Gus Chacin had shoulder surgery earlier this week.  There apparently was a small rotator cuff tear that was repaired and according to the article Ricciardi said he should be ready for spring training.

Vernon Wells also has a shoulder issue, but not enough of one to stop playing, or even have an MRI on it.  But he will have an MRI after the season.  This seems a little silly to me, no?

For those who hadn't seen the Wells story (it was news to me), here it is.  And yes, it seems silly. if it really it a little "tightness" in the shoulder, that seems like the sort of thing that might get better with a week off, yet Wells has been in there everyday. If he does end up needing even a minor procedure to fix the shoulder, it's better to find out now, and leave more chance for a fully rehabilitated and healthy 2008. Especially with the large contract. September 2007 isn't worth anything of note, at the very least give him some time off.

As for Chacin being ready for the spring, now coming off elbow, forearm, and shoulder problems in the last few years...I hope they aren't counting on much. Healthy, Chacin is possibly the fifth starter on the team, but it's been a few years now since he's been healthy for any extended stretch, and it's hard to know just what he might offer.

Chacin would make an ideal #6 guy if Litsch sticks. He's got an option left, so he could be stashed in Syracuse until needed (I don't think he'd be much use in this bullpen).
