A solid win against an excellent pitcher and a (potentially) dangerous lineup, and some signs of life from Vernon Wells. Put that together with effective pitching from Doc and Batista and great defense from Reed Johnson and O-Dog and this was a good day for the Jays.

The schedule is rough, very rough in the next couple of weeks. Coming up the good guys are at Minnesota, then at home to Washington, Boston and Minnesota again. It isn't until May 30th that they see a team playing under .500. So, morale wise this was a great win, the only team the Jays have beaten recently was Kansas City. Craig, in the game chat, has this as the most important game of the year to date:

[CraigB] huge, huge game today
[CraigB] that was the most important game this year
[CraigB] first, other than the KC games, they were on a long losig streak
[CraigB] and Halladay represented their best chance of breaking it
[CraigB] and the Royals don't count, to be frank
[CraigB] second, if they had lost, they were very likely to come back home under .500
[CraigB] now, they're likely to come back home over .500
[CraigB] a huge difference

There were not many runs in the early going as you might expect with each team sending out their ace. The Jays tagged Sabathia for a run in the second and third, but, the Indians didn't get on board until the 6th when Doc got himself into a little jam and a wild pitch brought a run home. Neither pitcher was on tip-top form, I'd say both brought their A-/B+ stuff. I have certainly seen Sabathia pitch better this year, but I still felt he had a slight edge over Halladay for much of the game, Doc seemed to be having a little trouble putting hitters away and was not quite his usual hyper-efficient self.
Gilmore and RBillie put it well in the chat:

[Gilmore] maybe this term gets thrown around too often, but I think Roy has been effectively wild today, which is the reason for the high pitch count. He doesn't have his normal command, as evidenced by the 2 walks and all the 3 ball counts, but he is still getting it done with his stuff
[RBillie] Roy's not pitching like himself. i think he needs to mix his pitches up a bit more. too many fastballs.
[RBillie] look how good his curve is though. he needs to use it more. he doesn't have command with the fastball.

Behind Halladay there was some brilliant defense. I ran out of superlatives for O-Dog long ago, so I'll simply say it was another typical Hudson performance at second. He produced a handful of simply excellent plays, the highlight a backhand snag and strong off-balance throw that saved a run in the sixth and baled Doc out of his mini-jam. Sparky had quite a day with the glove himself, his strike to second to nail Crisp going for an ill-advised double was a thing of beauty.

The best news for the Jays though had to be from the bats of Vernon Wells and Alex Rios. Vernon was two for four and broke the game open in the eighth with a 3 run homer off Sabathia. Rios, hitting leadoff, went two for three with his second homer of the season coming in the third, a big pulled drive to left centre, he's at a very respectable .305/.343/.461 for the season now. It's only one good game for Wells, way way too early to say he's back, but when you've had as many bad days as he has this year every good one is encouraging.

Interesting to note, for those of us who have called for an extra hitter, that the bullpen was so stretched after the last couple of games that David Bush was warming up at one point. Should Doc have had to come out before the end-game it seems Bush would have pitched and Chacin would have moved ahead in the rotation to take Bush's next start.

Around the majors

* The Big Hurt is on his way back, like the White Sox need any extra help right now, he was in Ottawa for the start of a AAA stint with Charlotte.
* Rich Harden is on the 15 day DL with a strained stomach muscle, Keiichi Yabu will take his next start on Wednesday in Boston.
* Manny Ramirez became the 39th player to hit 400 home runs. Question of the day - he's 32, how many is he going to hit in his career ?
* Jeff Bagwell is going to have shoulder surgery in 'a last chance effort to salvage his playing career'

Mini Roundup

Very few baseball stories around the canadian press today, apparently there was some important hockey game or other on yesterday that seems to have the Sportswriters all worked up.

I was surprised that Doc came out for the eighth, he was at 109 pitches after 7. I know the bullpen was stretched but the score was 5-1 and Vinnie Chulk should have been able to go one, or put Miggy in for two.

Halladay's extra pitches were OK yesterday, but he might pay the price on Friday against Washington.

"He's a guy who has no business getting on base against me," Sabathia said. "That guy is an out, and I should have gotten him out."

Refering to Menechino here. There are a lot of good pitchers around, but either i've been sheltered from comments like this in the past, or this guy is just extrordinarily arrogant.

Or he just says what everyone else thinks and won't say to the press.

It's not like Menechino is Pujols up there. He's a journeyman utility player who's hitting .167 this year. Sabathia SHOULD get him out. I'd rather him say that than pull out the canned cliched responses that just about every athlete gives.

If Josh Towers said the same thing after walking, say, Josh Bard I suspect many people would say how competitive and refreshingly candid he was.

Congratulations to Alex Rios on passing Rafael Belliard on the career home runs list!

Menenchino has hit .268/.367/.465 including 9 homers in 200 ABs over the last 3 years against lefties. He's actually a reasonably effective platoon hitter, as opposed to Garth Iorg or Dave Berg.

It's not the arrogance that is problematic, it's the ignorance. If Sabathia does not understand that Menenchino is more likely to hurt him than Hinske, say, that is definitely not going to stand him in good stead in the future.

I know this is probably pure falacy, but I read a snippet in the Florida Sun Sentinel (I don't have a registration so all I got was the teaser), that indicated that the Yankees are close to releasing Giambi and that the A's, Jay's, and Ray's would be interested in picking him up. (Who wouldn't take this $300,000 gamble?) The connection to Beane and Riccardi is stated as the reason why he would consider those 2 teams.

If he is outrighted how does the league determine who gets first shot at him? Would it be reverse order of last year's standings?

If Giambi is released, he becomes like any other free agent. He's free to sign with any team that is interested in his services.

I think barring a disastrous injury in the next 3 years that Ramirez is a cinch to end up with at least 500 homeruns by the middle of 2008.

He'll be about 35 at that point so the question then is how many more years can he play? I doubt he'll still be an outfielder by then so it's just a matter of how long his bat speed sticks around. Looking at a guy like Julio Franco (who is admittedly smaller and more wiry than a big thick guy like Ramirez), I would say it's possible for him to play into his late 30's at a high level.

I would say he ends up with between 600 and 650 homeruns when his career is done. Although if he keeps his current performance up for longer than I expect then who knows. The guy is an exceptional talent with the bat.

As far as the extra bat, I would say that it's tough to find a bat in the minors that the Jays are comfortable using in a part time or utility role.

Although if you decided to call up Hill in June then he could be used as a type of Super-U guy, rotating around the infield to give Koskie, Adams, Hudson, and maybe even Hinske one day off a week and coming off the bench on days when a tough righthander is the starting pitcher.

My issue wasn't so much with having the 7th pitcher as much as the 7th pitcher wasn't being used much and when he was he was giving up a lot of runs. If they're less shy about using Downs and he can maintain an ERA in spitting distance of average in a long relief and spot start role then I'm fine with him on the team. Though it seems like big league righties might tong on him.

Anyone check out Ligtenberg's stats in Arizona? 5 IP, 13 H, 13 ER, 4 HR. It sures seems that whatever was ailing him last year (hips?) hasn't gone away.

I never understood the 12th reliever personally. All that teams are doing is creating an artificial shortage of pitching. Would you really rather have Scott Downs in for that 1 inning than Vinny Chulk having pitched the day before?

I dont understand why Bush was warming up either. There had been rain delays sure, but Justin Spier had pitched the Friday, and had 4 days off before that.

I would be absolutely thrilled to get Giambi, while he isn't hitting much his OBP is still a neat .383, and if he could put up even half of his roid seasons with us for $300K I say it'd be worth it.

Also according to Seattle Post-Intelligencer the M's may be interested in Borders, Myers, and Santiago. Hmm can someone find a connection with these 3?

How 'bout Terry Adams?

11.1 IP, 20 H, 14 ER, 8 W, 3 K

Imagine that a year ago these two were 'battlin' for the closer position on the Jays.
