The division leaders remain the same but the tension builds as the BBFL counts down the last five regular-season weeks.

Greetings from Birmingham, Alabama, where the townsfolk buzz with excitement as the BBFL enters the final five weeks of the regular season. Can the Senators rebound and overtake the Walrus? Will the Burlington Mazsters and Mighty Midgets translate their strong normalized records into "real-life" success? Who is this Doctor Z, and how hot are his men?

As I travel U.S. 78 in my rented Dodge Stratus, men look on in respect and envy, women swoon, children stand agape and awestruck. Tomorrow's paper may focus on the city budget or the Crimson Tide's prospects for the upcoming football season, but the real story is the BBFL. We are their heroes.

ALOMAR DIVISION:

The Walrus set an all-time BBFL record with 11 saves and widened his first-place lead over the suddenly lifeless Senators. The Thunderbirds and Hammers are primed to grab one of the two bye-week slots. On the other side, it remains a five-team battle to avoid the three relegation spots.

BARFIELD DIVISION:

Team Junior Felix maintained a slim lead over Jay’s Ehs. Both will advance to Alomar in 2006 if they retain the top two slots. The Anarchist Archivists need to pull themselves out of their tailspin to avoid dropping to Carter. Three teams are within 2.5 games of the last relegation spot currently held by The Sweaty Guys. The Barfield Division is amazingly compact. The mid-ranked teams could enter the top six or face relegation with just a couple of lopsided scores.

CARTER DIVISION:

The Papayas hold a healthy 5.5-game lead with three teams fighting for second. Carter is not nearly as tight as Barfield; the middle-of-the-pack teams must make a huge late-season run to reach the Championship Bracket playoffs that hold the key to advancement.

Thanks for the update, Scott (during a vacation no less!). My Thunderbirds desperately need Halladay and Helton back ASAP if I hope to reach a first-round bye.

Scott - Sorry if I missed an announcement earlier, but have you given us the info as to how we can pay our portion of the league fees? Thanks in advance.

My sweaty guys have finally started playing like the champions i knew they were. the last few weeks have given me a chance to not finish in the bottom 3.
weeks of 9-1, 5-7, 10-1, 6-5, 12-0.
It's been a long road, but they need to keep up the good work.

Personally I'm just hoping Junior Felix and the midgets kick the hell out of each other this week. Of course, regardless of what happens in that marquis Barfield matchup, I still need to do something against the Monkeymen who have gotten off to a tremendous Monday head-start on me. It will be an interesting finish in the battle for promotion.

Vacation? No one comes to Birmingham for vacation. I'm afraid this is for work.

And no, I've dropped the ball on the fees. I'll email everyone when I get home.

My Eastern Shore Birds (Alomar) got trounced last week but we're still in the middle of the standings.

Trade opportunity: I'm ready to trade top outfielders for top middle infielders.

NOTE FOR ALOMAR OWNERS

I'm trying to figure out who to keep next year. I've got the following candidates:

Colon
Radke
Willis
Lowe
Loaiza
Glaus
Torii Hunter
Johnny Damon
Reggie Sanders (put up surprisingly good stats this year)

I'm looking to pare the list down to 5, so I'm looking to make some 3-for-1 or 2-for-1 or even 4-for-1 trades for someone intent on winning it all. I've got a few other players that could be useful to you, like David DeJesus and Edgar Renteria.

Even though I'm in 5th right now, I don't think I have a realistic shot at winning anything, so I'm looking to acquire a superstar keeper for next year in exchange for a whole lot of depth.

A weird week for the Cannibals- my hitters went .245/.303/.394, but I was able to tie runs scored with 30 and win RsBI with 40. Lost steals 3-2; Gathright and Chris Burke are not running right now.

Pitching was a similar story- lost ERA and WHIP mainly due to CC Sabathia and his 10+ ERA over 9 innings. I did take K:BB at 3.16, and managed to rack up 5 wins, 67 IP.

Bonds- Jim Edmonds, the greast Cannibal- .286/.423/.762, 4 R 10 RBI (1/4 of my team RBI), and a HR in extra innings Sunday, which not only tied me for the lead in runs but allowed Izzy to get a save that put me in the lead for that category.

Huckaby- Aaron Hill is killing me. It's great that he's qualified at SS, but .188/.188/.188 with only 1 run scored sucks from a guy who has been my best hitter.

Pedro- Waiver wire pickup Jeff Francis: grabbed him because he was set up for 2 home starts, and he actually pitches better in Denver than on the road. 2 W, 12.1 IP, 1.42 ERA, .95 WHIP and a K:BB of 13, all in Col. Actually had some really good pitching this week, but it was obscured by bad outings from relievers.

The battle to stay in the league couldn't get tougher- facing the Walrus this week with several of my "better" hitters slumping (when your in almost last place, do you really have better hitters?).

Moffatt- don't keep Loaiza. I know it's tempting. I was down that path, and it's dark and scary. Seriously man. You don't need that kind of stress in your life.

Personally I'm just hoping Junior Felix and the midgets kick the hell out of each other this week.

Well they may be tired after kicking my ass the last two weeks.

The Posse was once a first place team. Then they met those horrible midgets and Junior Felix and went 3-21 over two weeks. The Posse is now in fifth 10.5 games out of first. Dee-pressing. The funny thing (well not ha-ha funny) is that I didn't really have bad weeks, just ran into two juggernauts having good weeks.

NOTE TO CARTER OWNERS

Simultaneously inspired by Pepper's missive, and depressed by successive trouncings that have dropped the Gremlins well back of the leaders, I offer to the top contenders the following as trade bait, in a three for one or four for two type deal that would bring back a definite top-five keeper:

Jason Kendall
Aaron Hill
Jose Reyes
Bobby Crosby
Grady Sizemore
Mike Cameron
Odalis Perez
Kyle Farnsworth
Jon Garland
Joe Blanton
*Scott Rolen (on the DL)

If any of these potential reinforcements appeal, let me know.

Promotion/Relegation question:

When an owner is promoted or relegated, they lose control of the players they owned in their old division.

In their new division, is there some sort of dispersal draft of the orphaned players from owners who were promoted/relegated? It would seem to be awfully unfair if new owners in a division had to start completely from scratch.

Also, are extra open slots in Alomar and Barfield filled by interested owners from lower divisions?

Thanks,

Jack

P.S. After an 11-1 pasting of one of my rivals in the Carter division, Three Bucks on a Hun have a small chance of sqeaking into the playoffs...

Barring a substantial comeback, the New Jersey Stratuses are likely out of the playoff hunt in the Carter Division. I am also willing to make deals.

Pierzynski
Feliz
Grudzielanek
Guillen
Randa
Everett
Dye
Anderson
Stewart
Jenkins
and all my pitchers except for Carpenter and Izzy are available.
sweat - Tuesday, August 02 2005 @ 11:34 AM EDT (#124462) #
Seeing as how everyone is doing it, I'm willing to offer up Nomar, Carlos or Ichiro if someone wants to trade me 3 or 4 guys that can help get me out of 3rd last. Nomar is the cheaper of the three. This would be for Barfield owners.
Gwyn - Tuesday, August 02 2005 @ 01:32 PM EDT (#124481) #
Most of my team are in my doghouse right now. The following are all theoretically available (especially if what I'm offered will improve the team for next year):
Brian Roberts, Jimmy Rollins, Raul Ibanez, Carlos Lee, Doug Davis, Chad Cordero, Odalis Perez, Doug Davis.
Ben - Tuesday, August 02 2005 @ 02:48 PM EDT (#124498) #
Wow, this was definitely a week to be remembered for the midgets. After losing a tough one the previous week we bounced back with a vengeance as seemingly everything swung out way. Behind by 2/3 of an inning Sunday and Brazoban the only pitcher left it seemed unlikely, especially since the Dodgers were down 5-2, but then a comeback happened and Brazoban pitched 2 innings to swing it our way. Then, later on, the Midgets were behind by three runs and four rbi's. Eric Byrnes and Jermaine Dye manage to tie it all up, but then with no out of the seventh inning Eric Byrnes goes deep right after Brian Roberts, causing me for perhaps the first time ever, to shout out in happiness over a fantasy team. Usually there is the quiet fist pump and the whispered "Yes!" but this was an all out "Whoop!"

This week team junior felix is definitely going to prove a challenge. We're going to need everything firing on all cylinders like it was last week in order for us to come away with another victory.
