Michael MacDonald threw 8 scoreless innings as the affiliates went 2-1 with a rainout.

Syracuse at Pawtucket - Rained out

New Hampshire 8 at Reading 0

Michael MacDonald was the star of the game pitching 8 scoreless innings allowing just 3 hits and 1 walk.  He struck out 6 on the night.  MacDonald has a 2.57 ERA in 7 NH starts this year.

A balanced attack led the Fisher Cats at the plate.  Eric Arnold hit a solo home run and Miguel Negron had a 3 run HR in 9th inning.  Mayorson, Smith, Cannon, Jova and Arnold each had two hits.

Dunedin 10 at Vero Beach 1

Ryan Klosterman had a grand slam in the 3rd inning to break the game open.  He finished 2-4 on the night with a HR, BB and 6 RBIs.  Matthews, Diaz, and Neilsen each had 3 hits while Majewski had two hits and 2 walks.  What about Ryan Patterson?  After Monday's 6-6 performance with 3 HRs Patterson went 0-5 with 3 Ks.

Eric Fowler got the start for the Jays and went 7 shutout innings giving up just 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 5.

Kane County 8 at Lansing 3

Chi-Hung Cheng got the start for the Nuts (and seemingly starts every time I do an MLU).  He gave up 1 run through 4 innings and then hit the wall pitching to 5 batters in the 5th inning and retiring none.  He did strike out 5, walked none, and gave up no HRs so DIPS likes him.  However, of his 10 hits given up 5 were for extra bases.

Sean Shoffit had a triple and is hitting .319/.392/.440 for the year.  Brian Pettway added his 7th home run of the year.  His ISO Slg is nearly .300, but he's striking out a lot so his average is low, at .266 right now.

3 Stars!

3 - Eric Fowler

2 - Ryan Klosterman

1 - Michael MacDonald

MacDonald is having a nice season, his first in AA: 35 IP, 30 H, 2.57 ERA, 0 HR, 4 BB, 23 K.

(Apparently he's the only player named MacDonald in the minors--interesting.)

Is he still considered a prospect? He turns 25 in October.

Is it correct to presume that Purcey will be starting for Syracuse tonight? He last pitched in the second game of May 5th’s double header. In that game he struck out seven and walked one in 6 innings of work. It will be interesting to see how he follows that one up.

Also, is this Brandon League’s last option year?

Good friend of the Batter's Box Jason Arnold has a 2.25 ERA in 9 games (1 start).  In 16 IP, he's recorded 7 walks to an eye-popping 24 strikeouts (13.5K/9).

Question to minor league watchers: Any chance of him being called back up to AAA any time soon?

After reaching base 4 times in 5 trips yesterday, Chip Cannon's seasonal line reached .274/.364/.491 prior to this morning's game with Reading. The Cats emerged victorious 4-2 as Kurt Isenberg pitched well and Miguel Negron continued his May thaw by reaching base and scoring twice; Cannon doubled in 4 trips. It was a 9:30 a.m start in Reading to accomodate shift workers (cue Bruce Springsteen's Factory).

Lansing won their 10:30 am game this morning by a score of 10-4.  Sean Shoffit had a pretty good day going 3-5 with a home run, 2 runs scored and 4 RBI's.

From a box-score perspective, Shoffit seems to be hitting really well at the plate. However, his defense at 2nd seems lacking. Can anyone give a scouting report on him? (LugnutFan, looking your way)

Shoffit is the most intriguing player for me on that Lansing team.  They had an early game today too, and Shoffit went 3-5 with his 1st HR of the season.  He's not yet 21 and he's listed as being 6'2" so there may be some power there yet.  Add in the fact that he already has 4 3B's, which indicates some speed, and we might have a sleeper here.

Lugnut Fan - any insights on Shoffit would be appreciated.

Oh yeah - Lansing wion 11-4.

Shoffit is not a power hitter.  He is tall, skinny and very fast out of the box.  He is for sure a lead off hitter if he can improve his plate discipline, learn to work the count a little better and not strike out so much.  Watch his OBP.  That to me is what he should be judged on.  He had an 11 game hitting streak in April and is a decent bunter.  He is a spark plug on the bases and he really distracts the oppositions pitchers.

His defense is suspect and he needs a little quicker foot work around the bag.  His arm is okay.  He is also working with Jesus Gonzalez for the most part at short and this is really their first time working together as Gonzalez was in Pulaski last season and Shoffit was in Auburn.  I think that as the season goes on, you will see his error total dropping.

In answer to Pepper's question, there is not much in the way of an opening in Syracuse for Arnold right now.  The rotation is basically set as Gerry's review would suggest, and the relief crew is doing well overall. Brian Tallet has struggled some, but the Jays let Perkins go in order to make room on the 40 man for another lefty, so I doubt Arnold will take his place.  There might be changes resulting from Towers' struggles which conceivably could create an opening for Arnold in Syracuse.

For more excellent Michael MacDonald performances, I highly recommend catching his appearances on the landmark Yacht Rock series on Channel 101.

Brandon League gets the start in the nightcap for Syracuse tonight and pitches a scoreless first with a K.
