With pitching coach Brad Arnsberg moving up to the big club from Triple-A and the departure of Rick Adair from Double-A New Hampshire to a position in the Rangers organization, the Jays had two important minor-league vacancies to fill. Once again, J.P. Ricciardi has attracted some talented individuals to his developmental team.

Chuck Kniffin, who takes over in Syracuse, has been working with the likes of Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson in Arizona the last two years. Here's a great 2002 profile of him by Paul Rubin of the Phoenix New Times.

The new Fisher Cats pitching coach is Dave LaRoche. The lefty, a two-time all-star in his 14-year major league career, is the father of Braves 1B Adam and Dodgers prospect Andy. He coached in the big leagues for five years with the Mets and White Sox, and has been at AAA Omaha in the Royals system the last three years. In 1987, Dave coached in Syracuse, so we welcome him back to the Toronto organization.

In other appointments, former D-backs hitting coach Dwayne Murphy, an OBP freak and graceful outfielder in his 12 big-league seasons, will be the new bench coach with the SkyChiefs, and veteran infielder John Valentin begins his coaching career as the new hitting instructor in Double-A. Best of luck to all of the new hires as they begin working with some outstanding prospects.

Small correction Coach, I assume Dwayne Murphy will be the hitting coach, and first base coach, in Syracuse, replacing Ken Landreaux. Most minor league teams carry three coaches, the manager coaches third base, the hitting instructor covers first, and the pitching coach watches the bullpen.

If the Jays run short of infielders John Valentin could be on standby ;-)

Don't laugh, Gerry. John Valentin hit very well in the Puerto Rican Winter League just last season.

John Valentin was an excellent example of a player who made the most of relatively modest ability. It seemed to me clear that he was a fine student of the game, and I am happy that he is in the Jays organization. Dwayne Murphy was a favorite of mine, and another classic example of the underrated ballplayer. Welcome to all the new coaches.

I read that Brantley was taking over for the Jays missing coaches spot., but have not seen any official announcement yet....or have I missed something?

Any news on who the coaching staff might be in Lansing? Would they bring the coaching staff from Chaleston or replace them? Just curious.

Ken Joyce, who was the manager in Charleston, will be the Lansing manager. I believe the rest of the staff is also unchanged.

Lansing Lugnuts (Midwest League - A)
Manager: Ken Joyce
Pitching Coach: Tom Bradley
Coach: Charles Poe

The Brantley notice was at the bottom of an article on the SLAM site a few weeks back, I showed it to Ryan (evasive description as to not pinpoint which one), so I know at least one other saw it.

You're probably right, Gerry. My information came from a Fisher Cats press release.

Jeff, I'm not sure what the delay is in announcing the new Toronto first base coach. Best guess? They have their man, but he's still under contract elsewhere.

Lugnut Fan, last year's skipper at Charleston, Ken Joyce, was recognized by the Jays organization with the Bobby Mattick Player Development Award. I'm assuming he'll make the move to Lansing, though it wouldn't be surprising to see him moving up the ladder in the near future. Tom Bradley (pitching) and Charlie Poe were the other Alley Cat coaches. The record suggests they did a fine job.

We interviewed Joyce in October when he was here to receive his award, so at some point during this long offseason, Bauxites will enjoy first-hand scouting reports on several Charleston players and some of the other SAL standouts.

Scooped again by Gerry. :)

H. Winfield, you're right. There was a one-line report that Mickey Brantley, formerly of the Mets, "would be named" 1B coach, but I haven't seen confirmation of that anywhere.

In addition to these coaching changes, Tom Signore was named pitching coach for Auburn. COMN.

Thanks for your input Gerry and coach. I agree it looks like they did a fine job with the team in Charleston judging by the record. Hopefully the success will carry over to Lansing and it should after reviewing the Auburn results from last year.

Coach, why do we see so little of you anymore

He needs blood... blood... blood...

It leaves very little time for the site.

How odd is it that this thread gets randomly bumped?
