After the holiday break, the winter leaguers returned to action. Ismael Ramirez got back on track with a solid start (5.2IP, 5 hits, 2 earned runs, 0 W, 3K).

Here are the season stats for the hitters:

Player PA BA/OBP/SLUG
Negron 121 .225/.352/.314
Cosby 100 .261/.320/.413
Quiroz 134 .237/.367/.474

Ismael Ramirez has pitched a solid 43.1 innings over the season, surrendering 36 hits including 2 homers and 9 walks, while striking out 38. Lee Gronkiewicz arrived late to Puerto Rico, but is pitching very well for Mayaguez, allowing only 3 hits and 3 intenional walks while striking out 5 in 7.1 innings. Ryan Glynn and Matt Whiteside are surviving in an extreme hitter's environment for Hermosillo in the Mexican League.

For those of us stuck in this weather experiment gone horribly awry, which we call Toronto, thoughts of ballgames in Mexico, Puerto Rico and Venezuela are just the tonic.

Winter League? It was 17 degrees today! 63 to those of you from the States and anyone born before 1972. ;) Of course, ice is now forming on my window...

I see Negron still has the Tingler Line going there. A .411 SLG in the FSL takes some power, so why the .314?

Quiroz has been sort of forgotten around here lately -- with Zaun signed and Myers sort-of-signed, I guess he's going back to the 'Cuse. Quiroz, Eric Crozier, Aaron Hill, Gabe Gross, J.R. Hattig. Not a bad lineup, prospects-wise.

I thought perhaps that home runs were harder to come by in Puerto Rico in 2004 than they were in 2003 (thinking of the Expos' experience in Hiram-Bithorn). There's no indication of that- the slugging leaders in the league are significantly over .500. One of them, Juan Velazquez, has a leg up in our scrabble context.

Anyways, I've got no ready explanation for Negron's slugging percentage. He started off hitting well, but has faded badly. He has obviously taking many more pitches than formerly, and perhaps he is having some difficulty in adapting to a new batting approach.

Lee Gronkiewicz? Ismael Ramirez? Juan Velazquez? Guillermo Quiroz? Talk about your prime territory for the All-Scrabble Team!

Zulia (GQ's club) does not seem to have returned to action since the new year. Jabonoso, if you're there, I've tried to through the club and league website to find out what the schedule is, but perhaps my Spanish abilities are inadequate for Web navigation. Can you help and find out when Zulia will play again?

Hi Mike,
In January the tournament is like the equivalent of post season, some teams have been eliminated already, like Zulia. Caribes ( Ismael team) is fighting with the rich teams ( like Lara and Caracas )to win it all. Ismael is not starting anymore, he may be tired and certainly is not experimented enough for decisive games.
He did pitch with poise and efectivenness. Look for a solid season in AA.
Hermosillo has been eliminated in the Mexican league. Now there are only four teams: Culiacan, Mazatlan, Mochis and Tijuana.
Hermosillo, Culiacan and Mochis are the only hitters parks in the league. It is a strech to call it a extreme hitters environment. It is sea level. The richer teams like Hermosillo and Culiacan particularly have very good lineups. Mazatlan has a very good pitching staff with too light hitting and may be the champ and host the caribe series at home.
Rob, 17 degrees sound a bit cool to me. Average for games weather is 22 oC.
