The draft doesn't end after round 1!

The Jays don't select until #59 after their first pick at #17. After that they pick at #91, #129 and every thirty picks thereafter.

Here's a group of college hitters that the Jays could be on in rounds 2-5.

Ryan Flaherty, 3B, Vanderbilt:
Year AB AVE OBP SLG K/BB K%
2006 227 0.339 0.421 0.458 0.97 11%
2007 273 0.381 0.438 0.531 1.21 11%
2008 243 0.325 0.414 0.547 1.18 16%

Flaherty is currently the SS for Vandy, but is expected to move to 3B in the pros given a lack of range and size (6'3", 210lbs). He doesn't offer much in terms of power, but could post good averages from the left side.

Shane Peterson, 1B/OF, Long Beach St:
Year AB AVE OBP SLG K/BB K%
2006 125 0.328 0.411 0.432 1.73 13%
2007 199 0.327 0.418 0.472 1.00 11%
2008 203 0.399 0.510 0.601 1.07 17%

It's hard to look at a line that's essentially .400/.500/.600 and not be impressed. The knock on Peterson is that he has a bad swing, and not a lot of power.

Chris Dominguez, 3B, Louisville:
Year AB AVE OBP SLG K/BB K%
2006 10 0.100 0.100 0.200
70%
2007 267 0.266 0.327 0.528 5.38 29%
2008 241 0.369 0.430 0.689 2.05 16%

Dominguez is described as inconsistent. But you can see with the SLG that he has power and his Ks have come down considerably this year. He might be a nice upside pick. Dominguez is a draft eligible sophomore so he has a little bit of leverage.

Logan Forsythe, 3B, Arkansas:
Year AB AVE OBP SLG K/BB K%
2006 88 0.182 0.280 0.318 3.63 29%
2007 225 0.347 0.431 0.556 0.97 11%
2008 178 0.354 0.473 0.539 0.62 11%

Forsythe was a member of Team USA last summer and played well which is always a good sign (Team USA generally has the elite college players on the team).

Blake Tekotte, OF, Miami (FL):
Year AB AVE OBP SLG K/BB K%
2006 199 0.286 0.367 0.417 2.00 18%
2007 219 0.333 0.431 0.479 1.38 14%
2008 210 0.371 0.485 0.595 0.82 12%

Tekotte is the CF and leadoff man for the Hurricanes. As you can see he's improved in each of his years at Miami and was also a Cape League All Star last summer. He also has good speed as he's stolen 50 bases in college and 22 on the Cape last summer.

Jeremy Hamilton, 1B, Wright St:
Year AB AVE OBP SLG K/BB K%
2006 185 0.286 0.379 0.459 1.16 13%
2007 222 0.374 0.446 0.649 0.86 9%
2008 172 0.413 0.516 0.738 0.69 11%

Another Team USA player with huge numbers this year.  But as far as I can tell it's not against elite competition.

Jason Christian, SS, Michigan:
Year AB AVE OBP SLG K/BB K%
2006 49 0.163 0.283 0.204 1.86 21%
2007 244 0.328 0.406 0.520 1.27 13%
2008 179 0.330 0.438 0.570 1.03 16%

A left handed hitting shortstop with a pretty nice hitting line the last two years.  Big Ten baseball isn't the best competition, but he's worth a look after the first couple rounds.

The draft is on Thursday June 5th.  Here's the previous threads on 1st rounders:  College hitters, college pitchers and high schoolers.

Jonathan Mayo has a new 1st round mock draft up that's generally pretty in tune with what's going on.  He has the Jays getting Brett Wallace, and if he's gone speculates they'd go with Brett Lawrie.

Fair enough.

I do like the description of the balance of skills that Tekotte offers.  I wasn't able to locate his date of birth. Any clues?

Thanks, Mendocino.  Just turned 21 is good for a centerfielder. The speed aging curve is cruel.

Thanks for the update, Pistol.  I see that BA has my three hopefulls now ranked 15, 16 and 17 (Wallace, Lawrie and Martin).

That Dominican Tour that the Junior Nationals are on must be a wood bat tourny, right?  That was Law's sticking point on Lawrie, if memory serves - that he didn't perform well with wood bats last summer.

That was part of it, but he said in a chat today that he would have a hard time taking a hitter that high with a lack of defined position (not really liking him at 2B or C).

My gut instinct is that Lawrie ends up as a third baseman, but there is a scouting question about whether he has the quickness and fine skills to be an adequate defender.
