Last night, Josh Banks navigated his way to seven innings of shutout ball, John-Ford explored the art of the extra-base hit and a couple of Canadians helped Lansing to an extra-inning win.

Buffalo 2, Syracuse 1
Box score, game story

Well, that was a high-scoring affair. No runs were scored from the top of the fourth to the top of the tenth. Chad Gaudin left after six, giving up only one run among six strikeouts. At least this time I didn't jinx his no-hitter. Jason Arnold, recast as a relief pitcher, got stuck with the loss despite the following results: out, strikeout, out, hit, strikeout, strikeout, strikeout. Too bad that hit was a solo homerun by Jake Gautreau in the top of the 10th. Jesse Carlson also made an appearance, pitching two scoreless innings. Ernie Young of the Bisons struck out every time he came up to the plate -- not a good night.

Among the hitters, John-Ford Griffin doubled and homered, both scoring and driving in Syracuse's only run of the game. Bryant Nelson went 1-for-4, lowering his average to .429.

New Hampshire 1, Norwich 0
Box score, game story

Is cold weather hindering the offence? The Fisher Cats and Navigators combined for just six hits yesterday in their second-straight 1-0 game. Yes, six hits. Of the three for New Hampshire, Rob Cosby had two of them, including an RBI single. He drove in Maikel Jova, who had reached via one of the two extra-base hits in the game; a double in the bottom of the fourth.

Josh Banks was terrific, striking out five in seven innings and giving up only one hit. By the time I was eating lunch, he already had a K. There was some more great pitching from Jordan De Jong and Lee Gronkiewicz as well, with 1-2-3 innings in the eighth and ninth, respectively. "Gronk" recorded his second consecutive one-inning, 1-0 save.

Another play of note was Jova's throw from RF in the bottom of the sixth to nail Tim Hutting at home, running from first on a double. This would have tied the game, but it was a 9-4-2 putout instead. Carlo Cota had the "beautiful" relay throw on the play.

Dunedin 11, Sarasota 3
Box score

The only game played south of the Mason-Dixon line is the only game with more than seven runs scored. Sarsota's Josh Hall didn't make it out of the fourth inning, with nine hits and seven runs (six earned) charged to his name. It was 10-3 after that inning, so the game was over before it became official.

Adam Lind drove in five with a three-run homer and a two-run single. Every starter collected a hit, except Eric Arnold...but he walked and scored, so that's good enough. Scott Dragicevich and David Smith had three hits, and Justin James pitched three innings and struck out three. For more on this game, check out a first-hand report from jim854 here.

Lansing 4, South Bend 3
Box score, game story

David Corrente collected three hits, but his most important one was in the bottom of the eleventh. With Luke Hetherington on second, the Chatham boy drove a single up the middle to score the winning run. Ryan Klosterman added a homerun, and Box favourite Chip Cannon had a double.

Another Canadian farmhand, Aaron Wideman, picked off two batters at first and had retired the first 11 batters he faced until the fourth, when he walked Mark Reynolds and Cesar Nicolas -- make that Czar Nicolas, I'm sure he's never heard that one before -- whacked a two-run shot to left. The Other Joey McLaughlin earned the win after pitching the 11th.

Three-Star Selection:
3. David Corrente
2. Josh Banks
1. Adam Lind

The Dunedin roster had a new pitcher yesterday as Adrian Martin has joined the team in place of Ryan Prham who volutarily retired.

An article on Chad Mulholland's injury.
Not much in the way of new information.

It's dated April 1st, 2005 so it doesn't have an update on where he is now (Extended Spring Training?)

That's a nice promotion for Martin, who pitched for Pulaski last year. He tossed 56 innings with a 3.54 ERA there, 51 / 12 K / BB, 65 hits, 2 homers, 7 starts of 18 games total. He turned 20 in September.

Trivia: Drafted in the 19th round of the 2003 amateur draft, Martin is the only high schooler drafted by Toronto that year that's still in the organization. One other 2003 high school draftee is currently playing in the Jays farm system. Who is he?
Marc Hulet - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 10:18 AM EDT (#111479) #
Brian Grant.

But Adrian Martin was a draft and follow. He attended junior college for a year after being drafted and signed before the 2004 draft.
Jordan - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 10:19 AM EDT (#111480) #
That's quite a promotion for Adrian Martin, who was in Pulaski last year. A draft-and-follow plucked from a Florida high school in the 19th round in 2003, Martin was considered something of a prize when he was eventually signed. He's only 20, so either the Jays are challenging him or they're using him to fill a roster spot temporarily. I hope it's the former.

Despite the home run -- and that's two in two appearances, which is really not good for a short reliever -- I'm thrilled to see all those strikeouts from Jason Arnold. People have been predicting for awhile that his velocity and K's would rise in a short-relief role. They seem to have been right, but those round-trippers have to stop. And there sits John-Ford Griffin at .320/.414/.760 in his first 6 Triple-A games. Could these two guys finally be coming around?

I'm happy to see Josh Banks throwing so well -- but Norwich really does have a poor offence, and these are the kinds of performances Banks should be producing after almost 20 starts at Double-A. In my ideal world, Banks moves to Syracuse when Francisco Rosario gets promoted to the majors. We'll see if that unfolds in due course.

Jonny's way faster than me, as usual.

Brian Grant is incorrect, he was drafted in 2002 by the Jays.

Aaron Wideman would be the other 2003 high school pick.
Lugnut Fan - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 10:41 AM EDT (#111485) #
I was at the Lugnut game last night and it is funny that you bring up the fact Wideman picked a couple off last night. Travis Gulick was the first one he picked off. He is a home town favorite for Lansing fans as he played for Michigan State and he lives in East Lansing. He got a single to left and after he did, one of the South Bend kids looked at his parents and said "Don't worry, he will get at least a double out of this". He went on Wideman's first movement and they picked him off easily. Kind of funny.

Wideman looked alot sharper last night than he did on Friday. He had more life on his fastball and really looked solid out there. Mark Sopko also had an outstanding 4 innings of relief last night.

I will say this, the kid playing right field for South Bend (I believe his name is Gonzalez, but I don't have my book in front of me), made the most unbelievable throw I have ever seen at this level last night. Yuber Rodriguez led off the game with a single, and advanced to third on another single by Thigpen. Cory Patton then hit one in the air to fairly deep right field. I thought that Yuber would certainly score and give Patton a sacrifice fly, but this kid threw an absolute laser to home plate, dead on the money and had Rodriguez thrown out by at least three or four steps. The catcher turned and had to wait for Yuber to get there. That throw was absolutely amazing. No one in the world would have scored on that thing.
Jonny German - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 10:49 AM EDT (#111486) #
Thanks for the notes, LF!

Dean is correct - Wideman was selected by the Expos in the 11th round of the 2003 draft.
Jordan - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 10:50 AM EDT (#111487) #
LF, that must have been Carlos Gonzalez, a teenager signed by the Diamondbacks out of Venezuela a couple of years ago. He's toolsy and very raw, but John Sickels already ranks him 16th on Arizona's Top 20 list, and Baseball America says he has the best outfield arm in the entire system. Quite a treat to see him in action.
Pistol - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 11:17 AM EDT (#111488) #
Wideman was selected by the Expos in the 11th round of the 2003 draft.

Tricky, tricky.

I went through the Jays 2003 draft at BA and wondered why I couldn't find the answer. Even when I cheat I can't win.

Raul Tablado has been activated and should be playing tonight, according to NH Fisher Cats media relations department.

And it looks like John Ogiltree is the odd-man out, going on the DL.

There's a marquee double A matchup tonight at 6 p.m. Vince Perkins and the Fisher Cats visit the Binghamton Mets and Yusmeiro Petit. It would not be a shocker if it's another low-scoring affair for the Cats.

Francisco Rosario starts for Syracuse tonight at 6.
Lugnut Fan - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 03:20 PM EDT (#111518) #
Thank you Jordan.

Yes it was Carlos Gonzalez. That kid has the best arm I have ever seen.
Stellers Jay - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 03:27 PM EDT (#111520) #
A point for discussion. How close is Rosario to helping the Jays this year? Are we talking about 10ish starts in Syracuse and calling him up in June? I know a lot depends on the needs of Toronto at the time but is he the first one to get called up when a need arises?
Jordan - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 03:34 PM EDT (#111521) #
I think Rosario's performances will determine when he gets called up to Toronto -- his first start was very impressive, and if he can put some more of those together over the next several weeks, a promotion as early as Victoria Day wouldn't shock me.

There are plenty of other considerations in play, of course, including the health and performance of the Jays' current pitching staff. And if Rosario gets rocked tonight, the enthusiasm will dwindle rapidly. But when he's ready, I expect the Jays to make room for him.
Jordan - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 03:35 PM EDT (#111522) #
Mind you, if all the Jays need is a spot starter or long reliever, they're likelier to recall a Ryan Glynn or a Spike Lundberg first.
Mike Green - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 03:50 PM EDT (#111524) #
If Rosario continues to pitch well, I'd recommend that he get the first call regardless whether an opening occurs in the rotation or the bullpen. It will not hurt him to get his first major league experience in the pen.

Stellers Jay - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 04:28 PM EDT (#111526) #
I think he'll be out of options by next spring, so it would be nice for the Jays to get a good read on where he's at this summer because he's going to have to stick with the Big Club next year to retain his services. I guess the same logic would apply to Jason Arnold too.
R Billie - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 05:32 PM EDT (#111536) #
It's all about the curve with Rosario. Last year he really hit his stride when he was able to use it with confidence down the stretch. When he has his three plus pitches going (fastball, curve, change) he's really tough.

I'd like to see him up with the big team but there's no rush. Ironically he probably has better command at this point than League does. So I'm not sure why Brandon is with the big club while Rosario is down in AAA. I think the smart thing would have been to let both League and Rosario start in AAA and earn their way up.

Rosario's one drawback seems to be that he's a little more homerun prone than you'd expect from a guy with his stuff. But if he can keep his walks down and strikeouts up that probably won't hurt him too much.
Rob - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 06:07 PM EDT (#111537) #
Some BBRadio for you here, as the Fisher Cats are in Binghamton for the B-Mets' home opener. Perkins vs Petit. Raul Tablado is indeed eligible; John Ogiltree is on the DL with a right leg contusion, Mike Basso says.

Yousmeiro Petit was born in Maracaibo, VZ. The first person to name all four players -- without cheating -- from Maracaibo who have played for Toronto gets a prize. Two LHP, two hitters.

Negron-Cota-Barker-Jova-Acuna-Kratz-Cosby-Tablado-Vito is your lineup tonight. Negron strikes out to begin the game.
Stellers Jay - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 06:19 PM EDT (#111538) #
I'll take a shot at 50 percent of them being the Chacin and Quiroz battery mates. No clue who the other two might be.
Alex Obal - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 06:26 PM EDT (#111539) #
The F-Cats are through 1 in Binghamton. Petit struck out Cota swinging, allowed a single to Kevin Barker and whiffed Jova.

Perkins induced two quick groundouts from Wayne Lydon and Anderson Hernandez. Aarom Baldiris, playing second today, poked a single to right. Mike Jacobs battled through a two-strike count, but Perkins blew a 3-2 fastball by him to end the inning.
Rob - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 06:30 PM EDT (#111540) #
Chacin and Quiroz are 2 of the 4. Hint: one of the remaining players pitched only 9 games as a Blue Jay, and another has just 47 career AB.

Petit has four strikeouts through two. It might not be a pitching duel for very long -- Petit has a 50 pitch limit tonight. He had an easy first, though.

Cota was one of his victims and he has a ridiculous strikeout total now, 14 in 29 AB. The only thing worse than being in Binghamton is striking out in Binghamton.

Tablado making his AA debut now, and with a runner on first, he lines one to left. A 1.000/1.000/1.000 line for Raul!
Vito popped out to shallow right to end the inning.
No score through 1.5.

Note: Reimers pitches tomorrow for New Hampshire.
Stellers Jay - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 06:32 PM EDT (#111541) #
I cheated to find the other two, but I'll hold off for now. If anyone can name the other two without cheating they deserve the prize without a doubt. One I'd never heard of and the other I would have bet $100 he never played for Toronto.
Stellers Jay - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 06:34 PM EDT (#111542) #
Another Hint: the lefty pitcher played for both Canadian teams.
Alex Obal - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 06:35 PM EDT (#111543) #
Oh! Omar Daal?
Rob - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 06:36 PM EDT (#111544) #
Vince Perkins to pitch the second.

Our own Gerry McDonald gets a mention on the broadcast! Gerry's in Binghamton tonight; I wonder if he''ll join the boys in the WKXL booth later on.

In other news, Redman grounds out to second and gets the next two batters quickly. Two innings complete, with no score. Like that surprised anyone.

Mr. Obal, O. Daal is right.

Bottom 2nd - Buffalo 2 Syracuse 1. Kyle Denney pitching for Buffalo.

All the scoring in this one came in the 1st. Francisco Rosario retired the Bisons 1-2-3 in the 2nd.

* Danny Solano, first pitch swinging, grounds out to 3rd - 1 out
* Justin Singleton singles to left on a fastball past diving SS Brandon Phillips
* Anton French grounds into a 4-6-3 DP, Singleton out at 2nd - 2 OUT & 3 OUT

0 runs, 1 hit, 0 errors, 0 left on base

After 2 - Buffalo 2 Syracuse 1

Jeebus, I have no idea. How 'bout Luis Sojo?

Petit's line so far: 3 IP, 0 R, 5 H, 5 K, 0 BB. Somebody is warming up in Binghamton's pen, but our announcers couldn't make out who.
Brian W - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 06:44 PM EDT (#111549) #
I'll take a wild stab in the dark and go with Willie Canate, which I think is the name of a real player who may or may not have played for Toronto (or be from Maracaibo).
Rob - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 06:46 PM EDT (#111550) #
AA:

It's the top of the third, and after Negron is retired, Carlo Cota does not strike out! A single for Cota. Barker immediately follows with a line drive up the middle, his second hit of the game.

Jova doesn't drive in Cota and neither does Acuna. Five hits in the game, but no runs for New Hampshire. 44 pitches for Petit; the next inning will probably be his last.

And yes, Canate is the answer. Hooray for Rule 5 picks who never did anything ever again!
Stellers Jay - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 06:47 PM EDT (#111551) #
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Kyle Denney is the one who was shot in the leg on the team bus coming out of KC last year. The only thing saving major injury was the fact that he was wearing knee high hooker boots at the time as a part of the Cleveland rookie hazing.
Rob - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 06:51 PM EDT (#111552) #
AA:

Perkins strikes out the first batter, then strikes out the second batter. With two strikes on Lydon, he...flies out. 1-2-3, three scoreless frames on the board in Binghamton.

Just one hit given up by the Canadian so far.
Rob - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 06:55 PM EDT (#111553) #
AA:

Petit starts the top of the fourth with a popup. Kratz makes the first out. Then another out from Rob Cosby. Then a flyout from Tablado. Boy, this is exciting.

Through 3.5, no score, etc.

AA:

A full count to Hernandez, and the ball is lined back to Perkins. He deflects it and Cota can't reach it in time. Leadoff infield hit.

Two quick strikes, then two fastballs miss to Baldiris. The 2-2 is swung on and missed, the fifth K for Perkins tonight. One out, Jacobs steps in and drives it back, back, caught by Negron at the track! Hernandez was all the way around third when the ball was caught, so he was doubled off first. He must have miscounted the number of outs.

Hey, guess what? No score! Four complete.

#2JBrumfield - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 07:05 PM EDT (#111557) #
Bottom 3rd - Buffalo 3 Syracuse 1. Kyle Denney pitching for Buffalo. Yes, Denney was the one who had a bullet graze his calf on the Indians bus in K.C. last year according to BA, who ranks him Cleveland's #23 prospect. Denney was wearing cheerleaders boots at the time during his rookie hazing, preventing a more serious injury.

* Bryant Nelson grounds out to 1st - 3-1 - 1 OUT

AA: Eric Junge, with 20 career big league innings, is on in relief for Petit -- 4 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K. Not bad at all. Junge is seven years older than Petit, for what it's worth.

Big Vito gets a Big Full Count, then a Big Double off the wall. Miguel Negron grounds out, Vito has to stay at second.

Cota with a triple down the line! The Fisher Cats are in flight, leading 1-0.

Kevin Barker with another single, and it's 2-0! It was an blooper, an Eastern Leaguer, if you will, just out of reach of the shortstop.

More scoring here, as Jova's fly ball squeaks past Malek in right. A single and an error is the scoring decision. Just one out, three runs already in, and two men in scoring position. Acuna hits a sac fly and it's four to nothing.

Two outs, Kratz batting. A grounder, and Anderson Hernandez just gets to it, but throws it wild. Cosby hits it right to Wayne Lydon and the inning is over.

4 runs, 5 hits, one left on base. 4-0 after 4.5.

AA: Perkins is still pitching in the bottom of the 5th. Redman leads off and quickly falls behind 0-2, but fights off several tough pitches and draws a nine-pitch walk. Jeff Duncan promptly hits a sharp grounder to Tablado, who steps on second and fires to first for an easy double play. Jay Caligiuri whacks the first pitch he sees off the wall in right, just out of Jova's reach. Bobby Malek hits a single to centre, and Negron's throw is cut off. Caligiuri scores to end New Hampshire's shutout streak at 26.1 innings. But Kratz fires a throw to first to pick Malek off for the third out.

1 run, 2 hits, 0 errors, 1 left on. New Hampshire 4, Binghamton 1, end of the 5th.

AA: Junge is back for more after a tough first inning of work.

- Tablado strikes out on three pitches.
- Big Vito doubles to left, his second straight two-bagger.
- Negron bounces out to the pitcher, and Vito doesn't advance. Negron is now 0-4.
- Cota battles back from an 0-2 count to run the count full, and he hits a flare to shallow left that drops in. Chiaravallotti, without having to worry about getting doubled off, scores. The Cats lead 5-1. Our announcers note that Junge works really, really slowly.
- Barker strikes out on a checked swing.

1 run, 2 hits, 0 errors, 1 left on. New Hampshire 5, Binghamton 1, middle of the 6th.

AA: Bubbie Buzachero is in to pitch the bottom of the 7th.

Perkins' line: 6.0 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 7 K. Good stuff. This puts him in line for his first AA win.

Thanks, guys, for the BBRadio. The D-Jays lead Fort Myers 4-0 after 7 innings, behind Mike MacDonald's 1-hit pitching and Adam Lind's 3-3 with a walk. South Bend defeated Lansing 5-1, despite a fine start from Kyle Yates as Keng had a rough outing in relief.

And best of all from a selfish perspective, the milb.com boxscores are now accurate and complete.

Greetings from Binghamton.

Vince Perkins was impressive tonight. Perkins threw 85% to 90% fastballs, when you throw 92-95 you can do that, very few Mets could catch up to it. Perkins fastball just needs more consistency, he tends to miss away with the FB a lot. Perkins also threw a slider and he was more inconsistent with it, I would guess he threw it for a strike only about 33% of the time.

Bubbie threw two good innings, a good fastball, slider and change. The Mets were taking him, especially the slider, to rightfield, I am not sure if he was telegraphing his pitches or not. BTW Bubbie might be 5'11" in high heels. Lee Gronkiewicz is about an inch shorter.

I talked with several Cats and should have some updates next week.

Vito had the two biggest hits of the night. Cota had three hits although none of them were hit hard, the Mets rightfielder had real trouble with balls that bounced in front of him, and then behind him!

Mets starter was Petit, the Mets #2 prospect. His fastball is only 85-88 although his control is excellent. He profiles as a #4 or #5 starter to me.
