The parent club might have experienced some bad luck last night, but the farm system needed no karmic assistance at all: a rare and welcome organizational sweep was punctuated by a power outburst in Dunedin and a couple of simply superb pitching performances. It all started, as everything seems to these days, with a late grab for power in Ottawa.

Syracuse 5 Ottawa 4

The Skychiefs rallied in the top of the ninth inning to take 3 of their 4 games in Canada’s capital. Lynx starter Dave Borkowski stuck around one inning too long, allowing leadoff singles by Bryant Nelson and Gabe Gross, both of whom scored on a double by reliable vet Chad Mottola. Aaron Hill followed with another double to plate Mottola with the winning run. Chris Baker got the win for one inning of relief, while Jason Arnold shut down the Lynx in the ninth for his fourth save. Ottawa plans to bring a vote of non-confidence to the league office in hopes of getting the loss to their arrogant and decrepit opponents overturned, though it's quite clearly a pathetic ploy to score some cheap political points and further their own careers. Ahem. Moving along....

Chad Gaudin started for Syracuse and was lucky to dodge bullets all night, scattering 9 hits over 7 innings and allowing all 4 Lynx runs to score. He struck out 5, but encouragingly, walked nobody. Nelson reached base three times via 2 singles and a walk and scored twice, while Gross singled twice and drove in a run. Justin Singleton doubled and singled in 4 trips, while Hill’s double was his lone safety.

New Hampshire 7 New Britain 3

Lots of storylines to explore here, but I have to lead off with a helluva performance from Vince Perkins. The big Canadian allowed 2 runs on just 3 hits over 6 innings (including a homer); he walked 4 batters, as is his wont, but more than made up for that by striking out 11 batters. Steve Andrade followed up with 3 terrific innings of relief, whiffing 4 and allowing just 1 run on 2 hits and a walk. The pitching continues to carry the Fisher Cats, but as the weather warms up, so too do the bats.

It was a multi-pronged attack for New Hampshire last night -- Kevin Barker led the way with a solo home run and 2 walks, while Carlo Cota doubled and singled from the leadoff spot. An intriguing story, however, continues to be the current resurgence of Miguel Negron, who doubled, singled and scored 2 runs, raising his average to (a relatively impressive) .238. Negron had some hot streaks in Dunedin last summer, too, so it remains to be seen whether he can continue this recent surge. Rob Cosby drove in 2 runs with a double, and catcher Erik Kratz was the only F-Cat starter not to record a hit.

Dunedin 9 Brevard County 5

The bats continued to boom down in the Florida State League. Last year’s Grand Old Man of Charleston is this year’s Grand Old Man of Dunedin, and Clint Johnston clearly has something to prove. He hammered a pair of 2-run homers to lead the D-Jays to victory; coming into the game, Johnston was batting .311/.394/.400, and power was all that was missing from his repertoire. He sure found some tonight. Another home run came, quite unexpectedly, off the bat of light-hitting shortstop Manny Mayorson. D-Jay mainstay Adam Lind doubled and walked twice, driving in a run and scoring another. Second baseman Ryan Roberts doubled and drove in 3 runs.

Starter Mike MacDonald did not bring his A-game to the ballpark tonight. He was lucky to escape with the win after allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks in 5 innings; he did strike out 5, but that’s an uncharacteristic number of baserunners for the suddenly hittable MacDonald. Tracy Thorpe supplied the best relief outing of the night, 2 innings of 2-hit shutout ball, striking out 1. Yesson Berroa and Milton Tavarez mopped up pretty sloppily after the D-Jays scored 6 in the 6th inning.

Lansing 4 Southwest Michigan 3

The Lugnuts completed the rare organizational sweep with a comeback win against Southwest Michigan (and what kind of a team name is that? What, do they play in a cornfield in the middle of nowhere? There isn’t a single town in the vicinity willing to adopt this team? Lugnut Fan, help us out here). SM trailed 1-0 heading to the top of the 8th, but scored 3 times off tiring starter Kyle Yates and reliever Joey McLaughlin. Lansing was lucky to escape with just 3 runs, however, as corner outfielders Erik Nielsen and Luke Hetherington each gunned down SM runners at third base and home plate, respectively. Lansing promptly tied the game on a pinch-hit 2-run homer by Joey Wolfe, and David Hicks drove in the eventual winning run by plating Christian Snavely, who had doubled.

Yates deserved a better fate after throwing one of his best games of the season, allowing just 2 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings on 6 hits and a walk, striking out 8 opponents. McLaughlin vultured the win, while Danny Hill had little trouble earning his 8th save in the top of the ninth. Curtis Thigpen and Chip Cannon each doubled and singled, while Snavely’s two-bagger was Lansing’s only other extra-base hit.

Your Three-Star Selection: It’s a tough call tonight, with so many deserving candidates:

3. Kyle Yates, Lansing: Eight strikeouts and 2 runs allowed in 7 and 1/3 superb innings.

2. Vince Perkins, New Hampshire: Eleven strikeouts in 6 innings, holding the opposition to 2 runs; he'd be the first star but for…

1. Clint Johnston, Dunedin: A pair of 2-run homers powers the D-Jays to victory and helps ensure the organizational sweep.

I have to work all day Saturday -- urgh -- so I won't have time to locate game reports from the local papers. So Bauxites should feel free to post news reports on this evening's games, and those who attended the Lynx-Skychiefs match are particularly encouraged to share their impressions.

Ha ha Jordan.

To answer your question about the naming of Southwest Michigan, well it is a long and painful story. I actually have a soft spot in my heart for that organization. They play in Battle Creek Michigan and this is the third name change in the franchises history, actually fourth. When Battle Creek was awarded the franchise, they were initially named the Golden Kazoo's due to the close proximity of Kalamazoo Michigan. There was a large outcry about that name so it was quickly changed to the Michigan Battle Cats so as to not offend anyone before they every played a game there. They were initially affiliated with Boston, but once that player development contract was up Boston bolted. Then Houston signed a four year player development contract and due to lack of fan support and interest they left. They were then forced into an affiliation with the New York Yankees. Well, you just can't be a Yankee's affiliate and not wear the pinstripes, so they changed their name to the Battle Creek Yankees. After their two year PDC was up, the Yankees bolted for the Sally league (good ridance, they had no prospects), and they were forced into an affiliation with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. That is where we are today. I was actually afraid that the Lugnuts were going to sign with the Devil Rays when the Cubs left because there is a relationship established there with the ownership group of the Devil Rays as they also own the Montgomery Biscuits which is the AA Southern League affiliate for them. They changed the name to Southwest Michigan from Battle Creek because they are trying to appeal to the whole region of Southwest Michigan. It isn't working and the fact that the independent league Kalamazoo Kings play 15 minutes away, and the Lansing Lugnuts and West Michigan Whitecaps are only an hour away, if you do the math, it is too many teams and not enough people.....Someone will lose the attendance game.

They play in a stadium, not quite in a corn field, but it is surrounded by little league diamonds. It is kind of neat actually. It is an old style minor league stadium. The only real attraction is, well.....Baseball. Quite honestly, people in that area either come to Lansing or West Michigan to go to games. C.O. Brown Stadium is very much a minor league stadium. The Whitecaps and Lugnuts kind of have a major league feel to them and there are things to do outside of the ball game which I think adds to the attraction of these places. It definitly doesn't hurt that the Lugnuts and Whitecaps kill them in marketing either. There are pillars in the sight lines of the grand stands and it is hard to have an unobstructed view seat. They do have field level seating, where you actually sit out to one side of the dugout and the seats jut out in front of the dugouts so you can look inside. I don't recommned sitting in this area if you do not pay attention to the game, because I have seen some real shots come through there. I played in the stadium one time when I was in college and the locker room facilities are quite small and really need to be updated. They do however have the probably the best ground crew in the Midwest League and their playing surface is stellar. I wish we could get their ground crew in Lansing.

They have not been void of wacky promotions or talent on the field however. Last year, to attract fans, they gave everyone a free seat and on top of that, they gave you a dollar to come to the game. All refreshments were free, and the hope was that people would come back and spend that dollar. I think they drew 300 or 400 people for that promotion. This year, you can eat penny hot dogs every Tuesday. As far as talent to have come through this franchise, the list is as follows:

Carl Pavano - New York Yankees
Shea Hillenbrand - Toronto Blue Jays
David Eckstein - St. Louis Cardinals (even though he never played a game for them, I will count him because he was on the roster).
Roy Oswalt - Houston Astros
Johan Santana - Minnesota Twins
Tim Redding - San Diego Padres
Aaron Miles - Colorado Rockies
Jason Alfaro - Syracuse Sky Chiefs
Mike Nannini (sp?) - Syracuse Sky Chiefs
John Buck - Kansas City
Jason Lane - Houston Astros.

There are plenty more that I'm forgetting that I can't think of off the top of my head. Oswalt, Santana, Redding, Miles, Alfaro and Nannini all came through here in 99 on the same team. I followed them really close that year because I lived in that area, although I still had season tickets to Lansing. Most of these guys have gone on and had solid to spectacular Major League careers. It was right in their back yard and they didn't support it. At the end of the year, the Battle Creek franchise will average 900 to 1000 fans per home game and it will be just another year.......

Sorry to take so long, but that is the history of the Southwest Michigan name.

Now about the game last night. When can I start calling these guys the cardiac kids? This was their 11th come from behind victory on the year. Yates had a spectacular performance. I think that Joyce might have stuck with him too long though because he looked a little winded, although I don't think his pitch count was very high, his velocity fell from the high 80's to low 90's to the low to mid 80's and he started relying on the breaking stuff more. I myself probably would have taken him out after he hit the lead off batter, which was painful because he had him down 0-2. However, my boy Joey Wolfe came through in the clutch again. I know there is a log jam on this team, but I would sure like to see Joey get more playing time. He definitly deserves it as he always seems to come up witht he clutch hit. He is 3-5 on the homestand right now and has hit a home run in each of the last two games. He just accepts his role, prepares and is ready to go everyday to do whatever it is that he is asked to do. Danny Hill also picked up his eighth save. I would like to see him moved to a longer role at some point this season in relief. He is having a fantastic season closing out games, but he doesn't quite have major league closing stuff and I don't see him utilized in that situation in future stops in the organization.

So basically it's the Southwest Michigan Angels at Anaheim?

From N.H. media department: The Eastern League Champion New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Double-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, have sent right-handed relief pitcher Bubbie Buzachero to the Dunedin Blue Jays, Single-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays. Eastern League rules require rosters to be downsized from 24 active players to 23 on the 30th day of the season. With the move, the Fisher Cats roster now stands at the league maximum 23 players.

I attended last night's F-Cats game and it was one of those wierd baseball nights. Thankfully the final score is what counts! Even though Vince Perkins' line looks decent because of his 11 K's and minimal runs allowed, from the stands it looked anything but decent. Many pitches in the dirt or high fastballs forcing the catcher to stand and catch it. He consistantly hit 89+ on the gun, but with no consistant placement. Fortunately the Rock Cats' starter had a worse case of the same disease! There were at least 6 broken bat grounders/foul balls. One batter on New Britain had a broken bat on 2 straight pitches! To top it off, the temperature was rather chilly and it was the calm before the "storm" which has gripped the Northeast today. FYI, they'll be lucky if they get any part of the double-header in tomorrow.

FisherCat, it's interesting that you say that because it looking at the linescore it seems to me that Perkins' strikeouts where because of hitters chasing stuff near the strikezone rather that being overpowered. He still has a lot of improving to do to get back to where he was in the spring.

You hit it right on the head my man.
