Thee wins for the Jays affiliates but also three losses in close contests down on the farm.

Rochester 3, Syracuse 1

Former Jays farmhand Dave Gassner outdueled his good friend Cam Reimers in this match. The Skychiefs managed only one run on an RBI double off the bat of Howie Clark.

The score was tied 1-1 going into the seventh but the Red Wings scored two on a two-out double off of Reimers to take the lead for good. Anton French had three hits, Russ Adams singled and walked while Guillermo Quiroz had a double in four trips to the plate.

Game story

New Hampshire 6, Portland 1

A five run fifth inning blew things open for New Hampshire as they pulled out a win to maintain a two game lead in the standings over Binghamton. Chris Baker celebrated his birthday by throwing 8 solid innings allowing only a single runner to cross the plate while striking out 8. Jamie Vermilyea pitched a perfect ninth.

John-Ford Griffin and John Hattig both reached base 3 times, each with a double, a single and a walk.

Game story

Tampa 3, Dunedin 2

This one remained tied at 0-0 until a two run shot by Ron Davenport in the sixth inning. In total, Shaun Marcum tossed up 7 zeroes on the scoreboard allowing 4 hits, 1 walk and punching out 4. Marcum's K/BB rate in Dunedin now sits at 66/4.

However, the bullpen was unable to hold the Yankees down any longer as Andy Torres coughed up a run in the 8th and Bubbie Buzachero 2 more in the ninth for the blown save and the loss.

Box score

Charleston 6, Lakewood 3

Jermy Acey yielded the biggest stick as he drove in 3 with a single, double and a home run for the Alley Cats as they cruised to victory. Tom Mastny gave up 1 run on 5 hits, a walk and 7 punchouts but was pulled after the 4th inning.

Box score

Auburn 2, Vermont 3

7 different Doubledays had base hits but only Aaron Mathews was able to make it all the way back to home. He did so twice with a single and 3 walks. Chip Cannon also singled and walked twice.

Casey McKenzie tossed 4 shutout innings but in the end it was the defense that let Auburn down. 3B Vincent Esposito misplayed a bunt in the 5th that lead to 2 runs scoring. In the 9th, Esposito threw the ball away again on a grounder allowing the runner from 1st to score the winning run.

Box score

Pulaski 16, Bristol 4

This was a sloppy one featuring 7 errors, 3 by Bristol and 4 by the P-Jays. Pulaski was at least able to atone for its mistakes by drawing 10 walks and smacking out 14 hits including home runs by David Hicks and Jon Ashford.

Adrian Martin had the start, pitching 3+ innings allowing 3 runs, only 2 earned. Yesson Berroa allowed 1 run and struck out 4 in three innings while Joey Charron pitched the final two innings.

Box score

One other little stat in the Bush vs. Marcum comparison: Bush 7 W, 6 HBP, Marcum 4 W 3 HBP. Shaun's going to have plunk another couple in his next start to prove his mettle!

Something to mull over

Well it looks like Bush knows how to win and Marcum doesn't.
_Rob - Wednesday, August 25 2004 @ 12:05 PM EDT (#39670) #
I agree with Pistol. Winning games is more important than a low ERA, or preventing baserunners.

Of course, Bush leads in both those categories, making this post meaningless. Much like a Joe Morgan chat.

Seriously, though, I've been telling my dad that a 13-2 pitcher isn't always better than an 8-8 pitcher and he's coming around to the K/9, HR/9, and WHIP stuff. Another semi-conversion!

Well it looks like Bush knows how to win and Marcum doesn't

What's even odder about it is that Bush averaged 5.5 innings per start and picked up 7 wins in 14 tries; Marcum, on the other hand, is averaging 5.8 innings per start, yet has only 3 wins in 11 tries. So although Marcum is going deeper into games, he's got fewer W's to show for it. Just another reason why W-L record tells you next to nothing useful about a prospect.
Pistol - Wednesday, August 25 2004 @ 01:00 PM EDT (#39672) #
What, you don't think Bush inspired his teammates to hit better?
_Ryan01 - Wednesday, August 25 2004 @ 01:30 PM EDT (#39673) #
Of course Bush, by the same logic, loses more often than Marcum. Therefore it would follow that Shaun Marcum is a very indecisive person. This character flaw will likely hold him back as he will have trouble deciding which pitches to throw in the future. ;)
_Loveshack - Wednesday, August 25 2004 @ 01:41 PM EDT (#39674) #
Hold on now, would that mean that Bush is decisive whereas the other guy is a flip flopper? ;)
_Ryan Day - Wednesday, August 25 2004 @ 01:49 PM EDT (#39675) #
Of course Bush, by the same logic, loses more often than Marcum. Therefore it would follow that Shaun Marcum is a very indecisive person.

Don't be silly. What it means is that Bush is given to extreme emotions. Some days his teammates want to win for him. Other days, they hate his guts and want him to lose.

Clearly, Marcum's teammates are simply indifferent towards him. On some days, they may not even notice he's in the room. This suggests Marcum's future may be in the bullpen, where nobody ever notices you unless you screw up.
_Paul D - Wednesday, August 25 2004 @ 03:18 PM EDT (#39676) #
Can someone be both a proven winner and a proven loser?

While Marcum hasn't proven anything yet.
_Tassle - Wednesday, August 25 2004 @ 03:47 PM EDT (#39677) #
Do scouts even mention minor league W/L records in their reports? I would hope that 99% of scouts are past thinking they are important by now.
_Paul D - Wednesday, August 25 2004 @ 03:54 PM EDT (#39678) #
Is it Moneyball or and old Neyer column that listed some scouting reports?

As far as I remember scouts don't mention W/L record. They're too busy talking about the size of a guy's rump.
Pistol - Wednesday, August 25 2004 @ 04:02 PM EDT (#39679) #
Neyer did a column on that a couple days after the draft.
_Loveshack - Wednesday, August 25 2004 @ 04:10 PM EDT (#39680) #
Here's the Neyer report you're referring to I believe

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=neyer_rob&id=1818713

Pretty good stuff. I remember being here on the day of the draft and making the same observation. "High rear"? Why do I care about the vertical alignment of Player X's posterior? What does that tell me about how he pitches or how successful he has been or is likely to be in future?
_Tassle - Wednesday, August 25 2004 @ 04:27 PM EDT (#39681) #
Gah! Why isn't TBS showing the Braves game tonight? I really wanted to see Jeff Francis
_CaramonLS - Wednesday, August 25 2004 @ 04:53 PM EDT (#39682) #
So Randy Johnson is 12-11, but salary aside you wouldn't have him on your team?

Come on Pistol and Rob use your heads, wins aren't everything, especially in AAA, and you CANNOT take an 11 game sample size and make an accurate judgement.

Knowing how to win is one thing, stats and ERA can't tell you all of that, but judging someone on an 11 game sample size? Stupidity.
Craig B - Wednesday, August 25 2004 @ 04:57 PM EDT (#39683) #
I think Pistol and Rob are pulling your leg, Caramon.
_MatO - Wednesday, August 25 2004 @ 05:04 PM EDT (#39684) #
What's wrong with everyone? Marcum's walk total increases by 33% and not a peep or a degree of concern from anyone.
Pistol - Wednesday, August 25 2004 @ 05:25 PM EDT (#39685) #
I think Pistol and Rob are pulling your leg, Caramon

Correct.

I was partially doing it because Griffin was using wins as his stat of choice in his Towers article today.
_CaramonLS - Wednesday, August 25 2004 @ 06:19 PM EDT (#39686) #
Yeah, just realized that.

Anyone know why Mastny was pulled after 4 IP?
_Nigel - Wednesday, August 25 2004 @ 07:24 PM EDT (#39688) #
I haven't heard anything about Mastny but I think the playoffs begin in about a week or so. Its possible he was on a pitchcount to set him up for game 1 of the playoffs.
