but Frankie scored the most runs for me in the only catagory I won

Neifi- D. Jimenez, I was almost tempted to give this to Crawford as he didn't steal a single base this week, but Jimenez's line of .190, .190, .190 is just too bad to pass on

Pedro- B. Myers, 13.2 innings, 7 hits, 1 walk, 13 K's, 0 runs, and just 1 win!!!

Lima- N. Robertson, 5 walks and no k's!! ugh
Spicol - Thursday, April 21 2005 @ 10:38 AM EDT (#113004) #
Jason Lane is second on the Red Mosquitos with 5 stolen bases already.

I'm glad, but that's just not right! It's unnatural.
