Seriously, who else could it be?

Today's photograph celebrates Vernon Wells, whose bat should have those wicked flames painted up it -- you know, the kind they put on cars to make them go faster. A friend of mine bought a PT Cruiser a few years back. He got a black one and had a custom paint job done with those flames. When I saw it I laughed so hard that I had to sit down. He was more than a little offended (I believe his exact words were "Dude, you're laughing at my car"), but I managed to convince him that my laughter was in appreciation of the sheer awesomeness of his new vehicle.

I hope he doesn't read Batter's Box.

updated with a silly flame decal version -- see the comments.

Maybe I'll add the flames in Photoshop. Click on the image to see a desktop-sized version.

I would like to take all the credit for Vernon's power surge.  On Sunday I wrote:

After going 0-for-4, Vernon Wells now has 8 games without a hit this month, after only one such game in April.
Month AB R H HR RBI BB SO OBP SLG BA
April 96 18 38 9 25 6 13 .437 .740 .396
May 93 10 22 2 12 9 11 .299 .366 .237
Anyone else slightly concerned? Hopefully just a down month... Wells is still by far having the best season of any AL centerfielder.

Vernon has since gone 5-for-11 with 4 homers.  Way to step it up.

Great shot NFH.  The photo really illustrates Vernon's work this past off-season.  I think he looks considerably leaner.  Got any similar shots from last year for comparison?

I'll have a look and see what I come up with.

What does he have on his right thumb?

It's a little guard that protects your thumb if you get jammed.  Zaun wears one, too.

There had been a whole series of events planned this week by a group of dedicated fans to rally to get Vernon voted in the ASG. It's a feat that is probably unprobable, but at least we can make a noticeable dent.

Unfortunately, the one person who we were relying on to endorse these rallies was Vernon himself who has actually taken the opposite approach and tried to stop it because baseball is, of course "a team sport". Can't say I agree about his stance, but the next time us fans want to, you know show some creative support for him, maybe we should think otherwise.

Anyways, he's still awesome. And of course, the ONE game that I decidede to sit out this season is the one where he hits three homers.
