It's a safe bet that the most-linked-to site from Batter's Box is the sheer greatness of Sean Forman's Baseball-Reference.com. If you haven't ever seen the site, set aside seven or eight hours, then go spend a minute or two poking around (trust me; the seven or eight hours will disappear quickly).

I know my own pet project, Baseball's Hall of Names literally could not exist without the site we've come to know simply as "BBRef."

BBRef owner Forman recently sent an e-mail to his newsletter subscribers announcing updates to the site in time for Opening Day 2005.

Below is the text of Forman's latest e-mail. The distribution is quite infrequent, perhaps six or seven times a year, but it's always something worth knowing about the site; be sure to sign yourself up.

Hey Bauxites ... (a) do you sponsor a BBRef page? (b) if not, which page would you like to sponsor and why? (c) what are your favourite sponsorships -- some are pretty wacky!

Best sponsorship message I've ever seen is for John Halama.

I once sponsored Jim Sundberg but shamefully let it lapse. I should renew. I don't think many Batter's Box readers would fight me over him.

I got the $2 credit from doing the survey back in December and sponsored Jimmy Rogers's page. He was one of two Blue Jays players who were going for $2 and the only one I actually remember seeing play.

I considered sponsoring Tim Pugh's $5 page instead because I was always amused by his series of transactions from 1996, but I decided to save my $3.

Da Box is a proud sponsor of the 1993 Toronto Blue Jays team page. If you use BB-Ref -- and if you're even a casually inquisitive fan, you do -- plunk down some change and sponsor a page today. Sean Forman renders the online baseball community a tremendous service with his Website, and sponsoring a page is a small way to help defray his costs and show your appreciation.

BB Ref is a wonderful resource. I use it constantly for the Hall Watch series, but I'd like to highlight a feature on the site that others may not be aware of.

One can easily get a flavour of the regular position players at any position during a particular year. Say that you're interested in National League second basemen in 1952. Go to Leagues > 1952 NL, and click on the fielding summary. It's broken down by position, and there you will find the defensive statistics of each of the second baseman and an easy link to their offensive statistics. It's a very useful tool.

I sponsored controversial outfielder Jose Guillen's baseball-reference page in hopes of attracting viewers to my Washington Nationals Web site. I figured, inevitably, he'd do something during the season that would have fans flocking to learn more about him...

You've gotta love that Web site.
