The three front runners for the medals - Japan, Cuba and Canada - have all started with two wins. Canada took advantage of some erratic defence and scored 9 runs in the first two innings on route to a 9-3 victory over Italy. Check out the gory details from Canadian Press here.

The pivotal 2nd inning began harmlessly enough - with a Todd Betts groundout. Ryan Radmanovich singled and Jeff Guiel hit a bouncer to the third baseman whose errant throw was not corraled by the first baseman. Adam Stern hit a solid single to drive in the third run of the game, taking second on the throw with Guiel going to third. With the Italian infield drawn in, Pete Orr ripped a grounder through second baseman Dallospedale. The poor second sacker was unjustly charged with an error while Guiel scored. Next up, Stubby Clapp. After Orr stole second, Stubby ripped a triple over the rightfielder's head to plate 2 runs. 6-1 Canada. Klassen walked and that spelled the end for starter David Rollandini. Lefthander Fabio Milano came in to face lefthanded hitter Pierre-Luc Laforest.

Laforest blasted the ball into the howling wind for a 3-run shot to rightfield. It was 9-1 and the Canucks put it into cruise mode after that. Kudos to Italy for resisting the temptation of bringing in lots of Italian-Americans and going (for the most part) with players from their domestic league.

Chieh-ming Wang, of the AAA Columbus Clippers, got the start for Taiwan against Australia. Rockies prospect Chin-hui Tsao was deployed as a closer in the 8th inning. A 3-0 victory over Australia was the result, and the Taiwan Times has a game story. They mistaken refer to third baseman Glenn Williams as a Canadian (perhaps they are confused about his status as a Blue Jays farmhand). This loss might be the one that eventually keeps the Aussies out of the medal round.

Greece almost pulled off a miracle comeback, but the three runs they scored in the 9th fell one short as Cuba emerged with a 5-4 victory. I think the Cubans are merely playing possum and will bare their fangs in the medal round. Star Orioles prospect Nick Markakis drove in two with a two-out triple. Nicholas Theodorou's single plated Markasis to bring the upstarts within one. Star closer Pedro Luis Lazo (the Cuban Lee Smith) was brought in and struck out James Kavourias to end the game.

Canada next takes on the Dutch, who hung tough against Japan before bowing 8-3. Former Jays farmhand Diegomar Markwell started for Holland and kept his team in the game. The underdogs held a 3-2 lead until Japan scored 2 in the 5th. Japan added a 4-spot in the 8th to ice the game.

Canada-Netherlands begins at 3:30 AM on TSN.

3:30 am huh? Think I'll stay up for that one. Anyone care to pass the time? Rob did you wind up buying MVP today?

I doubt you're still checking the board but I guess i'll pass the next hour chatting about whatever.

The NBC site has a mini profile of Stubby. "Clap for the Stubb-man". COMN.

Anybody watching the game? I'm up late (I always stay up late) so what they heck..

Cool lettering on the NL uniforms.. looks like some retro 1970's unis.

NL lefty starter is throwing a Zito-style big breaking curve that the catcher is having trouble handling. Pond's up with bases loaded.

Home run for stubby, 6-0 canada in the 4th

Well, I finally get here and the good guys are up by 7.... I've actually never seen a Stubby AB before...

What exactly is the reason why the MLB doesn't take a break in action so their athletes can play for their respective countries?

I was up to see the last 4 innings of this game. Kusiewicz came in and was wild but got a double play ball. Ogletree looked good and then Mears and Myette finished up. Some slow throwing lefty shut down all of our lefty bats for the last 4 innings so hopefully Japan and Cuba throw righthanders against us.

Of course, if I had properly read the previous posts, I would have seen that NL started a lefty and we hit him well. Guess that's what insomnia does for you :)

Man, I couldn't handle it. Fell asleep.

Anyway, it looks like Team Canada did just fine without me, though again they couldn't get the mercy rule invoked to save the pen. That turns out to be OK; the bullpen was bloody marvelous, as Ogiltree, Mears and Myette each pitched a perfect inning and Kusiewicz was perfect except for hitting Ivanon Coffie.

Canada won 7-0, with all the runs scored early again. Shawn Hill gets the win with a line of 5 3 0 0 2 2.

Simon Pond was the DH (his true calling indeed) and was 1-for-4. Pete Orr, Pete LaForest, and STUBBY FREAKIN' CLAPP all hit home runs as Kev indicated earlier. Clapp, Klassen, and LaForest (the 2-3-4 hitters) all had two hits and so did Adam Stern.

Taiwan, who are really rolling now, beat Greece 7-1 in the other early game with Canadian ump Don Gilbert behind the plate. So with Italy-Australia and Cuba-Japan still left to play today, here are the standings:

Canada 3-0
Japan 2-0
Cuba 2-0
Taiwan 2-1
Netherlands 1-2
Italy 0-2
Australia 0-2
Greece 0-3

Tomorrow's game is a late game vs Greece. If Canada can win versus Greece tomorrow, and Australia lose to Japan, then Canada will have just about locked up a semifinal berth. I still think four wins will do it outright, because of the strength of Japan and Cuba.

I'll be cheering for Italy to knock off Australia today; if they can do that, Team Canada will be in dynamite shape.

Whoops! Forgot to post a link to the boxscore.

By the way, you want an example of crisply played ballgames? Canada-Holland clocked in at 2:17. Taiwan-Greece at 2:34. Taiwan-Australia 2:25. Cuba-Greece, a 5-4 thriller, was played in 2:21. All the games finished in 2:30 or so, except for Japan versus Holland, which took three and a half hours. IIRC, this is typical of Japanese games which take forever to grind their way to a finish.

TSN has Cuba-Japan live. This should be interesting.

Geez, Australia-Italy is still 0-0 after six innings. Italy's only had two baserunners against AAA pitcher Chris Oxspring but Oz can't buy a run.

Attendance at the Canada/Netherlands: 851. At the Greece/Taiwan game, it was a little better: 1815. I've seen a lot of empty seats on TV except at the swimming venue.

What happened with Cuba-Japan? Did they score off Oxspring? Why must you all be so secretive?
Mike D - Tuesday, August 17 2004 @ 06:25 PM EDT (#40712) #
Australia busted out and beat Italy 6-0. Japan topped Cuba 6-3.

Thanks, by the way, to the Bauxite who recommended the CBC website for Olympic results. It's faster and easier to navigate than the official site, and just as complete.

Thanks.

(It wasn't a good time for me to go on the internet at work, so I couldn't browse around for them myself.)

Nope, didn't buy it yet. I'll let you know the minute I do, however. ;)

How is the Canadian Olympic team anyways? Did Pulaski lefty James Pidutti get invited to play on the national team? He is only 22 though and very young. Isn't Canada not really known for baseball talent. I've seen Pidutti throw several games this year and he has some good stuff. When his sinker ball is working it is game over for the hitters. Good luck Canada. Hope to see you in the medal rounds.
robertdudek - Wednesday, August 18 2004 @ 11:28 PM EDT (#40716) #
Pidutti is only holding his own in rookie ball; most of Team Canada's pitchers have had success in AA or AAA. Some have major league experience. In short, they are far more polished at this point than Pidutti.
_Stan - Sunday, August 22 2004 @ 01:27 AM EDT (#40717) #
Yes, I suppose that is true. He is only in Rookie Ball and has to learn how to pitch to skilled hitters. His last 2 games, he surrendered 5 runs, on 4 infield hits. Just bad breaks. But I think in the 2008 games he could be on the roster. Give him some time and experience. He has a future. His speed is in the upper 80's from the left side with trememendous sink and tail. He logged a lot of innings in a very tough juco league before signing to pro ball in 2002 although I think he should have pitched in college another year or two.
