Two blow out wins and one fairly big loss for Josh Banks.

Toledo 3, Syracuse 8

The Skychiefs won their 15th game of the season behind another strong outing from Scott Downs who went 7 strong innings. He allowed 2 runs while striking out 5 and walking none. Eric Crozier and John-Ford Griffin powered the offense, each with a two-run home run. Aaron Hill added two more hits, a single and a double, along with 3 runs scored and his 10th error of the season.

The Skychiefs catcher du jour, John Schneider, had a walk in three appearances and gunned down a baserunner in his first AAA appearance since an emergency callup in 2003. Justin Miller and Jason Arnold combined for the final two innings allowing only an unearned run.

New Hampshire 1, Portland 6

Josh Banks was roughed up for the first time in a while. Everything was going smoothly until the 3rd inning when 4 of the first 5 Sea Dogs hit for extra bases resulting in 4 runs. A two run homer later in the 6th inning would be the end of Banks' day. On the plus side, Josue Matos was dominant in relief of Banks. He walked the first batter he faced but then struck out the next 5 in a row. Ryan Houston pitched the ninth striking out 1. The Fisher Cats' only run came on a first inning home run by Kevin Barker.

NH jumps out on Portland 1-0 in the top of the first on a lead off double by Acuna and an RBI single by Barker. Vince Perkins in pitching for the Fisher Cats.

The NH offense has been awful to start the year. Last in agerage, homers, and runs scored in the eastern league. The pitching and defense has been outstanding. A team era of 2.95 and the defense has only committed 21 errors in 31 games.

It was good to look at the box score and see that the Luggies scored 10 runs and had 18 hits yesterday. Since the middle of last week, the offense has been very quiet and they have really struggled to score runs. Very good to see.

What's up with Josue Matos?

He was pounded last year with Syracuse and in 2002 at AAA as well. Both years he started all the games he was in. Here are his stats:

http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/josue_matos_.shtml

This year and in 2003 he was used as a reliever at AA. Both years he was dominant. This year he has pitched 14.2 innings & he has a 1.23 ERA and 22K/ 3BB.

His numbers could be better because he is at AA as opposed to AAA (or maybe he pitches better in odd years) but it seems to me that he is so dominant as a reliever that the Jays ought to try him at that role right away at AAA.

Wow. The Long Island Ducks roster is filled with recognizable names. Take a look at some of the former pro's on their roster:

Brian Bowles
John Rocker
Chris Latham
Wendell Magee
Donovan Osborne
Dominick Ambrosini (former Expo farmhand)

I'm sure I'm missing a few other ones that I don't quite recognize. Depastino's .455/.556/.727 line looks nice though, even if it is the Atlantic League (and only 22 ABs).

Josue Matos prefers to start, but hopefully the Jays have finally shown him that he could be a dominating reliever and only an average to below-average starter.

New Hampshire lose in the bottom of the ninth. Perkins was hit around a bit, as was Banks yesterday. Vermilyea pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless relief, with seven K's. Not bad against a good hitting team.

Scott Downs was called up to Toronto today, and Matt Whiteside went back to Syracuse.

Let's also welcome back the Guam bomber, who made his first start of the year tonight for Dunedin. How long does everyone think he'll be there? A week? Maybe two?

Some positive news about McGowan in Fordin's latest notes. He's throwing breaking pitches now and will make a couple more appearances in extended spring training. After that he will be assigned to Dunedin, probably by the end of the month.
