Ah, lunch time on Monday, possibly the dreariest time at work except for maybe 9:00 am on Monday. But today we have baseball to cheer us up...

Sadly, the Jays are not broadcasting today's game. If anyone sniffs out a working Indians feed, please share it.

From the life-is-hard department:

I left my baseball radio at work over the weekend, because I didn't think I'd be using it for anything. The person who works for me on Saturday also happens to be my father, and he enjoyed my radio...right up until he broke the crank, and now it can't be charged up anymore.

For those who've heard the stories of my father before, this should come as no surprise -- this is the same man who once ruined my airbrush by stripping a screw on it he shouldn't have been trying to turn in the first place and then drilled a hole in the brush to remove the screw. He was shocked when paint sprayed out of the hole he had drilled.

This is a sad day -- I had hoped that this baseball radio would be a part of my young family the way my dad's radio was part of ours. Unless my surgery this afternoon proves successful, I may be finding a new baseball radio.

*sigh*

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! NOT THE RADIO!!!

It was a fine radio. It was a good radio. It did much for us, and asked little in return. And now, like so many before it, it has left us far too soon.

Surely you can find a similar radio somewhere, NFH. Surely there must be some way to preserve the memory of ol'... radio...ee.

But on a related note - being entirely blind to today's game is quite a letdown considering how pumped I was after yesterday's full broadcast and extendo-jays talk. It felt like the regular season, it did.

When is the next radio broadcast?

I can get another one for $50, but still...

Post-mortem indicates that the gear that drives the dynamo has broken a tooth.

Tomorrow's game will be broadcast on bluejays.com, though I don't think it'll be Tom and Jerry calling it.

MLB.com Game Day Audio has it listed under WTAM from Cleveland. I'm going to listen to it there while at work.

http://www.wtam.com/listen_live.html is the official live stream for their radio station, but it looks like they black the game out. Hey, for $15 I bought a year of MLB audio for days like this!

heh guys,

i'm looking for the blue jays 2005 preview. i'm very interested to read how the "new and improved" jays are perceived throughout the baseball ranks?

My thoughts on this season are as follows: I'll work my way through each position.

Catcher: This year Zaun will get the majority of minutes earlier on. Once their "future" arrives with Quiroz his and Crash's minutes will diminish. Quiroz apparently is a STUD with the bat. Plus defensively he's got a cannon for an arm. Can't wait to see it!

1 bag: Hinske i think will bounce back offensively. He's definitely got the tools and know how to have a productive year. Shea will give him a much needed breather a couple of days a week... which will be good. Defensively i can see Hinske being an upgrade over Delgado. I'm sure he'll have a little more range... and since he'll have to throw the ball a lot less this year, his arm won't be an issue. Not sure if anyone remembered or not, but, he was VERY SOLID defensively last year.

2 bag: What can i say about O-Dog. He is a stud defensively, and this year he will hit .300 I can also see him swipe between 15 & 25 bags. With Gibbons being forced to create runs this year, as opposed to waiting for the round tripper a lot of his regulars will steal more often. (They'll have to!!!)

SS: This will be their toughest position. The rook (Russ Adams) will no doubt make his mistakes in the field. But, he'll have to play through the blunders to get better. As long as he limits his mistakes throughout the year he'll be fine. I can see him hitting some where around .260 this year. Hopefully 15 or so SB's.

3 bag: Koskie should and most likely will have an outstanding year! He is one of the best 3rd baseman in the majors defensively. His "goalie" first mentality (block the ball) pick it up and throw him out style is a style any ball fan loves! I know i do. He'll also be an upgrade over Hinske with the bat. I'll be surprised to see him hit less than .280 with 25-30hr's. His RBI's should be slightly over 100 as well.

OF's Starting with Rios. This kid really excites me. He definitely is a 5 tool type player. This year i predict he will show us some of the power he is capable of. 10-20hr's. Defensively he's got a gun in RF. Plus, tonnes of range. Awesome to watch daily!

VW-- All i'm gonna say about this guy is:
.300+ 25HR, 20SB 130RBI's
He's our best player!

Catman, Reed, and Gabe will see their share of work. With the majority going to both Catalanotto and Johnson. Gross will be a valuable guy coming off the bench in the late innings... speed, and a decent bat!

Pitching: Doc, Lilly, Batista, Bush, and probably Towers starting seems pretty good to me. Hopefully by the Trade deadline J.P. can upgrade this group. No surprise here... but, i can see League, Frasor, and Arnold having huge huge years! These guys can flat out pitch! I'm thinking Brandon League will the closer by July. No offense to Justin Speier who i think will be a decent closer (has the makeup) but, this League kid throws seed after seed. Plus, he just looks like a closer! Being a former player myself this can be intimidating!
Also, i want to mention the year Doc will have. He can and will bounce back from his disapointing year last year. (health wise) I'm predicting 17-22 wins with an ERA around 3.50 Based on his 1st start it sounded like he had good "zipp" on his FB and sinker. This is great news for BJ fans!!!

Manager: I'm excited to really see what Gibbons style will be... i'm thinking 1 or 2 hit and runs per game... with also loosening the leashes a little bit with the quicker runners on the team. i hope he also doesn't remain to loyal with the pitchers when they begin to struggle. ( A la Cito) His mentality should be 1 game at a time. (i know mine would be!) Do what you have to do to win the game your playing! With protecting your pitchers arms obviously...

GM: J.P. now that you have the semi-vault at your disposal i hope you just don't jump at a big name! Please please please stick to your game plan. Which is build from within. The pitchers we have in our organization now right from Rookie ball all the way up to T.O. are just sick! Teams will come calling for some of these arms. This will be JP's ace in the hole! And he knows it.

My .02

Interested to see what you guys think!?

Laloosh.

ecnl, our Jays preview will be the last (I think) of the previews posted -- we're doing one team a day, which means the Jays are still a couple of weeks away.

I found a working Cleveland radio feed, but the sports update said that the game against the Jays (they said the "Tribe at Toronto", which is the opposite of what bluejays.com said) was tonight at 7:00.

Can someone with gameday confirm/deny?

I personally don't under why Hinske is playing first base. They need him to turn around his offense and pick up some of the offense slack without Delgado around. I fear that learning a new position will distract him at the plate.

Why not DH him for the first few months of the season? Let him straighten out his bat while Shea Hillenbrand plays first base. After he starts hitting, then ease him into the field.

As it stands right now, they're setting him up for failure. I wouldn't be surprised to see him hitting .230 come June and get shifted to the bench with Shea at first, Johnson in LF and Cat at DH.

If the Jays were trying to light a fire under him by making a roster that excluded him for the start of the season, it sure worked.

John-Ford Griffin the left fielder up. looks at a strike. fouls one back, 0-2. up and in for a ball, 1-2. Breaking ball outside, 2-2. Offspeed down low to run the count full. Hattig goes, and Griffin fouls it off. 76 degrees out and 'delightful'. Hattig runs again and Griffin foul tips it at the plate. Griffin fouls another back to the screen. Top 2nd: New Indians pitcher David Riske. Tough first outing for Millwood, who threw 37 pitches. MacDonald flies out to center on the first pitch, bringing up Alex Rios the DH. takes low and away ball 1. At the knees for a strike, 1-1. Low, 2-1. takes one wide and its 3-1. fouled back, full count. Payoff pitch fouled back over the roof and its still 3-2. Riske steps off. 3-2 split change in the dirt, walking Rios.

Is there anyway that Gabe Gross can be put on the opening day roster? I guess it would have to be a trade of either Cat or Hinkske.

Not at all - they'd merely need to cut someone or keep them at AAA - the most likely candidate at this point being Koch.

Wow, Gross is seriously impressing me so far this spring. He's mashing the ball AND working the count by drawing walks. He's going to force the Jays hand soon if he keeps this up, IMO.

GO JAYS!!!

P.S. And thank you so much for the play-by-play! You're awesome
Mike Green - Monday, March 07 2005 @ 01:55 PM EST (#104940) #
Technically, Gross could end up on the opening day roster without any trades being made, if the team went with an 11 man pitching staff. The team would have to use Hillenbrand at first, third and as a part-time DH. He'd get maybe 400-450 ABs, as would Cat. Stranger things have happened...

Jose Hernandez looks at strike 1. check swing went too far and the count is 0-2. looped high in the air to shallow right, Gross makes the grab for the final out. We've played 2 and its still 5-0 Jays.
Scott Levy - Monday, March 07 2005 @ 01:58 PM EST (#104945) #
Gross really has nothing more to prove in AAA. He is a notorious slow starter, and considering the Jays current position, they would be much better off giving Gross 400 AB's this year than Hillenbrand, Cat, or Hinske. If Gross does make the team out of spring training, it has to be with a full-time role, otherwise you are just letting him waste away on the bench.

JP won't be trading his Hatteberg (Cat), and his newly acquired player Hillenbrand. That just leaves Hinske. If Hinske isn't traded, keep Gross in AAA. I want him up, but not as a bench player.
kpataky - Monday, March 07 2005 @ 02:01 PM EST (#104946) #
Top 3rd: Bob Wickman the new Indians pitcher. John-Ford Griffin takes it inside, ball 1. Chopper up the middle, Cora with a nice bh stab, leap in the air, throws to first to rob JFG of a hit. Nice stretch by the 1st baseman. Huckaby fouls it off, 0-1. Grounds out to second.
kpataky - Monday, March 07 2005 @ 02:03 PM EST (#104947) #
Negron watches the count go to 2-0. Strike on inside corner. Strike on the corner again and its 2-2. Breaking ball strike 3 called. Wickman gets em 1-2-3. We go to the bottom of the third!
Andrew K - Monday, March 07 2005 @ 02:06 PM EST (#104948) #
I know that JP likes Cat, but he's ideal trade bait -- signed for a reasonable contract, high BA. And he's expressed a desire to play in New York.

I like Cat, too, and apparantly he is good in the clubhouse, but he might be very good trade value. Maybe in June, with Gross coming up for good and having a chance to get over his promotion slump this year, ready for next year. I'd rather trade Cat than Gross.
kpataky - Monday, March 07 2005 @ 02:07 PM EST (#104949) #
Bottom 3rd: Gaudan the pitcher. John Rodriguez steps in watches the count go to 1-1. Temp hovering near 80 degrees lots of blue sky. Ball inside, 2-1. Takes outside, 3-1. Splitter down low. Strike at the knees called as Rodriguez throws the bat away and the crowd boos. Full Count. Laced in the hole, Hinske with a back handed stab, throws to Gaudan covering for the out at first.

Let's try some Kurkjian math, shall we? If Gross hits three Homeruns in four Spring Training games, then that means, in the regular season, he will hit ... carry the one ... 19,000 HRs! How can we lose?!!

Well, let's take it a bit more logically - he's had three plate appearances, and each one has resulted in a homerun.

Thus, if we make him a full-time player, we can expect him to get about 650 plate appearances.

Thus, about 650 plate appearances in the whole season gives him that many home runs, or up to 2,600 RBI, more than the Jays scored all of last year.

It's a safe bet, I'd say.

I'm not sure why people keep saying that Gross has nothing left to prove at triple-A. Are you telling me only nine home runs is acceptable from a corner outfielder in the big leagues? Not to mention he only hit .209 in 129 big league at bats. The power this spring is nice to see but it is ONLY Spring Training. Lots of players do well against the cripple pitchers in the spring and struggle once the regular season starts. I don't think it would be a bad thing at all to see Gross start the season in triple-A and prove that he can provide consistent power and good plate discipline. Having him wasting away on the bench would be a bad idea.

Top 6th: New Indians pitcher Jeremy Guthrie. Dusty Wathan catching Franklin Gutierrez in center. John-Ford Griffin taps back to the mound for an easy out.

Huckaby takes low and inside ball 1. Lifted high in the air to Young who crashes into the wall in foul territory down the right field line by the bullpen for an amazing catch.

Weak roller to second by Negron, thrown out on a close play at first by Cora. Middle of the 6th, still 5-1 Jays.

Quiroz catching. Alfiro at third. Anton French in left. Gabe Gross moves to center. Right Fielder we think is Raul Tablado. Travis Hafner the batter.

Sorry, Kevin. I meant Rios had flown to the track three times so far this spring. I guess twice today makes it four. I like that.
kpataky - Monday, March 07 2005 @ 02:44 PM EST (#104978) #
Hafner watches the count go to 2-2. (We are told Singleton is in center and Anthony Sanders is in right) Hafner stays alive with a foul tip in and out of the glove of Quiroz. Swings thru an inside pitch to whiff.
Mike Green - Monday, March 07 2005 @ 02:46 PM EST (#104979) #
Marc, you're right. It is early. But, Crain and Millwood are not cripple pitchers. They may be working the kinks out, but they're fine major league pitchers.

Gross has had 559 triple A at-bats. He's hit .284 with 45 doubles, 4 triples and 14 homers and 84 walks. Sure it would be better if 10 of those doubles were homers, but it's not chopped liver either.
kpataky - Monday, March 07 2005 @ 02:46 PM EST (#104980) #
Gutierrez absolutely crushes one off the wall in left for a double, Cora stops at third. Young drilled with a fastball baring in to load the bases.
kpataky - Monday, March 07 2005 @ 02:48 PM EST (#104981) #
Abad the lefty hitting first baseman hits an easy inning ending DP to MacDonald at second who boots it for his second error of the game. Cora scores making it 5-2. Bases remain loaded. Credit Abad with an RBI.
Ducey - Monday, March 07 2005 @ 02:49 PM EST (#104982) #
I agree with Marc re: Gross.

You can't make a lot of decisions based on spring training. A lot of the pitchers are not even locating their breaking balls yet. Send him down to AAA. If he stays hot, you have a nice problem and can trade Shea or Cat near the all star break. Gross would then come up with lots of confidence. He will also serve as valuable depth in the event of an injury.
kpataky - Monday, March 07 2005 @ 02:49 PM EST (#104983) #
Rodriguez swings and misses at a ball in the dirt to whiff. Bases still loaded.
Pistol - Monday, March 07 2005 @ 02:49 PM EST (#104984) #

I'm not sure why people keep saying that Gross has nothing left to prove at triple-A.

He hit .380/.456 in 2003 and .381/.454 in 2004.

It's not the worse thing to have him in Syracuse for a few months this year, but I think he'll be a better player for the Jays than either Cat, Hinske or Hillenbrand this year.

rtcaino - Monday, March 07 2005 @ 02:50 PM EST (#104985) #
""I like Cat, too, and apparantly he is good in the clubhouse, but he might be very good trade value. Maybe in June, with Gross coming up for good and having a chance to get over his promotion slump this year, ready for next year. I'd rather trade Cat than Gross.""

It seems one of Gross, SH, Hinske or Cat will be traded. Of all of them, I'd want to keep Gross. But then again, of the four Gross would have the most value.
kpataky - Monday, March 07 2005 @ 02:51 PM EST (#104986) #
Slider low and away swung through. Fastball inside evens the count 1-1. Check swing blooper towards third over the leap of Alfiro into left for a single, plating 1. 5-3 Jays bases still loaded.

Peralta takes low ball 1. Drilled foul down the right side, 1-1. Swing and a miss at a high fastball, 1 ball 2 strikes. Chopper to third, throws to second for the force ending the threat. End of 6 innings, 5-3 Jays.

Top 7th: Guthrie pitches to Adams, fouled back, count is 0-2. (Adams tripled in the first and scored) In the dirt, count is 1-2. Fouled down the left side. Down low, 2-2. Pitch up high to load the count. Payoff pitch, Adams grounds out to Abad at first unassisted.

First pitch to MacDonald down low 1-0. Up high, 2-0. Up near his noggin, 3-0. Fastball right down Broadway, 3-1. In the dirt and he walked him.
kpataky - Monday, March 07 2005 @ 02:59 PM EST (#104991) #
Rios looks at one low, 1-0. Swing and a miss, 1-1. Guthrie's throw to first is in the dirt, dug out nicely by Abad on a very close play. Breaking ball lined into center for a single. MacDonald stops at 2nd.
kpataky - Monday, March 07 2005 @ 03:01 PM EST (#104992) #
Hinske looks at a fastball outside at the knees for a strike. Looks at a breaking ball outside 1-1. In the dirt to the backstop, both runners advance on the wild pitch. Pitch outside, 3-1. Infield is in. Hinkse checks his swing, called a ball for a walk loading the bases. Matos runs for Hinske.
Gitz - Monday, March 07 2005 @ 03:03 PM EST (#104993) #
It seems one of Gross, SH, Hinske or Cat will be traded. Of all of them, I'd want to keep Gross. But then again, of the four Gross would have the most value.

Nope. F-Cat and Shea, i.e. proven .300 hitters, have far more value to most major-league GMs, and one would assume the Blue Jays will extract some value from teams needing a "hitter" at the all-star break.

Gross, if traded, probably will be a left-handed Jason Werth with more walks. (And, no, that assessment has nothing to do with his three home runs so far.)

kpataky - Monday, March 07 2005 @ 03:04 PM EST (#104994) #
Anthony Sanders looks at ball 1 low. Big rip and a miss, 1-1. Infield at double play depth. Another big rip at a hook and a miss, 2-2. Breaking ball hangs up high. Fouls a fastball back to the screen. Another breaking ball fouled back to the screen. Swing and a miss strike 3.
kpataky - Monday, March 07 2005 @ 03:07 PM EST (#104995) #
Alfiro watches the count go to 2-0. Fouled back to the screen. Swing and a miss at a high fastball evening the count at 2. Curve hit high and foul. Inside fastball loads the count. Breaking ball hit to third, thrown to first for the out. Middle of 7, 5-3 Jays.
kpataky - Monday, March 07 2005 @ 03:11 PM EST (#104996) #
Bottom 7th: Michael Nannini pitching for the Jays. Matos at first. Bryant Nelson at 2nd. Tablado at short. Wathan lines a single to center.

Morbon, batting left handed, watches the count even at 2. Fouled off. Chopped between 1st and 2nd for a single. Wathan stops at 2nd.

Hafner grounds into a 3-6-1 DP as Wathan goes to third.
kpataky - Monday, March 07 2005 @ 03:19 PM EST (#104998) #
Gutierrez watches the count go full before spanking one to deep left center field. French dives and gets leather on it, but can't pull it in. Wathan scores as Gutierrez pulls in with a double. Grounder to third, Alfiro backhands it and makes the long throw to first, pulling Matos off the bag. Matos recovers in time to slap the tag on for the third out ending the 7th with the score now 5-4 Jays.

Kevin Kouzmanoff (A-ball hitter headed to AA) just smoked a mammoth HR off Perkins to dead center, the Indians announcers estimated "over 430 feet". It came on a 3-0 pitch.

Bryant Nelson hits an opposite-field single, there will be a PH for Rios, and it sounds as if the Tribe announcers have packed it in. I heard a "Who knows" off mic, and then the line went dead.

We'll have more when the feed is restored.

The PBP man sounded utterly dejected when Tablado (who'd already missed with a home run swing) connected with his three-run shot.

One thing I noticed is that you've invested in the Reds, albeit with good players, but what are the chances of all three doing well?

Sleepers....any of the new, young A's pitchers (Haren), Luis Ayala of the Nats (6-12, 2.69 era [2.30 minus April], 1.18 whip), Chris Young (Rangers), Jason lane, Cliff Lee, Paul Byrd (who pitched well last year), Runelvys Hernandez, maybe Kip Wells (he's probably taken, but he didn't pitch well after coming back from his injury last year, so he may be available)
CaramonLS - Monday, March 07 2005 @ 07:30 PM EST (#105052) #
Yeah I realize I'm stacked with Reds. Willy Mo was a 16th round steal, not to mention a great backup if anything happens to Kearns. Giambi was also 15th round.

The Hernandez one seems really interesting, might pick him up later in the season i'll keep an eye out.

Everyone else (cept young) was taken on that list btw.

As one of those guys who likes to watch baseball but isn't concerned with following other specific non-Jays teams, I'm really happy with a digital bundle that includes all four Sportsnet feeds -- there's a game on virtually every night of the season, often two or three, or at least there were last year. Here's hoping they've got more of the same lined up for us this year.

I was happy to see the promos last night during Sportsnet news for Thursday night's telecast, and when I came here to share the news I found I had been scooped by gv27.

I wonder how he found out about it before you...haha

Actually someone posted the Sporsnet Baseball schedule for April yesterday before gv.

You're right, Braby21. Admittedly, I did have the advantage on Hank. My best friend has a cousin who has a sister-in-law who has a Bridge partner who works at Sportsnet!

gv27 just proved that it's possible to be six degrees of seperation apart from yourself. :)

I'm my mother's brother's father's grandson!

Yes, but are you related to Pepper Martin?
