David Purcey, the Jays first round pick in the 2004 draft, has been called up from Triple A Syracuse.  Reliever Brian Wolfe has been placed on the 15-day DL with a right triceps strain.

Purcey was 2-0 with a 1.89 ERA in three starts with Syracuse this season.  The big lefty has a K/BB ratio of 21-6 in 19 innings pitched and has a WHIP of 0.95 after allowing just 12 hits.  Thanks to Bauxite Sherrystar for the heads up.

Welcome to the Show, David Purcey.  Knock 'em out!

So what do we think Purcey would have to show in this callup to stay up after Wolfe's DL stint expires?

or is there no real chance of him staying up?

Anyone know if Burnett is going to make is scheduled start tomorrow, or is someone else (Purcey) gonna take it?

Purcey is schedule to start Friday, unless he's needed tonight.  Burnett's start is pushed back to Sunday.

The news from Mr. MacLeod is that AJ pitches on Saturday after Purcey tomorrow, presumably to leave McGowan for Sunday.

The AP is saying that Burnett will pitch Sunday, McGowan Saturday.

Only one is correct.

So what do we think Purcey would have to show in this callup to stay up after Wolfe's DL stint expires?

It sounds like he'd basically have to pull a Clay Buchholz in order to stay up past Friday.  League can't be recalled yet, so does Thorpe get the call-up?

(I nearly typed Chris Nabholz instead of Clay Buchholz.  I need a vacation.)

I actually wouldn't mind if he pulled a Chris Nabholz, who was another big lefty although Purcey probably throws about four or five feet quicker.  Nabholz was real good when he came up and for a while I thought he was going to become an all-star caliber starter.  His breaking stuff was tremendous.

League can't be recalled yet

Not so.
At least not if the Cott's page is accurate.

Wolfe's trip to the DL provides a window for a recall. There does not appear to be a specification that the player is being called up specificlly to fill in for the disabled player as he is disabled - all I can find is the general statement as quoted below. If there is nothing more complex than that, then when Purcey goes back down on Saturday - as pretty much everyone agrees he will - then it's almost certainly League who will be promoted.

However, a player optioned to the minor leagues may not be recalled for at least 10 days, unless the club places a Major League player on the disabled list during the 10-day window.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Shawn Camp recalled after Purcey makes his start today.  Camp has been untouchable in Syracuse so far.  I think League needs a bit of time to work on his control.

I also think Shawn Camp would be the preferred callup over Brandon League.  League just hasn't had enough time in Syracuse yet (one appearance, 1.33 innings).

The only problem with adding Camp is the need to clear a spot on the 40-man roster to accommodate him.  (My choice would be outrighting Tracy Thorpe).

In other roster moves, the Chiefs today filled Purcey's roster spot with Mike MacDonald from the Fisher Cats and MacDonald's spot was taken by Jamie Vermilyea.

Do we have an old scout report on Purcey?

Gerry - Friday, April 18 2008 @ 07:37 PM EDT (#182941) #
Purcey scouting report from 2006 is here.   The Purcey report is beside the second picture.  It looks like Purcey's fastball is the same as back then, he can bury it inside but has trouble throwing it to the outside corner.  Purcey's curve does look better though.

That's great. Thanks, Gerry.
