Your Sunday brunch minor league update features A.J. Burnett's 2nd rehab start.

Syracuse 1 @ Columbus 4

The Chiefs' offence sputtered until a ninth inning rally saw them score and bring the tying run to the plate, but alas there were to be no heroes on this night. Jamie Vermilyea started and was the hard luck loser, giving up 1 run in 6 innings on 9 hits and 1 walk with 1 strikeout. Ben Weber was touched for 3 runs in an inning, before Ryan Houston came on to strike out 3 in 1.2 innings. John Hattig doubled and walked, and Danny Solano had 2 hits to lead the offence.

Portland 2 @ New Hampshire 6 (1st game)

Portland 3 @ New Hampshire 4 (2nd game)

In the opener, A.J. Burnett's 2nd rehab start was another successful one, as he went 6 innings and allowed 2 runs, 1 earned on 2 hits and 3 walks with 9 strikeouts. Brian Wolfe struck out the side in the 7th inning. The three offensive mainstays, Chip Cannon, Adam Lind and Curtis Thigpen, led the offence. Cannon homered and singled in 3 trips, while Lind doubled and singled in 4, and Thigpen doubled, singled and walked. Ron Davenport singled and drove in 2 runs with sacrifice flies.

The nightcap was indeed that for the Fisher Cat faithful.  The Cats trailed 3-2 going to the bottom of the seventh.  Chip Cannon led off and tied the game with his 2nd homer of the night and 11th of the season.  Eric Kratz followed with a single, and after a hit batter and a sacrifice, Manny Mayorson's walk-off single ended it. Danny Hill had a spot start, and went 4 shutout innings, allowing 1 hit and 3 walks, while punching out 3 Sea Dogs. Jim Bullard and Justin James struggled, before Tracy Thorpe came on in the top of the 7th to retire the side in order, including 2 strikeouts.  Thorpe was rewarded with the win. Adam Lind went 1-3, while Curtis Thigpen went 0-2 with a sacrifice.

FSL East All-Stars 4 @ West All-Stars 7

Ryan Patterson won the home run derby, and then drove in 3 runs with 2 groundouts and a sacrifice fly.  Ryan Klosterman walked twice in two trips, stole a base, and scored 2 runs.

Lansing 2 @ South Bend 4

Kristian Bell threw 4 shutout innings before running into trouble in the 5th. Back to back homers leading off the inning undoubtedly unnerved him, and the Silver Hawks followed with a walk, a single, a sacrifice, another single and a sacrifice fly for 4 runs in the frame, and that was the game. The Lugnuts scored a couple in the sixth inning to make a game of it on doubles by Cory Patton and David Hicks sandwiched around a South Bend error and a balk. Po-Hsuan Keng threw 3 shutout innings to close out the game, but the Lugs couldn't rally. Brian Pettway doubled and walked among his 4 plate visits.

3-star selection

3rd star- Po Hsuan Keng
2nd star- Chip Cannon
1st star- A. J. Burnett

Davenport has been making really solid contact lately, even his outs have been hit hard. He seems to have regained his confidence and might be swinging the hottest bat on the team. At Friday's F-Cats game the Seadogs made Chip Cannon look like a little leaguer with the following pitching philosophy: Knees, lower and lower. He can't handle anything low, either pounding it into the ground or missisng altogether. However, Saturday was a prime example: If you don't keep it low, he will drive it to the gaps.

Can someone confirm (or deny) that Russ Savickas is pitching today for the Skychiefs? Minorleaguebaseball.com has him listed as having pitched the first inning and giving up a run.

Yeah, I didn't get that either. He's still listed as the starter now, long after the game ended, and he's on the Syracuse roster, from what I can tell. That's just a little bit odd.

Okay, very odd.
