I can't buy a win in the big-league game reports, it seems, but this is my second minor-league organizational sweep in a matter of weeks. I'm not sure what to say on this momentous occasion. What I really need here is a Repoz inspiration.

"I haven't been this excited ... since the CD release party for The Spaghetti Incident?!"

Okay, I have a ways to go yet....

Syracuse 7 Louisville 5

Big comeback win by the Skychiefs last night, and they needed it. Down 5-0 entering the 6th (more on that shortly), Syracuse posted a 3-spot in that frame and tacked on 4 more in the 7th for the margin of victory. John Hattig grounded a two-run single to center to tie the game, and John-Ford Griffin provided the winning RBIs with a two-run double. The win went to Matt (Can’t Get Enough of That Wonderful) Duff, who struck out 3 in 2 scoreless innings. The save went to Matt Whiteside, and if anyone has any information about what happened to Jason Arnold, I’d love to hear it.

When the Blue Jays demoted Dave Bush to Triple-A several days ago, I wrote:

“[S]ending a young player down to Syracuse hasn't exactly worked wonders lately. Adam Peterson went down last season and cratered. Brandon League went down this year and is getting worse by the day. Gabe Gross went down after a week and still hasn't recovered. I'll lay even money that Bush is going to struggle once he arrives.”

Bush’s first outing as a Skychief this year: 6 innings pitched, 5 earned runs on 10 hits and 2 walks. He did strike out 7, for what that’s worth, but by and large, the Louisville batters just singled him to death. I’d have much preferred to be wrong.

New Hampshire 5 Norwich 3

Another comeback win. Trailing 3-2 in the 7th, the Fisher Cats surged ahead on a 2-run homer by Ryan Roberts in the 7th and added an insurance marker on an Erik Kratz sacrifice fly in the 8th. The win went to the resurgent Cameron Reimers, who threw 7 strong innings (3 earned runs, 7 hits, 2 walks and 4 strikeouts). But the real eye-opener was Ryan Houston, because of two stats following his name. The first was “Sv(1)” – Houston has apparently moved into the closer’s role. And the other was this: 7 batters faced, 1 hit, 5 strikeouts. We discussed Houston’s rapid development in yesterday’s New Hampshire report; if the Fisher Cats make him a closer and it sticks, buckle up.

Clint Johnston doubled and singled in his Double-A debut, while Vito Chiaravalotti cranked his third home run of the season in his first plate appearance. In his next at-bat, though, he was called out on strikes, and was then mysteriously replaced at first base by Rob Cosby. My guess (and my hope) is that Big Vito argued the strikeout call and got himself tossed by the umpire; with any luck, it’s not an injury. I won’t be available Saturday to check on this, so if anyone learns more, please pass it along.

Dunedin 12 Clearwater 5

One of the few games played on a rain-soaked night in Florida saw Dunedin’s big bats booming again. Welcome to the Florida State League, Chip Cannon: 2 home runs and 4 RBIs for the newest D-Jay in a smashing debut. Third baseman Eric Arnold doubled, singled, walked and scored 3 times, while Jayce Tingler also singled and doubled. First baseman Joey Reiman drove in 2 runs on 3 singles and a walk. Every Dunedin starter recorded at least 1 hit.

Mike MacDonald would’ve liked to have benefited from all the offensive support, but he was gone after 4 innings, yielding 3 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks, striking out just 1 batter. The win went to Justin James, who stopped the bleeding by allowing just 1 earned run in 3 innings, walking 1 and striking out 2. Terrific closing work was provided by Tracey Thorpe, who struck out 4 batters in 2 shutout innings.

Box score

Lansing 8 Clinton 6

The Lugnuts completed the organizational sweep, breaking open a close 3-2 contest with 5 runs in the 7th inning, then holding on for a slugfest victory. Third baseman Jason Armstrong was the hitting star, driving in 4 runs with a double, 2 singles and a walk. Is Yuber Rodriquez hearing footsteps from the newly promoted Charles Anderson? Rodriquez scored 3 runs with a double, single and walk. Christian Snavely's double was the only other extra-base hit for Lansing.

Russell Savickas got the start and was terrific, firing 6 shutout innings on 3 hits and a walk, striking out 4. The relief corps wasn't quite so hot, as Jordy Templet and Joey McLaughlin combined to let Clinton back into the game. Daryl Harang entered with 2 outs in the 9th and walked a batter before recording a strikeout to end the game and the sweep.

Your Three-Star Selection: A lot of heroes tonight, and a lot of guys accepting new assignments:

3. Russell Savickas: 6 shutout innings for his best performance of the season by far.

2. Ryan Houston, New Hampshire: 5 strikeouts in 2 innings to earn his first save: do we have yet another closer in the organization?

1. Chip Cannon, Dunedin: 2 home runs and 4 RBIs in his first Florida State League game. Nice start.

Jordan, Jason Arnold pitched the night before, maybe even two innings.

Whiteside has always been the closer, Arnold the setup man. When Whiteside was up in Toronto Arnold became the closer but now that Whiteside is back Arnold will close when Whiteside cannot go, or Pevey decides to leave Arnold in.

Nice to see some more positive results from promotions. If Cannon can continue to explode offensively at Dunedin, it will allow us to continue making ridiculously obvious puns.

Interesting to see Houston move to the closer role. I know that many on the minor league BB Roster have held out hopes that he would put things together and harness his stuff as a closer. For one night at least, he obviously succeeded. Hopefully that continues. He makes an interesting contrast to the set-up and closer in Syracuse, neither of whom really inspire me. Whiteside is a 4A type, and even Arnold's successes this year speak more of a middle reliever than anything else.

I can understand harbouring reservations based on what he's done in years past, but his success this year are middle reliever material? 11 hits in 22 innings doesn't impress you? 17-5 K-BB ratio mediocre in your books?

I'm beginning to wonder whether the defence in Syracuse maybe is a bit to blame for some of the pitchers' troubles. DIPS wise that was a pretty good game for Bush but I didn't see or hear the game so I don't know what the hits were like (i.e. hard hit or otherwise).

I don't know how Matos and Alfaro are up the middle and Hattig is average at best at third. Dominique is not known for this glove behind the plate I don't think. Griffin is not great in left field, Gross is competent in right, Nelson and French are probably serviceable in centre.

But I'm looking at that infield, particularly for a guy like Bush who gave up mostly grounders yesterday and maybe the explanation is as simple as that. Either way I don't think he'll spend more than a couple of more starts down there if Towers can't regain his arm strength.

Does anyone know what happened to Jordan Timm, the LHP from last year's Pulaski team?

It depends what kind of stuff he's bringing with those numbers. Is his velocity and the sharpness of his slider and change improved? I'm only saying this because after about 10 innings JP said Arnold still had things to work on and prove. I don't know if anything has changed since then.

any reason why adam lind didn't plany?

It's also interesting that Kevin Barker was brought up to Syracuse to play first base.

I guess they thought that he'd be a better first baseman than the alternatives on the club already, and with the rest of the first base promotions from below, why not?

Adam Lind just had a night off.

Fair enough, R Billie. Tim didn't seem to be saying his assessment was based on having actually seen Arnold, is all. By the numbers, he's been outstanding.

Brian B, not having heard any different, I assume Timm is at extended spring training. He's 24, so he's got an uphill battle as a prospect. As for Barker, he's essentially a delayed replacement for Crozier, who was producing reasonably well for he Chiefs.

Marcum today, so far....4 IP, 3 H, 0 BB, 6 K. Not bad.

Game is tied at zero as the Chiefs face Jeriome (sp?) Robertson
Gerry - Saturday, June 04 2005 @ 03:36 PM EDT (#118634) #
Marcum through 6, five hits, no walks, seven K's. Chiefs lead 2-0.

Skychiefs win 3-0 behind 7 strong innings for Marcum. All he allowed was 5 hits, 0 walks, with 8K's.

Here's a bet for you. Who's the first pitcher recalled from Syracuse?
A)Bush
B)Rosario
C)Marcum
VGeras - Saturday, June 04 2005 @ 04:40 PM EDT (#118643) #
Bush will be 110%

The other two never have never had their contracts purchased and can't actually be recalled

:-)

VGeras,

The other two could have their contracts purchased, be called up, be demoted, and then be recalled all before Bush gets recalled.

Jonny, you're right that I'm probably being harsh. It's not that I don't think he's pitching well. He is, and the stats do support that. I think he has a 19.7% KBF right now, which is quite good. I honestly don't know enough to say whether those stats say major league closer or major league middle reliever. Based on the fact that he is still acting as a set-up guy this year and has struggled in the past, I am more inclined to see Arnold contributing as a middle reliever, say a 7th inning guy. If he ends up in the 8th or 9th positions, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Marcum ended up pitching a 7 inning, 5 hit, 8 strikeouts game today. Nicely done. Skychiefs win 3-0.

Big Vito isn't in the starting lineup today for the Cats. I'll see what I can find out about his status, and have it in the minor league update tomorrow.

New Hampshire win behind a solid start by Izzy Ramirez.

Casey Janssen has allowed one hit through five innings.
Nick - Saturday, June 04 2005 @ 08:37 PM EDT (#118656) #
Janssen through 6 - no runs, 1 hit, no walks, 6 K's.
Nick - Saturday, June 04 2005 @ 08:41 PM EDT (#118657) #
Oh, and he picked off the only baserunner he allowed (on a single) so he has faced the minimum 18 batters through 6.
Lugnut Fan - Saturday, June 04 2005 @ 08:48 PM EDT (#118659) #
Janssen is twirling another masterpiece. I wonder how what he thinks about Manchester as a home shortly.
Nick - Saturday, June 04 2005 @ 09:16 PM EDT (#118661) #
The 7th unfolded like this for Janssen: K, BB, popout to SS, BB. He was then lifted for a reliever who promptly allowed a single to score the first Clearwater run before inducing a flyout to RF for the final out. D-Jays still lead 6-1 through 7.
