With yesterday's game being rained out, is this game seven or game eight? I say seven, but I'm happy to be corrected by baseball traditionalists.

Tonight's game is the first we'll see of our Fightin' Jays on television in 2005, on Rogers Sportsnet and mlb.tv (for free) tonight at 7:15.

The bad news is that we won't be seeing our new play-by-play man or any of his rumored co-hosts tonight; Sportsnet is picking up the YES Network feed. At least that could lead to some unintentional hilarity, like the time the Yankee broadcasters made fun of Josh Phelps for not having a "baseball name", only to watch him cream the Yankees pitching staff throughout the game.

The game is on the Fan as well, so you can hit mute on the TV and dial up Tom, Jerry and Mike if the YES-men start to get to you.

Tonight also presents a bizarro-world scenario, fresh from my dreams: the Jays are in first place, and the Yanks are in last. Sure, it's Spring Training, and we all know that Spring Training Games Don't Mean Anything, but doesn't it feel good?

Maybe we'll get some answers tonight, if we're facing a Yankee team full of the leftovers from their farm system or guys we've never heard of or season ticket holders or something, then we'll know that their languishing at the bottom of the standings is just an illusion.

I'm hoping that tonight's tilt will be in high definition -- Rogers' commitment to hi-def is impressive, with all of the Jays home games being broadcast that way, and I imagine that they'd pick up hi-def feeds of away games whenever and wherever possible. In this case, it's up to YES; I guess we'll find out tonight if they rented a hi-def setup or trucked one down just for this game.

I can't recall what the Yankees' Spring Training home field looks like, but I'd be shocked if the lighting were as good as at the Rogers Centre. A big part of why the Jays games look so damn good on Sportsnet is that killer lighting in there. I know, I rave about this stuff too often -- but am I the only one here who has merged his love of home theatre and baseball?

Having just upgraded my speakers after a decade with the last ones (and I'm in the middle of breaking them in -- there's nothing like cranking up the stereo every morning before you leave the house), I'm going to take this opportunity to ask Rogers to do something about the live sound from the Dome.

The picture looks great. The broadcasts are slick without being overly showy or flashy, which is just how I like 'em. I think we're really spoiled by the coverage delivered by the Sportsnet team, and so I'm a little hesitant to mention what I see as a real flaw in it because I don't want to seem ungrateful. But what we're getting in terms of sound just isn't up to the level of the rest of it. I don't think it's due to incompetence or negligence; rather, I think that we're still getting a sound mix designed to be clear and recognizable through a tinny speaker on a small television. And that's fair, but when you're putting out a broadcast designed to look great on a gigantic, high quality screen (and does it ever look good), shouldn't the sound match up with that? I understand that the crazy acoustics at the Rogers Centre probably add another obstacle, and the frequently tiny crowds are surely hard to mic.

I'm not a sound expert, at least, not any further than setting up a killer home theatre, and I can't give any advice or lend any problem-solving skills to Rogers. And if the sound stays the same I'll still be watching. But with an upgrade to the sound to bring it up to the level of the glorious picture being delivered to us would elevate the Sportsnet coverage from just great to genuinely amazing.

Of course, the problem with making the broadcasts perfect is that we'll all stay home and watch them instead of going to the park.

Towers is starting, with Chacin coming in after a couple of innings.

According to Wilner on the Fan, both will be in the rotation come April, and Batista will be the closer. Thanks to James W for the info.
BCMike - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 06:07 PM EST (#105457) #

According to Wilner on the Fan, Batista has been named closer and Chacin will take his spot in the rotation. How's that for news?

Also, TSN announced their broadcast schedule 42 games this year, unfortunately that's 42 games with Rod Black. Sportsnet also confirmed their colour guys... Tom Candiotti, Pat Tabler, Rance Mulliniks and Darrin Fletcher.

Rob - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 06:10 PM EST (#105458) #
Please tell me that isn't true. Towers is fine as the No. 5 guy, but both him and Chacin in the rotation at the same time? And Batista back in the bullpen?

Wilner, come on. That's a joke, right?
BCMike - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 06:14 PM EST (#105460) #
I wonder if it has to do with the Jays not having confidence in Batista as a starter for the entire year, or if Chacin has forced his way into the rotation. I'm guessing the former.
Useless Tyler - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 06:23 PM EST (#105461) #
I thought it was set that Speier was going to be the closer.
What's the source on this?

Who is going down if we're bringing Chacin up then?
Fawaz - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 06:25 PM EST (#105462) #
There was one bullpen spot left, so nobody's going down.
brels - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 06:34 PM EST (#105463) #
Just want to add, I heard Wilner on the Fan too...same story on Batista as the closer.

Should make for some interesting 9th's!!

The game is on Sportsnet Pacific! Yahoo.
WJM - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 06:45 PM EST (#105465) #
Anyone have lineups for tonight? Thanks
Jobu - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 06:49 PM EST (#105466) #
Best of luck to Batista, but I want him to know this completely ruins my "draft Speier with the last pick in all my fantasy drafts" strategy.
JackFoley - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 06:55 PM EST (#105467) #
Beisbol on TV makes me wanna scream!

I for one like smart Miggy as the closer, mostly because I'm convinced that Chacin can handle a starting role now.

Anders - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:09 PM EST (#105468) #
This news about Batista is puzzling. Clearly he is not cut out to be a closer. He walks wayyy too many people, which is not what you want out of a closer. He doesnt strike out anyone either.

Unless theyre going to limit him to 2 pitches, which they think will solve the problem.
King Ryan - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:17 PM EST (#105469) #
Jays Lineup:

LF Catalanotto

SS Adams

I turned on YES network right at 7 and I must say that I am HYPED! I know it's only spring training, but the Jays at Legends Field, under the lights...

AHHHH!!!

And I'm glad that Batista was named closer, I really like that move. First time watching the Jays this season! Is it weird to be excited?!?
VBF - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:18 PM EST (#105471) #
I'm not as upset about Batista being the closer as I am Justin Speier not being the closer. He had a good second half last year. Batista, statistically had a perfect closing record last year but we all know what kind of games four of them were.

At least let the closer's role be Speier's to lose. Not to mention that our rotation looks a little emptier (just what I feel) now. I am a supporter of Chacin but I would rather have one or the other, not both. There's too much room for error this way. Instead of having a good chance of getting quality out of a closer, and a decent 1-4 in the rotation, I feel that we have a huge question mark at closer now, and a solid 1-3 rotation.

Also to note that the Yankees are going full out with all their starters tonight.
Brent S - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:22 PM EST (#105472) #
So Aaron, is it on HDTV tonight?
Flex - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:22 PM EST (#105473) #
Just tuned into the game on the radio (I think the MLB TV video is only free if you buy a subscription).

Did Ricciardi say anything in the first half inning about the closer switcheroo?
edtjeerd - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:23 PM EST (#105474) #
Any updates for those of us without access to t.v./radio?
King Ryan - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:28 PM EST (#105475) #
Jays went 1-2-3 in the first. In the bottom, Jeter led things off with an infield single up the middle, A-Rod Grounds out to Koskie(nice throw,) but Sheff scores Jeter with a basehit. Giambi lines out to Rios. Posada hits one up the middle, but it was snared by a diving Adams. Great play.

1-0 NYY after one.
Flex - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:30 PM EST (#105476) #
'Kay, i just heard the answer to my question. Batista as closer makes the team better, says JP. He's a guy who's better off doing more throwing and less thinking.

And the bullpen is now full of guys with "thump."
Brent S - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:30 PM EST (#105477) #
I'd like to see a replay of that Adams snag. He made a nice play to get to his left hand side, although the underhand toss to Hudson looked a bit late to catch the hustling Sheffield.
VBF - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:31 PM EST (#105478) #
Riccardi noted the decision to move Batista to the closer spot. He basically said it was a no brainer with no controversy. And obviously, Towers will remain 5th starter and Chacin will become 4th.

Koskie with leadoff double.

kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:34 PM EST (#105484) #
Rios one hopper to third, Koskie nailed at plate.
DaveInNYC - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:34 PM EST (#105485) #
Nice piece of hitting by Hillenbrand. Takes the outside corner fastball the other way and moves Koskie over to 3rd base with 1 out.

Runner on 3rd, 1 out... this team was horrible at this last year.

Rios grounds out to 3rd, A-Rod guns home and Koskie is TOAST!
King Ryan - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:35 PM EST (#105486) #
Koskie advanced to third on a Shea groundout. Rios grounded to third, and A-Rod threw it home to catch Koskie for a FC.
DaveInNYC - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:36 PM EST (#105487) #
Should mention the pitch to Hillenbrand was a breaking ball.

Kevin, it's all yours if you want it. ;)
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:38 PM EST (#105488) #
Zaun takes low inside for a ball. Looks at another fastball low for a strike, 1-1. Fouls one back as Rios was running and has to return to 1st. Zaun lashes a low inside breaking ball foul down first. Grounds out slowly to second to end the inning. Middle of the 2nd, 1-0 Yanks
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:40 PM EST (#105489) #
Bottom of the 2nd: Michael Kay was talking about Justin Singleton making the trip over and how his Dad works for YES and he's hoping Justin gets in the game. Matsui flies out to center on the first pitch.
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:41 PM EST (#105490) #
Bernie Williams smokes the first pitch over the leap of Gross near the rf corner for a double.
CeeBee - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:42 PM EST (#105491) #
As for Batista being the closer it probably won't take too many bad outings by either Batista, Towers, or Chacin for something to change. If nothing changes with the 3 of them then I suspect we would be in for a pretty good season. :)
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:42 PM EST (#105492) #
Martinez takes a fastball inside for a ball. Looks at a low breaking ball for a strike, 1-1. Loops out to Adams behind second.
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:44 PM EST (#105493) #
Womack loops out to Koskie on the grass behind 3rd. End of 2, 1-0 Yanks.
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:47 PM EST (#105494) #
Top 3rd: Gross takes a breaking ball for strike. Fouls one off. Looks at a fastball outside. Flied out to right on an inside fastball.
VBF - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:48 PM EST (#105495) #
I'd agree with your CeeBee, but the last thing the Jays need is to learn their lesson on Opening Day much less the rest of April. I fear that the Jays are setting themselves up for disaster which is the last thing they need. At least make the change later into the season if there's any inital problem with Speier.
DaveInNYC - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:48 PM EST (#105496) #
Either the wind is blowing out (and it is chilly out there) or Gabe has gotten a bit stronger over the off-season. He seemed to get jammed on that pitch from Mussina, and yet he still nearly hit it to the warning track.

Either way, it's great to see him hitting the ball so well.
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:49 PM EST (#105497) #
Adams singles up the middle on a 2-2 pitch.
Pete Warren - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:49 PM EST (#105498) #
Hello again Bauxites. My first post on the new and improved site.

Nice to see the Jays on television in primetime. Is it just me or have the last few days had the most positive Jays buzz (for spring training) in a while?
CaramonLS - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:50 PM EST (#105499) #
Announcer: Pavano talked to Tanyon Sturtze about his splitter.

Welp I guess I wont be making any deals for Pavano on my fantasy team.
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:50 PM EST (#105500) #
Catalanotto flies out to Williams deep in center.
DaveInNYC - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:50 PM EST (#105501) #
Pete, I was thinking about that today as well. I don't know if it's just me, but I have this great feeling about the Jays this season... as if they could surprise some people this season and possibly even sneak into the playoffs! I know it's probably just wishful thinking, but I know what you mean Pete about the positive buzz.

kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:52 PM EST (#105502) #
Adams steals second on a low outside breaking ball that Posada didn;t field cleanly, and didnt make a throw. Hudson high chops out back to Mussina on the mound on the next pitch.
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:53 PM EST (#105503) #
Middle of the 3rd, still 1-0 Yankees.
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:55 PM EST (#105504) #
Bottom 3rd: Jeter looks at a high fastball for a strike. grounds to short, Adams throw was high and offline pulling Hillenbrand off for an error as Jeter is safe.
DaveInNYC - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:56 PM EST (#105505) #
Wow, Adams with a poor throw that takes Hillenbrand off the bag resulting in an error. Jeter was jogging on the play, any other player would have gotten roasted by the announcers.
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:57 PM EST (#105506) #
Rodriguez looks at one low and outside for a ball. Next one right over the plate for a strike. Looks at a fastball on the outside corner for a strike, 1-2. Looks at a fastball right over the plate to whiff.
King Ryan - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:59 PM EST (#105507) #
I missed the error in question, but otherwise Adams looks goood.
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 07:59 PM EST (#105508) #
Sheffield looks at a breaking ball for a strike. Low for a ball. Smash to bh Adams in the hole, who makes a nice grabe and throws to Hudson to force Jeter out at second.
DaveInNYC - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:00 PM EST (#105509) #
Sheff hits one hard to short and Adams makes another nice play, with a dive to his right in the hole and flipping it to Hudson to get Jeter at 2nd. 2 outs.

It's weird with Adams, he's got good athleticism, very good range, soft hands... just weird mechanics on his throw when it comes to the routine plays.

Hopefully Butterfield will straighten that out.
CaramonLS - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:02 PM EST (#105510) #
O-Dog proves again why Boone stole a GG from him.
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:02 PM EST (#105511) #
Giambi watches the count even at 1-1. Low for a ball. Lashes a one hopper than Hudson snares on the grass and throws him out from his knees. End of 3, 1-0 Yanks.
DaveInNYC - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:02 PM EST (#105512) #
Holy crap! An OUTSTANDING PLAY by Orlando Hudson!! Giambi scorched one, a one hopper to 2nd, and Hudson made a dive to his right and completed the play with a throw to first from his knees.

If Adams can work out his throwing woes on routine plays, this infield is going to be sick!
Dr. Zarco - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:04 PM EST (#105513) #
Two great plays that half inning. Hudson never surprises me. If Adams can straighten out his throw, that'll be pretty good up the middle defense.
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:04 PM EST (#105514) #
Top of the 4th: Pavano pitching.

Wells flies out to Sheffield in right center.
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:05 PM EST (#105516) #
Koskie looks like a wrinkler over the plate for strike one. Low outside change for a ball. Flied out to left.
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:07 PM EST (#105517) #
Jays: Zaun catching, Hillenbrand 1st, Hudson 2nd, Adams SS, Koskie 3B, Cat in left, Wells in center, Gross in right, Rios DH
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:08 PM EST (#105518) #
Hillenbrand reaches out and flicks a double off the left field wall.
DaveInNYC - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:09 PM EST (#105519) #
Nice display of power there by Shea as he takes a breaking ball down and away and one arms it off the left field wall. I actually thought it was gone in left, as the ball blended in with the white advertisement on the wall.

kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:09 PM EST (#105520) #
Rios grounds out 1-3 on the first pitch, middle of the 4th, 1-0 Yanks.

kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:13 PM EST (#105526) #
Posada takes low inside for a ball. High inside for a ball. Chops one foul off third. Low inside for a ball, 3-1. Walks on a high fastball.
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:14 PM EST (#105527) #
Matsui looks at a fastball for a strike. Lines a one hop single to right. Posada stops at second.
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:15 PM EST (#105528) #
Williams, switches over and bats from the right hand side. Takes a low inside breaking ball for a ball. Flies out to right. Posada tags and moves to third.
CaramonLS - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:16 PM EST (#105530) #
Rios's arm looks a little weak.. Probably still hurting from that injury.
Kieran - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:17 PM EST (#105531) #
Is Jim Kaat driving anyone else crazy? He continues to spit out rhetoric, like the NL being a "fastball" league, while the AL has relatively more breaking balls thrown. I'd love to see data that shows the pitch breakdowns by league. Maybe that would put and end to this cliche.

He also mentioned there being more power hitters in the AL. That certainly hasn't been true of late, HR production is pretty evenly split, especially when you factor out the DH.

DaveInNYC - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:18 PM EST (#105532) #
Actually Caramon, that was Gabe Gross in right field.

What a PATHETIC play by Shea Hillenbrand right there, that was disgusting. He had Posada dead to rights and he just basically GAVE HIM 3rd.

THROW THE DAMN BALL!
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:18 PM EST (#105533) #
Martinez looks at a first pitch strike. Low for a ball. Fouls one off. chops slowly to first, Hillenbrandt traps Posada off third, but Posada dives back into third ahead of the tag when Hilly waits too long and makes a lob throw. Bases loaded.
CaramonLS - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:19 PM EST (#105534) #
Oops I thought that was Rios, my bad. But that throw still seemed a little weak for Gross.
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:19 PM EST (#105535) #
Womack grounds to short, Adams double clutches, throws late to first as Posada scores and the bases remain full.
King Ryan - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:20 PM EST (#105536) #
Not that it matters, but Russ should have held the ball there.
CaramonLS - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:20 PM EST (#105537) #
Messy Messy fielding. This inning should have been over.
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:22 PM EST (#105538) #
Jeter looks at a first pitch change for a strike. Looks at an outside off speed pitch for a ball. Jeter tries to check his swing on a high fastball but could not, count is 1-2. High and away fastball evens the count at 2. Strikes out on a high slider.
R Billie - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:24 PM EST (#105539) #
Gross had his momentum going the wrong way. He didn't quite get around that ball to be moving towards third with the throw. To his credit the throw was just a little bit offline and might have had Posada otherwise.
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:24 PM EST (#105540) #
Rodriguez looks at one low - called a strike, 0-1. Low and outside, 1-1. Tries to check his swing at one up high, but cannot. 1-2. Breaking ball way outside evens the count at 2. Smashes a fastball past a leaping Adams, scoring 2. Womack nailed when he runs past 3rd. End of 4th, 4-0 Yanks.
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:25 PM EST (#105541) #
R Billie, I believe that was Cat. Gross is in right tonight.
CaramonLS - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:25 PM EST (#105542) #
Gus was fighting his control that inning, but he definately didn't deserve 3 runs that inning.
DaveInNYC - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:25 PM EST (#105543) #
I'm still stunned over the Hillenbrand play.... what the heck was that? Other than craptastic?

Is anything wrong with Hinske? It'd be cool to see him get some time at 1st.
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:27 PM EST (#105544) #
Wells actually fielded it threw to Adams, the cutoff man, who pivoted and threw to Koskie to nail Womack diving back into 3rd.
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:28 PM EST (#105545) #
Top 5th: Zaun watches the count even at 2-2. Singles sharply through the right side.
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:32 PM EST (#105546) #
Gross watches one go low, 1-0. Outside 2-0. High ball 3. Looks at a strike on the inside corner, 3-1. Fouls it into the stands off third to load the count, 3-2. Looks at a high fastball to whiff.
kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:33 PM EST (#105547) #
Adams looks at a high fastball for a ball. Lashes one through the hole into right for a single.

kpataky - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:35 PM EST (#105549) #
Catalanotto looks at a low fastball for a ball. The another inside, 2-0. Strike. then grounds into a fielders choice, 4-6. Runners on 1st and 3rd - 2 outs.
R Billie - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:36 PM EST (#105550) #
I was refering to Gross' throw from right field to third base on Posada's tag up.

That almost looked like a high 3-2 changeup that Gross looked at. Seemed like a borderline pitch but it had just a little bit of late fade to bring it back down towards the top edge of the zone.

Poor pitch call by Zaun. Chacin is not going to get a high fastball by Sheffield out over the plate.

Giambi looks at one low for a ball. High fastball called a strike. Low outside nice pickup by Zaun - 2-1. Low and outside, 3-1. Inside pitch fouled back, count goes full. Low outside for a walk.

Sounds to me like Chacin is having some trouble with his placement. Is Zaun calling a bad game, or is this Chacin's fault?

Posada looks at one low and inside, 1-0. Posada reaches and chops one foul down third, 1-1. Looks at a slow change for a strike. Rockets one foul off third into the stands - still 1-2. Swings over a low outside pitch to whiff.
CaramonLS - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 08:49 PM EST (#105557) #
I'd say its more Chacin, hes just fighting his control quite a bit.

Although Zaun has led to at least 1 hit with a bad call.

You can see in this inning how the lack of a good fastball limits Chacin's ceiling. He can't challenge good hitters when behind in the count. I wouldn't have thrown a fastball there.

I was refering to that particular call being a bad one from Zaun. Chacin put the ball just about where Zaun called for it. I don't challenge a guy with Sheffield's bat speed high in the zone when my pitcher isn't touching 90 with his fastball.

It's not that I dont think they're being balanced, I think that part is ok. It's just that:

1. Koch isnt going to be closing
2. They just announced before the game who *was* going to be the closer.
3. Koch is not making $6.3 million this year
4. Even if he was that wouldnt make him their highest paid player with Halladay on the team.

I just found it funny that they could get so many things wrong in the space of 5 seconds or so. I guess it really is spring training for the announcers too.

Just to note about the Koch thing - yes, perhaps the announcers should have known better, but thats not really their fault. They have tons of guys working the games and giving them stats and things to say while their broadcasting.

statistical errors generally arent he fault of the broadcasters, unless its something they really should know better (like, maybe the koch thing)
VBF - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 10:20 PM EST (#105614) #
Even so, I would imagine that the announcers would be somewhat familiar with Koch (at the very least)and be able to put two and two together.
StephenT - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 10:32 PM EST (#105615) #
I enjoyed the YES broadcast. A lot of nice comments about the Jays from the announcers. It was good of Sportsnet to pick it up.

I think Kay meant that of the Jays players in camp this year, Koch was the highest paid last year ($6.4m), which I wouldn't have guessed. (Checking now, Halladay was $6.0m last year, Koskie was $4.5m last year.)

NFH, I liked your home theatre comments (even though I don't have one). One thing I've noticed on Rogers Digital Cable here in Ottawa: channel 827 (digital Sportsnet Ontario) is not as clear as the other digital Sportsnet channels (so tonight I watched on 153, Sportsnet Pacific). I've no idea why that is.

Brent, no, the Sportsnet HD channel showed an HD basketball game. The announcers didn't mention HD, so I doubt it was in HD in NY. Good of Sportsnet to maximize HD programming on its HD channel.

It's really hard to understand Chacin's pitching from the left-centre field camera. It just looks like the ball is moving sideways across the screen.

I don't mind Batista as 8th/9th-inning pitcher. I think it's an over-rated position. Often the bigger situations are to get out of a jam in the 6th or 7th. If you can hold on to those, sometimes the lead is bigger by the 9th. If League is the best reliever, and if he is brought in at those times, that's fine with me.

So is Chacin starting the Home Opener? Or Bush still? Either is fine.

And for all those following: the Jays' Spring Pythagorean has fallen to .472 (35 runs for, 37 runs against).

Just checked out rotoworld. They are all over the Jays for switching Batista to the bullpen. They even put a jab in there about the Jays chances for finishing above 4th this year. I do have to admit, this move seems a little odd, and I just dont understand the timing of this move.
Cristian - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 10:39 PM EST (#105618) #
I don't think the decision is really a big deal. The decision isn't written in stone. The Jays can change their minds if Chacin isn't ready or Batista struggles closing games. The only thing this does is makes everyone update their fantasy draft rankings.
Lefty - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 10:42 PM EST (#105619) #
It's like they're the new Rockies. The Jays had made it pretty clear that Justin Speier would close, but something changed their minds, even though they spent a fair amount of money to keep Speier and bring in Scott Schoeneweis and Billy Koch over the winter and did nothing to improve their rotation. This is just such a bad idea. Now both Josh Towers and Gustavo Chacin are in the rotation and someone like Scott Downs is the sixth starter. The Jays have less of a chance of finishing in third place than they did yesterday.

The above is rotoworlds assesment of closer situation.

Personally, I'm getting whiplash. Just when you think they have a plan .... thunk. How does Speier take this news? "You're our man, just kidding, er ..ah, we have another idea we want to try." Speier was probably having fantasies about his next contract. Frig, he had the job. It should have been his to loose. But he'll just have to suck it up.

Chacin repeated Double A about a dozen times. Why would a seamhead inclined team make such a big decision on Speier and Batista's career on the basis of creating a spot for a career minor leaguer with a poor track record.

How can fans have the faith Ricciardi lusts for if he hasn't even gut the guts to stay with his own convictions.

I'm so peeved of I nearly wrote Grand Funk Out.
Mylegacy - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 10:45 PM EST (#105620) #
The timing is the curious thing... BUT, it they do it they have to get Batista into the new mode before opening day.

There was an article the other day in which Batista was working on a new pitch. Could be management figured enough is enough, we ask the guy to limit his various pitches and what does he do... go try another one. Might have been the straw that breaks the camel's back...

That combined with Chacin's perceived quality, and Speier being shaky.

Do both League and Chulk start the season in Tor's pen??

WAY off topic: Does any one KNOW the rule for a player out of options?? Specifically Rick Ankiel. The Cards have to keep him on the 25 man or expose him to waivers. If a team claims him can they send him to the minors???Thanks...
R Billie - Thursday, March 10 2005 @ 10:53 PM EST (#105623) #
The move is not to my tastes either. I think you're much better off having four known quantities in the rotation and have a fifth starter who wins and keeps the job on merit. Now you have both Chacin and Towers in the rotation with their fringy stuff though I think Chacin's is clearly better.

The bullpen does get better. Batista is better than whatever 7th man they were going to go with. If they insist on keeping League up maybe this will move him down to a multi-inning long relief role where he can experiment with his secondary pitches more.

Batista should be able to get in the neighourhood of 35 saves assuming the Jays win around 75 games. That's going to give him some value whether or not it's actually a good move for the Jays on paper. Speier might have been able to do the job as well but with about $9M due to Batista between this year and next, maybe it's an opportunity to see if he can attract a good prospect or a solid bat in trade in July or next off-season. If he has solved his control problems as he claims then it could work out for the Jays in the long run.

Batista as closer is an odd situation. His SO-BB (1.47) and SO/9 (4.71) were scary in '04 and perhaps moving to the pen will cause him to adjust and fix those. Pitchers with ratios like he had last year rarely can hold it together for long. Only once has he been at a 2-1 SO/BB ratio and his K/9 has never passed 6.75 which is lower than ideal.

Batista was a good inning eater last year and as a starter was mediocre trade bait (couple of B-level prospects is all I see for him). If he can put it together as a closer then suddenly he might be worth an A-level prospect or even worth keeping around (doubtful with the young studs on the farm). If as a starter he continued his ways of 2004 he might have blown up into a 5+ ERA starter who no one would trade for.

Still... I hate to shift a guy out of the rotation. I wonder if the Jays feel their young pitchers will force their hand by mid-season thus making them look at ways to try to pump up the value of Batista and/or Towers and Chacin so they can do a trade or open a slot easier.

2005 is shaping up to be an interesting year.

I had to miss the game tonight, too bad it didn't turn out well :(

Wow, Batista as the closer...Quite the shock, especially since they told us Speier was the guy early on. I believe it'll be an improvement to the bullpen, as many have said, but it certainly makes us look shaky in regards to our rotation. Interesting days lie ahead..

It didn't make sense to me last year, and it doesn't make sense this year.

What is the logic in taking a pitcher who generally has a hard time in his first two innings of any start, and making him the closer?

Sure, he got away with a bunch of saves in his time in the role at the end of last year, but how many of them were nail biters? It seemed like a good 50% at least to me. (though my recollection is no doubt foggy. I'll have to go look at the stats now.

You guys have already covered most of the points I wanted to make about Batista.

I remember a few days ago I saw a story on Batista and he was asked about if his control issues from last season is a thing of the past. I was thinking to myself, what kind of answer do you expect? I doubt Batista is going to come out and say "I think I'll still walk too many guys this year" or "I don't know if my control issue has been solved but I'll find out in Spring Training."

What makes this move strange is the timing of it. Before today, JP has said Batista would be a starter after FA ended. Why the sudden change of heart after a few weeks of Spring Training? I wonder if there is a trade brewing that will bring the Jays a SP.

As for tonights game, I know the Hillenbrand/Posada run down will give me nightmares. That was just awful on Shea's part.

This is a joke, right? Did Batista give up all 8 runs out of the pen on some alternate TV channel that I didn't know about, or are you saying that Batista is a much better starter than Chacin and would not have been beaten up by the Yankees?

Or did you just see a loss as a chance to fire off a free shot at J.P.?

Dave Till - Friday, March 11 2005 @ 07:43 AM EST (#105637) #
The Star reported that Koch is unlikely to make the team, which may have influenced the Jays' decision to move Batista to the closer's spot.

You never know, but I don't think Batista is likely to succeed in the closer's role. Good closers usually have one dominating pitch, have good control, and have no fear; Batista throws about eight types of pitches, is wilder than an angry bear, and sometimes appears hesitant out there. Mind you, Gregg Zaun was quoted this morning comparing Batista's cut fastball to Mariano Rivera's. I assume that Batista will be ordered by his superiors to throw only one or two of his pitches.

I wonder whether the Jays are expecting one of their other starting prospects to be ready quite soon. Chacin is unproven, and I'm not sure whether he will hold the job; I assume that the Jays have a Plan B lined up in case this doesn't happen. Or at least I hope they do.

This decision also may indicate that the Jays are seeing this year as a warmup for 2006 or 2007. During one of those years, the Jays will be able to unleash the full force of their new budget; right now, they want to know which of their current batch of pitchers can help them down the road. This may explain why Chacin is being given a full shot. He's been in the high minors forever, and if he can't do it now, he'll never be able to do it.

Very good point, Dave. I expect this reasoning did play a large role into the decision. Still, it's interesting to contrast this scenario to the way the Gross one is playing one. Evidently they must think that Gross has something more to learn at Syracuse, or else they could be expected to run the same scenario with him.

What is the logic in taking a pitcher who generally has a hard time in his first two innings of any start, and making him the closer?

I think that had a lot to do with Batista throwing so many different types of pitches and struggling to locate them all over the first couple innings of a ballgame.

I'm assuming that he'll shorten his repetoire of pitches as a closer.

The other logical assumption is that he can warm up more, since he'll only be pitching an inning or two.

The only part that bothers me, and it hasn't been mentioned here yet, is what happens to Brandon League now? I just assumed he'd be the full-time closer by mid-season.

There was talk of having him play some games as a starter in AAA. Or maybe Batista's shiny saves number will tempt some GM and we'll flip him for a young hitter? Regardless, Batista closing at the start of the season is no guarantee that he'll be closing half way through the season. I'd bet that if Chacin flames out as a starter we'll see Batista back in the rotation.

Batista, we should remember, is used to flipping back and forth between the pen and the rotation. I don't think it will do him much harm.

I dislike this move a great deal, but I can see the reasons for it. We don't know, as things stand, how much of this is coming from Batista's own suggestion. If he feels more comfortable right now in the pen, it's probably the right move.
