Five wins for the affiliates, with the only loss coming on a balk. There was a cornucopia of excellent performances last night. New Hampshire scored four runs in the first inning which might be a bigger surprise than Auburn scoring 14 or Lansing scoring 16. Two minor leaguers, Justin Singleton and Ryan Klosterman, each went 4-4. Guillermo Quiroz hit two home runs. Francisco Rosario pitched 2.1 hitless innings for his first save of the year. The best pitchers on the three lowest teams, Chi-Hung Cheng, Robert Ray and Jesse Litsch all won as they had a combined 38 runs scored for them. Both Lansing and Pulaski defeated Burlington.

Pawtucket 4 Syracuse 8

Guillermo Quiroz hit a three run home run in the first inning to give the Chiefs a 3-0 lead. In the second Justin Singleton singled, Gabe Gross doubled him home and Bryant Nelson doubled Gross home to make it 5-0. Chris Baker started and dodged trouble all night, he left the bases loaded in the second and fourth and two on in the fifth before allowing a run in the sixth. Baker left with two on and two out in the seventh but Kevin Tolar came on to give up a couple of hits and three runs. Francisco Rosario came on and pitched 2.1 hitless shutout innings. Baker's line was 6.2 10 3 3 1 6. Quiroz went 2-4, 2 home runs, 4 RBI's. Singleton went 4-4 with a home run. Gross, Nelson, Barker and Solano also had two hits. John Hattig is off the DL but Anton French and John-Ford Griffin have gone on the DL.

Boxscore

Trenton 2 New Hampshire 5

The Fisher Cats scored four runs before an out was recorded in the first, double exclamation point. Miguel Negron doubled and Ryan Roberts walked to set the stage. Ron Davenport, elevated to the three hole, singled home the first run, then Rob Cosby, fresh off the DL, hit a three run home run. Vince Perkins cruised through the first four innings, recording six strikeouts while allowing only one walk. But in the fifth Perkins allowed two runs on four singles, three of them ground balls and one soft fly ball. Perkins came out and pitched the sixth, finishing with a line of 6 . Ryan Roberts homered for the fifth Fisher Cat run. Davenport went 2-4 with a double. Jesse Carlson recorded the save, his ERA is still at zero with 26.1 scoreless innings since coming down from Syracuse.

Boxscore

St. Lucie 3 Dunedin 2

St. Lucie scored single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth to take the W. Through 6.2 innings Kurt Isenberg had faced one batter over the minimum, but then a single, a wild pitch and a single gave St. Lucie their first run. Isenberg's line was 7 IP, 4 H, no BB, 3 K. Danny Hill allowed the tying run in the eighth, then Milton Tavarez balked home the winning run in the ninth. Dunedin scored their first run on a single by Manny Mayorson and a double by Robinzon Diaz. Eric Arnold hit his 16th home run in the seventh to give Dunedin a short-lived 2-1 lead. Jayce Tingler and Manny Mayorson were the only Jays with two hits.

Boxscore

Burlington 2 Lansing 16

Lansing scored five runs in the first inning, more than enough for Chi-Hung Cheng. Cheng had another typical performance, more walks than hits in six innings. Cheng gave up one run on 3 hits and 4 walks, with 6 K's. Worthy of note is that Dewon Day pitched a scoreless ninth as he works his way back from injury, initially with Auburn and now with Lansing. Lansing's five runs in the first came off four hits and two walks. Chris Snavely doubled home the first run; Ryan Klosterman doubled home two, and David Corrente singled home two more. Klosterman also doubled and scored in the third, doubled and scored in the fifth, and doubled and scored in the seventh. His line for the night was 4-4, 4 doubles, four runs scored, 2 RBI's and a walk. Jason Armstrong and Snavely each went 3-6.

Boxscore

Oneonta 3 Auburn 14

Auburn scored in each of the first four innings building a 7-0 lead and with Robert Ray on the mound seven was enough, but the hitters doubled down to score 14. Ray went six innings and gave up one run on five hits and one walk with six K's in six innings. Ray lowered his ERA to 1.64. Auburn scored their 14 runs with 11 hits and five walks. Jermy Acey, Ryan Patterson and Josh Bell each hit home runs. Cory Patton, Joey Metropoulos and Ryan Patteron each had two hits.

Boxscore

Pulaski 8 Burlington 3

Jesse Litsch had another quality start and his ERA jumped to 2.62. Let me explain. Litsch entered the game with a 1.89 ERA and shutout Burlington through 3 innings, while the Jays built a 7-0 lead in the middle of the fourth. Then I assume Litsch decided to groove a few pitches and gave up three runs before leaving the game after six innings, three runs on five hits, no walks, four K's, a quality start and his ERA increased. One of the big hits off Litsch was by Nick Weglarz from Ontario who was drafted in June. Weglarz, a high schooler, would have been drafted by the Jays if he was still on the board when their next turn came. Weglarz is hitting .227.

For Pulaski Jacob Butler hit a 2 run home run in the first; Jesus Gonzalez doubled and scored in the second; and Chris Looze doubled in two as part of a four run third. Heliezer Aguilar had three hits to raise his average to .310; Zach Kalter and Jacob Butler had 2 hits each.

How did Dewon Day end up with the Blue Jays? I know he pitched in Auburn last season, but when was he drafted/signed.

Also, I was listening to the Fan 590 in Toronto this morning, and they actually had "The Chip Cannon Report - The official minor league player report for Chip Cannon, Landry & Stelleck's favorite minor league player". I am not kidding.

Amos Dewon Day was drafted in the 26th round of the 2002 draft but did not sign until just prior to the 2003 draft.

I heard the Chip Cannon report too. They had Dan Shulman read his line from the previous night's game.

Was moving Rosario to the bullpen a short term thing, or do they plan on using him as a reliever from now on? In my opinion it's a little to soon to give up on him as a starter.

I think it's maybe time to bring in Rosario for some bullpen sessions with Arnsberg. League looked like his old self last week (though it was Arnsberg who caused League's problems in the first place) and they should switch him and Rosario and see if Arnsberg can fix whatever is causing Rosario's recent struggles.

It seems like every time I make the 2.5 hour drive up to New Hampshire, the Fisher Cats win. Last night was no different as they won 5-2. They are now 8-1 in games I've gone up for - the only loss being the 2-1 extra inning affair they dropped the day ownership changed hands and they began their 10 game losing streak.

Rob Cosby belted a 3 run HR to left and Ryan Roberts added a solo shot to left center and the Fishers cruised to a 5-2 win.

Vince Perkins dominated Thunder hitters striking out 7. Maybe it was his choice of wearing the white uniforms that did it? (Its the first time all season I've seen them wear white).

Here are a couple of my shots from the game:

In other News: The hotel above the left center field wall at the new Fisher Cats' Ballpark is now up to 3 stories tall:

Maybe it's just me, but the hotel just beyond left center seems really out of place, and in the short term a severe eye sore.
kpataky - Friday, August 05 2005 @ 11:14 AM EDT (#124762) #
I agree totally. And, they rotated the stadium such that the city's downtown could be seen from behind home plate, and now the hotel will block that view.

Last year they were batty over Chacin. Nice to see that they're paying some attention to baseball.

I love the hotel updates. I don't know why, but I find them funny and sad at the same time. And the image on the right of the batter (who is it?) is a classic. Nice one.

Of course a view of downtown Manchester isn't anything too exciting to see.

NFH, the batter on the right is Curtis Thigpen.

Thanks, Lugnut Fan. I don't think I'd ever seen him before -- not what I had in my head as the face to go with the name!

Of course, when I met Pistol I was surprised that he didn't have tattoos or a leather jacket...

the links don't send you to the player's page Kevin. also, is there any way we can see larger versions of the Zach Jackson pics? I'm intrigued...

LOL. You weren't the only one. I got Pistol from one of my favorite historical players, Pistol Pete Maravich.

Curtis Thigpen looks younger than me. Should I be worried about this?

The rejuvenated Sky Chiefs, now only 6 games back of Buffalo, send Justin Miller to the mound to start tonight. Josh Banks goes for the Fisher Cats in Reading, while BA Hot Sheet wannabe Davis Romero gets his chance at glory for Dunedin against St. Lucie. All eyes will be on the Rogers Centre tonight, but it's worth a peek at the minor league board after the game is done.

Cool. I just discovered that Dunedin has a webcam in the pressbox.

The picture is pretty tiny but you can hear the game announcer and people chatting in the background - I'm not sure if they realize the sound is on.

Finding Auburn home games on video?

David Paul, you deserve a raise.
