Like all great streaks, it had to end sometime. After retiring the first 42 straight batters of his AA career, Jamie Vermilyea’s perfect streak was ended last night with a leadoff single in the second inning. No need to worry though, he’s still working on a consecutive scoreless innings streak (18), consecutive innings without a walk (18), consecutive saves streak (2), consecutive wins in starts streak… how many more can Da Box think of?

Oh yeah, the Jays minor league affiliates won a few more games last night.

Indianapolis 4 Syracuse 5 – Game 1

Indianapolis 4 Syracuse 3 – Game 2

Syracuse won a game!! And they lost a game… but umm…they won a game! Mike Smith threw 5 decent innings followed by 3 shutout innings from Mark Lukasiewicz in the opener. An RBI single from Shawn Fagan in the 8th was enough to pull out the extra innings win in the contest scheduled for 7 innings. Fagan also homered in that game and finished the day 5-7 with a walk. Former Blue Jay Chris Michalak took the loss.

The Skychiefs weren’t so fortunate in the second game, however. Middle relievers Mike Nakamura and Talley Haines were asked to shoulder more innings than they’re used to and each gave up a pair of runs in their 3+ inning outings. Trailing 4-1 going into the 7th the Skychiefs started a late surge highlighted by a 2 run homer from Gabe Gross but wasn’t enough to overcome the deficit. Gross with 2-7 over the doubleheader while Simon Pond went 0-7.

New Hampshire 6 Altoona 3

Nobody’s perfect, but 5 shutout innings is still pretty good. 6 hits and a hit batsman were the only blemishes on Jamie Vermilyea’s record. Jamie also sports a 2-0 record with 2 saves, 0.00 ERA, 0.33 WHIP, 11/0 K/BB in his 4 appearances. Home runs from Maikel Jova, Mike Snyder and Paul Chiafreddo sparked the offense for 6 runs. Ty Godwin, Dominic Rich, Aaron Hill and Chiafreddo all reached base 3 times in 5 plate appearances.

John Ogiltree gave up a run and loaded the bases in the 9th before giving way to Brandon League who got the final out and the save. Todd Ozias and recently demoted Chris Baker are scheduled to pitch in this today’s doubleheader.

Brevard County 2 Dunedin 4

Vito Chiaravolloti’s 3 run bomb in the 5th put the Jays in the lead for good in this one. Justin James pitched 6 strong innings yielding only 2 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks with 5 K’s. Dunedin’s version of Chulk/Frasor closed the door as Andy Torres and Bubbie Buzachero finished up the final 3 innings.

Prospects Rodney Medina, Raul Tablado, Miguel Negron and Ryan Roberts all went 1 for 4.

Charleston 4 Lakewood 6

Danny Core threw 6 innings of 2 run ball with 4 K’s. Jermy Acey had another pair of hits, Morrin Davis drove in 2 runs and Clint Johnston reached base 3 times as the Alley Cats scored three in runs in the top of the 8th to take a 4-2 lead. It was all for nought though as Felix Romero gave up 4 runs on 5 hits over the final 2 innings

Brooklyn 6 Auburn 7

Juan Perez had 3 K’s with no walks or home runs but Brooklyn was finding some holes as they pounded out 9 hits in 4.2 innings, which was good for 4 runs off of the stunned Perez. Eric Rico was able to shut Brooklyn down for 2.1 innings (3K, 1 BB). That was long enough for Auburn to bust out with 5 runs in the 6th to take the lead.

Matt Dalton ran into trouble in the 8th leaving with 1 run already in and the bases juiced with only 1 out. Kristian Bell came on to relieve Dalton and allowed only one of those inherited runners to score on a sac fly. Bell also finished the 9th for the save.

SS Ryan Klosterman had three singles and a double while Aaron Mathews, Brian Hall and Adam Lind all reached base three times. Joey Metropoulos doubled and walked in 4 plate appearances.

Pulaski 8 Danville 11

One level down, Edwards Rodriguez suffered the same fate as his countryman Juan Perez. Rodriguez struck a couple out, didn’t walk anybody or give up any home runs, but the balls were finding holes as Danville pounded 8 hits and 5 runs in 2.2 innings. Canadian James Pidutti continued the trend, striking out 2 and walking none but did give up a run on 4 hits in 2.1 innings. Michael Rider and Eddie Cannon didn't have much more luck, though Cannon did get 5 of his 6 outs via strikeout.

The heart of the order came through for Pulaski as Brian Bormaster had 2 doubles and a single, as did Nick Thomas. Yuber Rodriguez topped that with 2 triples and a single. It just wasn't enough to catch Danville.

Chip Cannon sat last night after being removed in the middle of Monday's game. I haven't read any injury reports.

With Humberto Quintero (CA, SD) being promoted to the majors...Robinzon Diaz has been added to the Futures Roster...

The should promote Nick Thomas to Charleston. After the promotions there is a lack of serious prospects there and Thomas is overmatching rookie league pitching.

That's just odd. Guillermo Quiroz is healthy and playing, he really should be the #1 candidate. I know the scouts are very high on Diaz but he's in low A and not exactly tearing it up. Diaz may very well be the future, but the very distant future. Quiroz will most likely be in the majors for several years before he needs to worry about losing time to Diaz.

Oh well, Quiroz has already been once, good for Diaz! I hope he has a great time playing amongst the best prospects in the game.

Anyone know what happened to 2004 28th round pick Joshua Lex (catcher/1B). He has been removed from the Pulaski roster and so have his stats. He isn't on any of the other rosters either.

I believe the guy is telling the truth but I guess it's not "official" yet.

I didn't get Thigpen from a website. Kendall (Big12Baseball.com) told me about the signing. He said that he heard from one of Thigpen's close friends.

Though the signing I guess is still unsubstantiated the signing bonus listed of $625,000 fits like a glove into what 2nd rounders are getting. COMN

Any thoughts on whether Ron Davenport is really a prospect now? I know that this is his third year in the FSL so his stats have to be taken with a grain of salt. He's sort of like Tablado. He was a high school pick that hasn't really done a lot prior to this year. The question is whether this represents a "blip" brought on by repeating levels and small sample sizes or whether this is real development. I'm skeptical only because I've never really heard any of the Jays front office mention him at all (let alone as a prospect).

There are quite a few guys in Dunedin that have been scolding the ball, but there has been no call ups (aside from pitchers). Is it possible the J's and JP are trying to protect there hitting prospects from the not so satisfactory hitting conditions in New Hampshire? If that is the case with Syracuse being such a horrible team maybe they should throw a couple up to AAA, I am sure they can't do any worse than the current Chiefs.

Nigel, Davenport had a great year in Medicine hat his rookie year, and a so so year in Low A. He is still not very old, so he could be considered a prospect if he keept it up. I believe he was drafted as a Shortstop too.

As mentioned on the game thread, JP confirmed that Thigpen is signed. Also, Jackson is closer than Purcey to signing.
