'Cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance
Well they're no friends of mine

The Fan 590 has announced a few roster moves. The short version is as follows:
  • Bobby Estalella moves from the 15 to the 60 day DL, freeing up a space on the 40 man roster.
  • Bob File sent to the minors, freeing up a space on the 25 man roster.
  • Kevin Frederick called up to the big club and added to both the 25 and 40 man roster.
Thanks to Smack, and Rob, and James W for the heads up.

So who is Kevin Frederick?

He's a 27 year old reliever drafted by the Twins in 1998. He's been excellent this year, putting up the following numbers:
  • AA: 21.1IP, 18G, 1.27ERA, 1HR, 5BB, 26K
  • AAA: 27.1IP, 20G, 0.99ERA, 2HR, 9BB, 26K
He won't be replacing anyone in the rotation, but he looks like he has the potential to be a valuable addition to the bullpen.

Your thoughts?

Frederick was drafted in 1998 I think. He wasn't very good at AAA level last year but maybe that was fluke or small sample or something.

Was he really the next pitcher in line for a callup?

Oops... you're right. I'll fix that ASAP.

Good Move, File was a disaster waiting to happen, his k rate was one of the worst on the team.

Glad to see Frederick move up ... as a reclamation project, he's been really interesting so far, and I'll be looking closely to see how he performs. That said, control has always been an issue for him, and that hasn't changed this year.

File can't say he didn't see this coming: 5.68 ERA, 21 IP, 31 H, 10 BB, 11 K, 3 HRs. I don't know if he's going to get another chance: the front office can have a pretty short fuse when it comes to relievers (those without guaranteed contracts, anyway):

By the by -- Jason Frasor, month by month:

Month IP ERA Opp. BA
May 15 0.00 .137
June 12 3.75 .205
July 5 5.06 .318

JP has been talking up Frederick for a while now. I'm not surprised at the call-up. As for File his WHIP was almost 2. Enough said.

Rick Adair on Kevin Frederick, from Gerry's Batter's Box interview with Adair mack in May:

"When you look at his age, what he’s done in the past, his stuff, and what he’s been doing for the last month, to me this guy is very close to being a major league pitcher. His command’s gotten better, he’s a three-pitch pitcher, his intensity is there every day, he’s gotten better at holding runners, his delivery’s improved, and I think he’s ready to help the major league club".

I like the moves. They really should turf Hentgen and bring someone else up.
_Andrew K - Thursday, July 22 2004 @ 01:48 PM EDT (#49763) #
How did we acquire Frederick. He can't have been rule 5 if he wasn't on the 40 man roster before. Did we trade for him?
_Ryan01 - Thursday, July 22 2004 @ 01:53 PM EDT (#49764) #
I think Frederick was claimed on waivers last year from the Twins and then later outrighted to Syracuse or New Haven (forget which) when he struggled.

Frederick was the most deserving of a callup and it had to happpen sooner or later if they want to know if he's an option for next year's pen. Only thing is he can't start.
_Rob - Thursday, July 22 2004 @ 01:53 PM EDT (#49765) #
Waiver claim last March from Minny.
_Ryan Day - Thursday, July 22 2004 @ 01:55 PM EDT (#49766) #
Sensible moves. It'll be interesting to see what Frederick can do.

One vaguely related question, though: What was the point of bringing up Adam Peterson for three games? He skipped AAA, didn't get much of a chance to do anything, and now he's apparently behind Frederick on the depth chart. (not that he shouldn't be) Wouldn't it have made more sense to bring up Frederick in the first place?

None of it's strictly bad. Just weird.

They really should turf Hentgen and bring someone else up.

He isn't holding anybody back. Hentgen's earned the right to go out on his own terms.

I would understand it if he was released, DFA'd, etc, but I would think it undignified and beneath the organization. He's fighting hard for this team, wihtout complaint and without anything left in his tank. He deserves support and respect, not ridicule.
_Brian B. - Thursday, July 22 2004 @ 02:33 PM EDT (#49768) #
They probably wanted to see Peterson against major league hitters and to have him work with Jays pitching coaches to see what he needs to work on - which is what he's doing now at AAA.

Is this an opportunity for Bonus Cuttlefish [tm]? Nobody yet has pointed out that File and the others, when in the clubhouse, are Men Without Hats.

In an interesting note, if anyone remembers how the Jays opened the Dome to BP with teh Yankees before the season began in 2003, you'll also remember there was a Q&A session with JP. I asked JP, "What can we you tell about su two recetn pitching acquisitions, Jason Arnold in the Felipe Lopez trade and Kevin Frederick, who was claimed off waivers from Minnesota." The audio wasn't great, so I couldn't hear his response, although he called me a true fan. If my memory serves me correctly, which it doesn't always, I beleive Coach stood right in front of me in line, and ask JP something about how he'd build the team differently if he was in the NL, or something to do with the differences in approach if you are in the NL vs AL. It put my question to shame. I think I remember him, although I'm not sure, and I'm not sure how I remember him, as I'd have no idea who he was at that point.

Jays opened the Dome to BP with teh Yankees

I read this a dozen times and can't figure it out..
What did they do?

and how come you couldn't hear the answer? ???

its an interesting story though...

I like the moves. See if Frederick can show anything. I can't imagine there's a lot to prove in AAA at 27.

Even in File's good season, prior to his surgery, he had poor peripherals. At his best I think he's an 11th or 12th pitcher on a team.

I would understand it if he was released, DFA'd, etc, but I would think it undignified and beneath the organization. He's fighting hard for this team, wihtout complaint and without anything left in his tank. He deserves support and respect, not ridicule.

This is a results oriented business and Hentgen isn't getting results. Releasing him wouldn't be ridiculing him, and I'm sure Hentgen wouldn't disagree. However, the Jays haven't shown that they'll eat contracts so I expect Hentgen will remain with the team regardless.
Thomas - Thursday, July 22 2004 @ 03:20 PM EDT (#49773) #
The day before the season started, both teams had their batting practice. Normally the Dome is closed to the public, the Jays opened it. The audio was not good for whatever reason, so it was hard to hear answers. Sorry for the lack of clarity in the above post.

You're right, releasing him wouldn't be holding him up to ridicule (starting him for the first time in weeks against Vazquez at Yankee Stadium is actually a better example). I had in mind the sorts of dismissive remarks about him being bandied about on this site, but more often on the radio shows, which to my mind is equally unfair to Hentgen. He isn't mailing it in out there - he's giving every bit of effort he's got, and then some. It would probably be better for all concerned if he would hang them up, but I think given what he's done for the franchise over his career, he's earned the right to finish the year if he wants.

Is there any chance of Hengten pulling a Darren Fletcher? Realizing his time is up and letting. I would rather remember him as he was than how he is and I think that when Fletcher left that year became forgotten for him.

Regarding Hentgen...Even if it made sense to do so, the Jays can't release Hentgen before this weekend when the V Wells Sr Lithograph of he and Doc is unvieled (sp).

No offence Krista, but this is pretty much the best one going...

Thomas, I used to love watching BP before the games... I didn't realize that the Dome isn't even open for that now, Did they have live Q&A? that would have been cool.

I thought it was interesting to hear Gord Ash on the FAN after the game today on Primetime Sports. They were discussing the Delgado no-trade clause and how it has apparently hamstrung the Jays from freeing money to move forward.

Apparently when the new contract was signed, Delgado had the right to renegotiate or either force a trade or play out one more year before becoming a free agent. Maybe someone with a better memory than I can supply the details. Anyway during the negotiation it apparently came down to either a four year deal with a no-trade clause or a seven or eight year agreement without the clause.

Obviously the latter would have been worse but that assumes those were the only two options. For one Delgado was "the best player in baseball" for one year. That didn't mean he had to be paid at that level for the foreseeable future. There was little hesitation in letting Roberto Alomar walk for no return.

Anyway, it's hard to fault anyone for agreeing to keep Delgado around at the time. If ownership is going to say yes to that kind of money and they also OK'ed a $70 million payroll for the next season then those are the breaks. LA is still living with the Kevin Malone legacy though they currently have twice as much money to work with as the Jays.

The only thing for Jays fans to take solace in is that Rogers might be increasing payroll if only slightly next year. So Delgado's money won't be simply pocketed or poured into debt reduction or whatever. If there's any justice for this team they will some how manage to keep Carlos around for another season.

This brings to mind a quote from Delgado's agent in one of Griffin's recent articles. Sloane mentioned he would rather negotiate Delgado a long term deal with a contender rather than have him be a two month rental player. Now this might mean they're open to negotiating their own deal with another team and yet it sounds at the same time like Delgado wants to play out his contract in Toronto. If the latter is the case then what is to stop Sloane from negotiating a long term deal with a contender even if he moves to another team temporarily? That doesn't really follow.

Delgado was set to become a free agent after the 2000 season. Mid-way through 1999, he signed a three-year contract extension with the Jays, but that extension gave him the right to demand a trade after the first year. After his great 2000 season, Delgado likely used that as leverage to get his current four-year deal.
_Paul D - Thursday, July 22 2004 @ 09:05 PM EDT (#49783) #
According to the Fan, JP has given permission to LA and CWS to try to negotiate with Delgado's agent on an extension.

Well that's good news I suppose. Both the White Sox and Dodgers have some nice shiny objects they could give up for Delgado.

Apparently at the end of the First Game Yesterday, Miguel Tejada went down like he'd broken his ankle and had to be carried off the field.. it was right after he made the game winning throw to first...

maybe because it was after the last out, no one saw it, but no one is talking about it either... Anyone know how he is? He seemed to play game 2.
_Paul D - Friday, July 23 2004 @ 08:47 AM EDT (#49789) #
JP was on the fan this morning.

He said that there's no truth to the rumours that CWS and LA have been given permission to talk to Delgado. In fact, he said that they can't be given permission unless the trade has been completed first, at which point they get 48 hours to try to negotiate a trade. And he said that won't happen because he's not trading Delgado.

He said that most of the trade talk is about his pitchers but that he's not trading Lilly or Batista unless he gets wowed, but that he's had talks to teams about Terry Adams.
_Daryn - Friday, July 23 2004 @ 12:45 PM EDT (#49790) #

However the Sun today is quoting J.P. as sayign that Boston has contacted him regarding Terry Adams..

Not true. Read closer:

"We've had a few calls (concerning Adams) from them," Ricciardi said.

Does he see a fit between the two teams?

"I'll let you know by the 31st (July)," Ricciardi said, referring to the date of the trade deadline.

He never mentions Adams. The writer inserts that name and we assume that's what he was talking about. It could have been:

Q: Has Boston called about possible trades?
A: We've had a few calls from them.
Q: Will you be trading anyone?
A: I'll let you know by the 31st.

J.P. never states in that article that Boston has called about Adams. We know the media is not fond of the GM, so anything they insert in his quotes should be viewed with a skeptical eye.
